Default Edamame - I can't find the answer in here

The soy contraversy aside, are soy beans (edamame) OK to consume? I see them on the phase 1 PDF file in here but mine does not have it on the sheet. I LOVE them with sea salt and they have lots of protein. Any definite answer on if they can be eaten as a vegetable in phase 1??

I'm new to IP (on Day 5) but have read that edamame is fine. I was just going to post a similar question about black soy beans, are they considered a protein item or a vegetable?

I'm not sure I would trust a diet that told me not to eat edamame! There's really nothing healthier. I'm guessing it's fine.

For some reason, the new phase 1 protocol sheets have removed the soya from the vegetables list. This hasn't changed how the coaches are dealing with it - in many cases confused.

It was a vegetable on my sheet so, I would list it as a vegetable. I use 1/2 cup as 1 of my complete vegetable servings and and 1 more cup of other veggies. Some people may do differently.

It seems that each person has to see how the respond and if it works for them in the diet.

Soy sauce (gluten free is best) is ok.

Tofu is ok if you are a vegan or vegatarian but, you will likely lose slower... many people have.

Soy protein is in several of our packets so, soy is not off program.

SOYA.. gets lots of answers.

Green soybeans are very high in carbs and sugars. ALTHOUGH, they are very nutritious, high in protein and low in fat.. YUMMY

BLACK soy beans are matured and they have a fairly high carb value per 1/2 cup (8g total) but, they are 7g of insoluble fiber so, the impact of the carbs is equal to 1 carb per 1/2 cup.

I eat black soy beans and mix in some green. I treat it more like an occasional veggie because I am not vegetarian and, I don't need all the extra carbs and extra protein too.

Honestly, the difference between soy, soya and tofu has always confused me! If soy beans are considered a vegetable, should soy tofu also be considered a veggie? I thought tofu replaced a protein?

Soy and soya are the same thing. Kind of like aubergine and eggplant are the same, or swedes and rutabaga. Soy beans are raw, or appear in the same shape as the did raw.

Tofu is coagulated soy milk or curd (made by soaking, grinding, boiling and straining dried soybeans) which is then pressed into blocks. I think protein grams per gram are greater for tofu than for soy, therefore it is treated as a protein rather than as a vegetable.

Tofu is a processed legume, so that's like saying potato chips are a veg in my head. Well, not that bad, but still. I use tofu as a main protein source and I don't count it as a veg. I will use black soy beans at home in 1/2 cup servings but only a few times a week because of the carb content. If I am out, I'll eat edamame as part of my meal but only if I have the carbs worked out during my day. I think they took them off because some people were stalling with them. If anything, I'd treat them as a restricted and only 1 serving size (which is 1/2 cup, not a full cup).

That makes sense. I was eating them a lot cause they were satisfying and yummy BUT in my first week, I barely lost anything...I guess I'll cut them out and only have 1/2 cup if I do use them as a restricted veggie.
