Hello all. TGIF.
I got through most of the budget work yesterday, but then I was running late for my train when I left the office, and then a block away I realized I’d forgotten my cell phone and had to go back. Aaargh.
But things are looking up!
My knee is fine today. (It was fine when I boarded the flight home on Wed. morning, but was sore when I deplaned. It was still a bit sore yesterday, but all that time I was glued to my desk yesterday was a good rest for it.
I’m relieved about my cell phone. The past few weeks it was acting weird – shutting down right after I’d powered it up, and then it got worse last week - just shutting down randomly. I’d downloaded an e-book and a couple podcasts before I left town last week and suddenly it was warning me about running out of storage. Turns out it was trying to install a system update of some sort. I must have been too quick on the draw in trying to restart my phone for it to ever go through, but last night It finally did, and now it seems fine. But we’ll see….
And I managed to lose a couple pounds when I was out of town, so that’s good.

It’s interesting how the kitchen cupboards can be as full as they are at my mom’s place, and yet there’s nothing all that great to eat… Speaking of packed pantries…why?? My mom told me she had to toss out a couple jars of Nutella because the date was so old on them. And for a woman who no longer cooks, she sure has a lot of spices. And she could probably eat out of her pantry, fridge, and freezer for a solid month without running low!
There’s nothing too exciting to recap about my visit with mom, except maybe the day my flight arrived at the Springfield, MO airport last Thursday, so I’ll limit it to that.
Story #1: I waited around for mom to pick me up, and decided to wait an hour before calling the house, worrying all the while because she’s usually very prompt. (She has a cell phone on our plan (me and bf’s), but she doesn’t carry it with her

and her car isn’t set up for hands free use anyway, and she sure doesn’t need any distractions while she’s driving!) Right at the hour mark, just as I was dialing her house, I get paged to go to the airport administrative office. Guy from a car dealership is phoning – the dealership is in a town
25 MILES north of the airport. He was calling for my mom, who missed the turn for the airport and just kept driving. Yes, she realized quickly that she’d missed the turnoff but by then she was on this rural road with a speed limit of 65 MPH but has very few exit and entrance ramps – just some intersections - most with no traffic signals - which she didn’t want to use because she didn’t want to have a hard time getting back on going back in the opposite direction, or getting lost. So she finally gets to a real exit ramp and stops at this car dealership. The manager offers to give her directions how to get back to the airport, but she’s too upset to drive back. Not upset like crying and shaking, but just determined not to drive on that road again (BTW – my mom won’t drive on highways; this road isn’t a real highway, but was enough like one that she wasn’t about to drive it again if she didn’t have to). So I take a taxi and $65 later, I’m at this dealership.
Story #2: After saying her goodbyes to a woman she was chatting with in the service waiting area, we get in the car to drive to her house. I put the key in the ignition, but it won’t turn. I wiggle the steering wheel – it moves freely, so it’s not locked up. And since that’s the full extent of my expertise with ignition problems, we go get help (good thing we’re at a dealership/service shop!). A few guys from the dealership/service area give it a go. They all ask if she ever had this problem (nope) and ask if she has another key, though they say her key doesn’t look worn or damaged. Nope, she doesn’t have one with her – it’s in her other bag, LOL. That exhausts their troubleshooting efforts. We’re told the option for the service area is to drill out the lock and replace it. But they couldn’t do it that day. So we’d either be facing an overnight stay in this town, or getting a loaner to drive home and back the next day. The 2nd option is to have a nearby locksmith the dealer works with come out and see what he can do. So this locksmith comes over and thankfully does his magic and shortly thereafter we are good to go. Well worth the $95 service call. Not sure why that happened, but he did say to wipe down your key if you keep it in your bag with tissue and other lint-y items. And he recommended lubricating the ignition switch with a dry type lubricating spray. Nothing sticky or oil-based that can gunk up your ignition and cause problems.
So, we weren’t off to the best start on this trip, but everyone was very nice and helpful, and thankfully the rest of my week there was uneventful.

Happy – We got a load of rain overnight Tuesday into Wednesday in MO. It was delightfully cool the next morning, if still a bit overcast and rainy. I hear it was rainy in Chicago while I was gone, but it was just gorgeous the past couple days, and today’s also beautiful. So sorry about hubby’s neck pain. I hope the cortisone is doing the job!! I have astigmatism in both eyes and my lenses correct for that, so there’s got to be hope for you.

Well it’s good to know my parents aren’t the only ones with jars full of bits & pieces – I’m sure many of the Great Depression-era babies are that way.

Maybe my fascination with the tiny home movement is a response to growing up in a home with the depression baby mindset. I hope you’re soon able to get out to
your garage to get through the boxes. I’m not thrilled to only have a 1 car garage, but it sure limits how much clutter can accumulate. My tips for you are snarky ones

– don’t accumulate so much, and choose good weather days to go out in the garage! It was hot outside and hotter in the garage, and get this - if my mom had her way (she didn’t though!), she would have left the overhead door closed because she probably was worried about nosy neighbors, LOL. Have plenty of boxes ready. Have charity organizations identified as recipients of unwanted items, and confirm what they will and will not accept. If there are specialty items, identify friends/family who might have the same interests and might want some items (e.g., my mom is giving some of my dad’s fishing gear to friends who fish). So next week is your rescheduled cruise (Lake Superior?)? Cool and dry and sounds like great weather to me – bring extra layers! Your girls night out sounded fun.
Michelle – I finally saw the photo you posted of the table like the one your dad made. Really awesome to have an heirloom like that – of course hang onto it! As for the rest of the stuff…like Happy, I wonder if the crafts were suited to your old life – more sedentary, and the long WI winters. You’ll figure it out. I’m glad the cpap machine is sorted out and hopefully on its way to you! So…have you gotten your new fingernail yet??

Re going back out to help my mom some more – yes, probably, as a move gets closer. There’s still a lot of uncertainty – including a place to move into!! Looks like you have a busy weekend – enjoy!
Susie – I hope the measures being taken will get your dh out of afib.
Terra – Yeh, what will you do with the 3rd day of school? Do you think not walking outside during the hot weather had an impact on your weight? But Michelle’s got it right about food being the bigger issue. Better choices, smaller portions. I know when I track my food, I know how it all adds up (all too quickly!) and that awareness makes a difference! I’m on myfitness pal if you want a buddy out there. I think my username is mfplaura.
Ceejay – I‘m sure you’re pooped after that long workweek. Get your rest! Best wishes for your aunt – how’s she doing?
Shad – Checkout chick, lol. I sometimes say my next job will be as a Wa!mart greeter, lol.
Annie – Did you take a half-day off yesterday? It sure was a nice one up here. Awww, bubbles and s’mores sound like fun favors for the wedding. Good to hear C is scheduled for the sleep study – find out what can help him get better rest at night (and you too!). You need to get your son in to get checked for diabetes – if he’s got an issue, he needs to get it treated before the damage is done. Having worked with our admin who has advanced renal disease, has made me so very aware of the way diabetes effects the body.

That’s it for me, gotta get this posted because I’m leaving early today. My friend’s annual industry event is today – a Lake Michigan cruise – and I’m going as her guest again. What a great day for it! I’m close enough to hop on the bus to get to Navy Pier where it sails from. She’s driving in from the far NW suburbs and afterwards we'll drive back to my house and she’ll spend the night there.
Tomorrow night we're seeing the band Chicago play in concert at Ravinia.
That’s all I have planned for the weekend, yay!
Have a great weekend everyone!!
