My parents are the same way we are all obese, mom has diabetes, Dad had a kidney transplant because he did not take care of himself (he is fine now). They eat out for almost every meal-so that was tough but I did it. It was the first time I went to American restaurants. I was very surprised how supportive they were and they noticed right away that I had lost weight. They were accommodating as to where we went for lunch or dinner. When I met with friends or other family members I would have the garlic soy chips in the car or before I met them and had a salad and brought my own WFarms dressing packets and salt with me. It worked great every time. Before visiting I did not tell anyone except my parents and brother I was on IP. So if others asked I told them and everyone was curious and supportive. It was nice.
What I learned while I was home is mainly how bad my family eats and my habits basically come from my parents. So I can see how early on I gained lots of weight.
The day I got off the plane we went food shopping for my veggies and proteins- to have in the house. It was all good.
You will have fun and relax. Half the battle is done - u mailed ur packets! Very proud of u - it takes alot to do that. I didnt think it was until my coach said it showed I wanted to stick to the program and pre plan. Never thought of it that way.
Thanks for sharing that. I don't often find other people who have parents with eating habits/health issues like mine. Your parents sound exactly like my parents, except my dad does not have kidney issues yet. I say yet because both of my parents continue to eat fast food and take out and also keep junk food at home. I can see where I learned my bad food habits and binging. I've had to teach myself how to cook and buy/store fresh veggies etc. We only ate frozen veggies growing up, no salads, and lots of hamburger based dishes (spaghetti with meat sauce, chili, hamburger helper) and also restaurant food, chips/Cheetos as snacks, and alway had ice cream in the house. Of course I'm thankful to them for putting food on the table, but I've had to work really hard to learn and adapt healthy habits since I left the home at 18 for college.
I really wish I could afford to put both of them on IP because I think they'd be successful with it, but I can barely afford it for myself so I won't be putting them on it. My mom actually made a comment that she's excited to see if she can learn some healthy habits from me, so I'm going to show her how I make my meals. We'll definitely do a trip to the grocery store on the way home from the airport.
Being around them and seeing all of the medications they're on, how they struggle to walk short distances, and how they eat saddens me, but also motivates me to take my health seriously and make it a priority. Thanks for the support and I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
