Default Does pain medication effect how you lose weight?

I have 2 low dose scripts for the burn on my leg. Oxy and vicoden. I only take about 3 a day. Could it be effecting how i lose weight? Slowing my metabolism or anything?

Hmm....great question, Katielou.

In his book, Dr. Atkins made it clear that a variety of medications could affect weight loss on this diet (or any diet, for that matter).

From my experience working in the medical field....some of the worst culprits are psych meds.....mood stabilizers like seroquel, anti-depressants and anti-psychotics. Depakote and seroquel are notorious for shutting down the metabolism and can cause serious weight gain.

As far as pain meds go.....oxy and vicodin are short-acting opiates. If by oxy, you mean oxycontin, this is time-release oxycodone but still short-acting (meaning it has a very short half-life). The opiates that are much more likely to cause weight gain/slow weight loss are the long-acting opiates, like methadone and suboxone (the ones with the really long half-life).

The short-acting opiates like oxycodone and vicodin are NOT notorious for causing weight gain.....BUT, they have caused weight problems in a limited segment of the population. So is it a huge YES? Not really. But is it very possible? YES.
