Unhappy Tired and low blood sugar w/metformin

I was diagnosed w/ pcos and put on metformin and I'm tired all the time and feel really weak. I'm trying to eat good. I couldn't stick to phase 1 of South Beach so I'm trying to just be better. Should I try SB again or do something else. I feel terrible.

Hi Carrie

What dose of metformin are you on? Are you on the extended release or the regular?

Are you in the middle of a dose increase or have you stabilized at your dose?

Are you eating on a regular basis? Have you been drinking plenty of water?

Sorry for a boatload of questions but these will help give an idea of how to help you.

SB is a very good diet for PCOS-ers. But, you don't necessarily have to chose that diet.

I'm interested in the questions posed by irisheyes213.

I've been on this dose for almost 2 weeks

Not doing so good on either thing so that might be a factor

I think you should concentrate on eating 3 meals and two (maybe three) snacks per day. Eat good foods - think lots of veggies, some fruites, whole grains and less bad foods.

Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day.

Take a multivitamin (if you aren't already).

And finally, start an exercise routine. I know, I know, but you're already tired. Try something that is not going to be too hard to start with. I recommend Leslie Sansome's Walk Away The Pounds videos. They are a good starting point. You'll sweat and you'll get a work out, and you'll probably feel better afterwards. Maybe not the first day, but soon.

Good luck!

Okay...

Definately schedule your eating. I know it can be frustrating and you don't want to eat when you are not hungry, however, the met helps reduce appetite for some people. Even if it is just something small...eat at regular times. Also, make sure that you are taking your met with food or right after dinner or another meal. I found that waiting too long after eating causes a low blood sugar level in the morning. I don't know why, I just know what I have experienced personally. If you are experiencing side effects other than reduced hunger and that is causing you not to eat for fear of the stomach issues...try immodium or pepto tablets. I have heard that the pepto tablets slow things down. Also, soluble fiber helps to slow things down and bulk things up if your are experiencing the bowel issues so many do with the met.

Water, water, and more water. Definately get in the "standard" 64oz.

If not already, take your met with the last meal before you are sleeping for the day.

And as Jennylou said, exercise. It does lead to an increase in energy after a while but you do need to get thru the intial adjustment period.

Keep hanging in there. In a few more weeks you should feel better.
