which one do you have? Do you like it? I'm looking for laptop recommendations. Toshiba is usually one of the cheaper ones but I know nothing about it. Anyone have one of those?
hp pavillion dv2000, got it in october at best buy, it's been pretty good to me except for occasional stupid problems with vista compatibility. just shop around for good prices and decent amounts of memory, etc. i'd say.
I'm a Mac Addict I used to have a PC, but RAM runs out too quickly on it... Also I like the Mac Software for video/website/music/picture editing :P
If you feel like shelling out the *cough* hundreds to a thousand extra of $$$$... (sigh..I hate how spendy you are, Macintosh!) then I say get a Macbook
If not, I've heard nothing but good things about the Dell notebooks from my PC friends!!
I had a Toshiba at work for several years, just before my current laptop, and it was reliable. Currently, we have IBM's, and I've had no problems with it, either. Both furnished by work, and I'm guessing they skimped on the RAM 'cause the machines got slower with every update of Windoze. There's no way to check because everything is locked down tighter than a convent.
Were I spending my own money, though, I'd buy a MacBook. We're now running two Macs at home, plus one PC desktop. I'll never buy another PC, particularly with all the complaints about Vista.
That said, if you have ruled out a MacBook for whatever reason, I have heard Dells are good.
I've had two Toshiba laptops without any problems. I think though that you can get a Dell cheaper now though. Make sure you shop around I just bought them off the shelf at Circuit City, but if you order them online you can customize them more and they may be cheaper.

i use to be pc only...however my DH just got a mac probook laptop....i know now what people mean about once you get a mac your life will change LOL. I love this Mac laptop..its awesome!
I wouldn't recommend a Toshiba. I bought one as did my parents, this past summer, and we've both had issues with them randomly shutting off. And then they don't turn back on unless you unplug the power and take out the battery, put it back in and then turn it back on. The one I bought actually wouldn't turn back on, and since it was only a couple days after I bought it, I was able to exchange it, but I still have the same random shutoff problem with this one.
ugh, I just got a Sony Viao, and it's ok. I've had some troubles with it locking up and then I have no choice but to shut it down with things open. I"m not a fan of vista. If I had the money, I would of gone mac, I even wish I would of this time around. Maybe in a few years when this one has finished it's life. I've heard only great things about macs.
I have a Toshiba Satellite for basic web surfing and such at home. Overall, it's been a good little laptop, but then again, I use XP on it. I run into occassional problems with the display, but it's nothing that a reboot can't fix (gotta love Windows). I use a Dell Latitude 610 for work, and it's been wonderful, but I can't say the same for Latitude I had at my last job. The DVD drive died and the hard drive was going on it before it was two years old.
Most non-Apple laptops now only come with Vista, and "downgrading" to XP (IMHO -that's an upgrade) isn't always an option due to the lack of drivers to support the hardware. Some of the higher-end laptops offer an XP installation disk with the laptop (Sony does this on some of their higher end machines). But if you're not comfy with wiping your hard drive and installing an operating system, then I DON'T recommend doing that yourself. And again, you might have driver issues.
Vista is a notorious memory hog, so if you're looking into a laptop running Windows, spring for the extra RAM. I wouldn't even consider anything under 2 GB because Vista is so S-L-O-W on anything less.
If you're not afraid of new things, there are some interesting little Linux based laptops for sale now. But again, if you're not adventurous and/or have no understanding of how Linux works, I'd recommend avoiding them.

I have the 17" HP DV9727 Entertainment Laptop. I love it. I just got it in January and I think I got a great deal on it. I use it daily with wireless internet in my house it works SUPER.

I have a Gateway laptop and love it, I have had two different desktops previously but the laptop is better for me,, my son has a Toshiba laptop and has no trouble with it.
I was hardcore anti-mac until I had to use one for work. once I got used to it i knew I'd never buy a pc again! Bought a macbook last december and love it! Sure it was probably a bit more expensive than PCs, but you have to realize just how much software you're getting out of the box versus a PC, plus there are hardly any viruses for macs - something that used to be a MAJOR problem for me when I had a pc.
For people who own laptops....
