Default zero point veggie soup?

Hi all, just a quick question: I like to take advantage of zero point soup, i.e, made with stock and a variety of zero point vegetables. I like to eat it between meals, or with them to help fill me up. I realise too much of anything can add up points-wise, but do you think I'm ok to eat the soup frequently, and not add it to my points total? I mean, there's only so much of it you can eat without wanting to gag anyway, right? What do you think?

It really depends. I have to be careful with zero point soups for two reasons. One, I absolutely love soup, and I can eat an awfully lot of it. Two, the sodium level, even when I try to keep it under control, is high enough to cause water weight gain, which is so frustrating.

Only experimentation will really answer your question. If it doesn't affect your weight loss, then don't worry about counting or limiting it. If it causes a stall or stubborn water weight gain that doesn't seem to resolve even if you drink extra water, then cut back or count it, or whatever you need to do to get the results you want.

We actually talked about this at my last WW meeting half the can is 0 points but if you eat the entire can it is actually 2 points, go figure.

If you are talking about the ZERO POINT SOUP RECIPE that W/W provides you (or you modify with whatever zero point veggies you like and omit those you don't) it is ALWAYS ZERO POINTS!!!!!!!

My post was based on soup I make at home using the WW recipe or using all zero point ingredients. I believe carrots and tomato juice are ingredients that are zero points only for a limited amount, over which must be counted.

Sodium doesn't affect the amount of fat or muscle tissue you carry, but does affect your weight through water gain. For some people this can be washed away easily with a little extra water, some people's bodies are a little more stubborn. You pretty much have to try it and see how it works for you.

Technically cooked carrots for 1 cup have a value of 1 but I refuse to count them. We did not get fat from eating carrots and the reason that W/W gave for why they count is totally opposite about what they put out for counting veggies...and tomato juice is always 0 points (per my leader). But we all have to do what we feel comfortable doing.

I have been on points since 1998 and have never counted points for zero point soup made from the recipe even when I have eaten 4 cups at one time...although people don't like to be around me much after that cuz of the gas LOL

I agree about carrots and tomato juice in principle. I've never bothered to count them. I've also never counted the zero point soup, as for me, I don't think calories were the primary difficulty I was having with it. I eat very little salt, and actually tend to have below normal sodium blood levels (dangerously so one time and even had to take supplements). So I am overly sensitive to salt, though when i was going to WW meetings, there were others who reacted to the soup very much as I did - gaining water weight that was hard to get rid of for several days.

It is only temporary weight gain, and if you can deal with that mentally and physically, it's not really a big deal. For me, though, I could gain 10 lbs of water weight (even more around TOM) and it would take 3 days to lose it (drinking lots of water, and reducing sodium intake even more).

I still love low point soups, but I try to limit the salt that goes in, and how much I eat. I weigh in on Monday afternoon, so if I'm going to make soup of any kind, or eat oriental food for that matter, I only do so between Monday night and Thursday afternoon.

I'm not saying everyone else will have to do this, as water retention is a very individual thing, but it is worth mentioning that it could happen and a little trial and error is in order. I'd suggest assuming that it isn't going to be a problem, and eat as much of it as you want to without counting it. If you notice problems then you're going to have to make some adjustments either in limiting it (whether you count it or not) or choosing when you eat it.

By the way, if you're going to use low-sodium broth or tomato juice in your soup, check the ingredients. If the ingredients include potassium chloride (a salt substitute), you may not like it. I detest the stuff. Potassium chloride has a metallic taste to many people (though some people can't taste it). If you want to try it, buy a single serving can of the tomato juice or taste before you add it to soup. I once ruined a huge batch of soup by using low-sodium tomato juice.

Thanks for all those tips! I think I needed to confirm for myself that it is indeed zero points, and not get so neurotic!

I'm glad I found this thread. I made a huge batch of this stuff yesterday because I love soup, especially if I can eat it for 0 points! The Progresso soup is good but expensive. Anyway, I'm glad I can eat all four tons of soup I made and not worry about it.

Oh me too -I'm starting WW on Tuesday, I'm relying on the soups to fill me up and stop me jacking it all in for the early weeks, just until my body gets used to eating less cals.

Butterfly - welcome to 3fcs, WW in particular! Since you're so new here, I copied the recipe from Kelly in the recipe section for you. When you have time, please go check out the recipes - some of them are delish! Btw, I don't like zucchini cooked this way, so I personally add a can of diced tomatoes instead, and count it the same. I didn't get fat from tomatoes, lol.

I'm gonna expound on Janes suggestions.

I use beef broth because it makes it taste better to me and heartier to me. I also omit the zucchini and add a bit of the other veggies I like. I also omit hte Tomato Paste and add a can of Rotel
