Default Change in my Body's Reaction to Alcohol

I had a very strange experience on Friday night. I went to a black tie event, and over the course of an entire evening, I had 2 1/2 glasses of wine -- we are talking from 6 pm to 11 pm with a dinner in between. I have never been a big drinker, but, in the past, I have had that much at a party or over dinner when out with friends without feeling the alcohol at all, but this time I got really tipsy and the next morning I had the hangover to beat all hangovers. I felt like I was back in college! I am still feeling a little sick two days later.

I have lost 27 pounds, and obviously I did not have as much in my stomach as I might have in the past, but has anyone else had an experience like this during or after weight loss? It made me wonder if I might have developed an allergy...or maybe reaction to sulfites in the red wine? Or whether the change in my body weight or chemistry could account for that level of reaction. It was really wierd...

I just had a similar experience, not with alcohol but peaches. I became sensitive to peaches after both of my pregnancies(itchy lips, face and throat). Doctors said it is not unusual due to hormonal changes. Last couple of weeks it's been happening again. I just turned 41 and I'm wondering if it might indicate I'm getting ready to begin entering menopause.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

It's happened to too. I went out Wednesday and Thursday and both times had two tall beers each night over the course of maybe 3 hours and was just a mite bit more than tipsy. Back when I was at my highest weight I used to be able to drink huge men under the table.

At least I'm a cheap date I guess...

The only thing I can figure out is that fat has some sort of strange alcohol absorbing power.

Yep, me too. It used to take quite a few beers (or several shots) before I got *buzzed* but now I have to pay very close attention - even 2 drinks over a 4 hour period (with water between drinks) and I really feel it. Actually, these days, one drink is enough that I won't drive. Doesn't really matter if I've eaten before going out or not. Not sure if it's weight related or if my system has just gotten so used to good clean stuff going in it that when I put alcohol in it, it rebels.

"A person's weight and sex determine the total volume of body water and consequently the BAC obtained upon consumption of a particular quantity of alcohol. Generally, the more a person weighs, the larger the volume of body water and the lower the BAC obtained from the consumption of a given amount of alcohol.

A female may have more fat tissue than a male of the same weight and therefore a smaller volume of body water. As a result, a female may obtain a slightly higher BAC upon consumption of the same quantity of alcohol as a male, all other factors being equal."

Yes. As you lose weight you'll get drunk faster!
