My most recent NSV would have to be kicking the sugar (real and artificial) habit. I started my weight-loss journey as I have done in the past--cutting back my portions, replacing high sugar/high fat snacks with low sugar/artificial/low fat snacks, eating Lean Cuisines for dinner and lunch, drinking more water, using meal replacement shakes and bars, everything in moderation, blah, blah, blah. But after reading a slew of books, articles (in magazines and on the web), prompted by my husband's recent health issues, I've discovered, 'everything in moderation' doesn't really work for me. 'Everything in moderation' means relying on my will power to stop from going overboard during stressful times or just plain boredom when I've reached my weight-loss goals. My diet has evolved over time with eliminating most store-bought processed foods, eliminating white sugar, white flour, I make my own veggie soups, my own yogurt, and my homemade 'lean cuisines' and just recently made whole wheat rolls and bread.
My husband had a very bad infection that required hospitalization for a couple of days (he's home and much better now). During the 12 hour wait in the ER (till a bed opened up), the drive back and forth visiting over the next couple of days--the vending machines, fast food restaurants would have been so easy. But during this time, all I craved was nourishing foods. I can't reverse what is going on with my husband body (but I'm working on his eating habits--he did kick his addition to diet sodas--whoo hoo!), but I can keep myself and my son as healthy as possible to stay strong for whatever is in God's plan for us.
