Thanks for the personal welcome. It's taken me a long time as well-- I've been down the diet road more times than I can count and have always fallen back into old habits.
Three things I would tell someone starting a lifestyle gnange:
1. The excess weight you're carry around didn't accumulate over night and it won't leave that way either. Find an eating plan you can live with for the long term and follow it. If you fall off the plan now and then just climb back on.
2. Keep a food journal. It's sometimes shocking to see what you are actually eating on paper (computer screen).
3. Get in some kind of exercise everyday.
