Default Anyone Know about Ketosis?

I went into Ketosis ranging from small to moderate, mostly moderately since about the third day. Yesterday I regestered NEGATIVE... Could it have been the carbs I ate Saturday registering on Tuesday, or have I been eating too many rawhide bones (or something similar which I don't realize had the dreaded hidden carbs)??? Any ideas?

It doesn't usually take that long for excess carbs to register in the urine. If you've been drinking lots of water (as you should), this will dilute the urine to the point where your test strips will show negative.

Default another ketosis question

Can the ketosis stick show positive ifyou are burning fat from your daily meal instead of from your fat stores? Or is ketosis definitely burning stored body fat only?

Hi Ageoldie,

About ketosis: if you are drinking as much water as you are supposed to, you could possibly show negative, but I suspect you should at least show trace. Drinking as much as you should means you basically feel as though you are trying to drown yourself, glass by glass, and you spend more time in the bathroom than anywhere else.

Hidden carbs might be sneaking up on you, though. For instance, sometimes people eat those protein bars, and even ones by Atkins have glycerol which puts most people out of ketosis. Or something else might have more carbs than you believe. For instance, although heavy cream says it has zero carbs in a serving, in a cup of it you get over 6 grams of carbs. So, watch what you are eating, and avoid all processed foods if you are wealthy and have no children. That is, if you have all the time in the world to cook and prepare foods all day.

But also don't worry if you are out of ketosis for a day or two. You will probably get back into soon if you are not cheating. What is more important is to measure yourself every week and see how that is going. In fact, many people have the courage to NOT WEIGH THEMSELVES at all and just see how their clothes feel. When you weight yourself daily and let one pound gained get you depressed, it is best to stop the scale-obsession and just stay on plan until you can feel results.

And lisabateman, you CAN get a positive on the ketosticks from eating a high fat meal, if you eat more than your body needs for energy and the extra spills over into your urine. But again, not to worry. You don't have to live and die by the ketosticks. Just bounce along happily with your low carb way of life and see what the results are once a month or so.

And I don't care what any of the low carb gurus say, you do have to keep your calories within a moderate range or you will not lose weight. But this way of eating makes me and many others feel so good, that we would never eat differently. Losing weight is just a bonus.

Good luck.
