  • Ange82- perhaps if you are hitting a "wall" so to speak at 1 hour 45, then you need to slow your pace? Thats really the secret behind running long. My point to Ncueno was more that once your are "aerobically" fit enough to run for 60 minutes, than its not a hard leap up to 90 minutes, and then 2 hours, etc. Ive gotten my body to the point where it doesnt matter how far i am running if i keep my pace at a 9 minute mile or slower. It is effortless, and my body is very efficient at it. I could run forever

Runningfromfat-- try a different brand/style. It can be MADDENING to have something like that annoy you while you run! Just because its expensive or a running brand doesn mean SQUAT. I personally have only 2 shirts that i will run in, and ONE pair of shorts (STINKY!) Thats not to say i dont OWN 20 other things, but thaty all piss me off in one way or another.
I also like long shirts so i can wipe the sweat off my face, but Blueridge, i dont use it to blow my nose--- i just "farmers" blow when i run. ATTRACTIVE. I like to do that when i am at intersections

Funny! So true! I'm ok for shorts (several pairs of the same type solved that one) Tops are more tricky and my favourites are definitely not the most expensive. I really should have an exercise-wardrobe clean out.
  • Just back from a 9km run this morning (think that's about 5 miles ish). Just round the local streets. It was raining a bit but still nice really. The legs were a bit tired though and i had to persuade myself that pain-means-improvement up some of the hills!
  • I'm not at all comfortable calling myself a runner yet, but I just started C25k about a week ago and I'm getting up realllly early tomorrow morning to get my "run" in (more like jog) before work at 7am. And...since I don't have a car, I'm biking to work. So...yeah.
This is all very new to me (well not the biking, I've been doing that) so I just want to make sure I'm staying on track and checking in here once in awhile. I want to complete the C25k program before the Turkey Trot 5k!! It will be my first one ever!
  • So yesterday morning i participated in this "fun-run" at 6 am led by a group from my gym. There were maybe 20 runners. It was my understanding that this was truly supposed to be a FUN RUN (at about 4 miles). Of course, theres always that person or people who are so freakin competitive that "fun run" isnt in their vocabulary. im fine with that. My intention was to hang back, meet some new people, make some conversation, whatever. HOWEVER, there was ONE person out of everyone who was taking it SO FREAKING seriously. She HAD to be in front, was trying to push the pace a lot faster than many of the runners would be comfortable with (8 30s), and seemed like a complete b**ch! Normally id be like," whatever", but this girl was a "barbie". Do you know what i mean? Its 6 am, and her hair and makeup are perfect. and her shoes color coordinate with her hat and her 200 dollar matching running outfit, with shorts so small my daughter could fit them There was no way i was going to let a Barbie beat me-- "me" who rolled outta bed and may or may not have even brushed my hair or teeth, with a little dry crusted spaghttti sauce around my chin from last night, and mascara "racoon" circles. "Me" who chose to wear the shirt that stinks the least, and forgot to put on one of my socks. You get th drift
So were running along, and i just kinda hang back, let her pick the pace that she thinks will impress every body. Then with about a mile to go, im like, "ok, im done playing with barbie" and i TEAR off after a stop at an intersection. I fly past barbie, who shoots me a serious crusty, and then i can hear her trying to keep up with me. I keep increasing the pace and i hear barbie huffing behind me, untill she gives up and falls back a little bit. Then we get to another intersection, and shes TOTALLY shooting me crustys. its hilarious. And then i take off again, and she struggles to keep up then falls back, and starts getting passed by others. It made my day to "beat" her on this "fun" run.

Haha, I enjoyed your story and certainly know the type! I see them all the time in the park looking too perfect out on a run. I just don't get it?

Anyways... before I had asked if you burn more or less calories with a jogging stroller. Well, one thing is for sure you get an arm workout! This past week I've ran two very hilly runs while pushing the stroller. OH MY GOODNESS, I think my arms are going to fall off and my back is so sore! I think I'm going to skip doing some free weight arm exercises this week and just sit to sit-ups.
  • Quote: Running - I am impressed at five miles in under an hour! I usually finish my five mile runs in just a few minutes over an hour and I've got my eye on completing one in under the 60 minute mark. Sounds like you are doing great.
Thanks! I'm just hoping I can keep it up and it wasn't a one time deal. I'm hoping to run it again this weekend. Weekdays don't work because there's no way DD will stay in her stroller that long! I'm sure you'll be seeing the 60 mark soon!
  • Hi Everyone,

MollyBell, I've been jogging for 18 years (on and off, off and on!), and this spring decided I wanted to be a RUNNER. At first I figured it was all about goals -- joggers went out and put in some miles, but runners had goals, be they time, distance, whatever. More recently, I decided that I am a runner because I really, truly want to go out there-- need to get out there -- I feel better while I'm running than I did before I went. I realize, though, that that's my personal definition -- and that we all define it for ourselves.

I buy almost all of my running gear at Target. I like the C9 shirts. They don't ride up on me and they don't chafe, unlike my far more expensive Under Armour and Lucy gear.

Had my first run this morning since Sunday (3 miles). My legs felt weak. Ridiculously weak. I have a cold, and also did my first-ever yoga class yesterday (1 hour) so there were a lot of factors. Jog stroller too. Glad to have it under my belt. Yoga tomorrow and then a run again on Friday.

Looking forward to a 10K in November. I've only run in two official 10Ks, and they were both 6 years ago. I'd like to see what kind of time I can get.
  • mkroyer--lol i love your story! too funny.

thesame7lbs--I really like that idea that a runner is someone who has a goal. When I started running I would run a couple times a week but I didn't really have any goal and I never really thought about running anymore than I think about the elliptical. But once I got a goal I call myself a runner and think about it a good amount.

as I mentioned earlier, i hurt my foot. i was hoping that today it would be back to completely normal but I had a minor setback. BUT I did go to the gym and get on the treadmill and I even jogged some today! I wasn't sure I would be able to but I was fine and my foot actually feels so much better now that I did. Unfortunately I couldn't even jog a mile before I had some pain that worried me. But as long as I'm making progress I'm not too upset. tomorrow I'm going try to slowly jog perhaps 30 minutes, maybe less maybe more all depends on how my foot feels.
  • Pinkalarm-- dont push pain. I know how eager you must be to get back to running, but if you really are injured then getting back into it too soon will only prolong your problems in the long run. Maybe its a good idea to take days off in between each run you do?
  • Oh, and yesterdays run~ 6ish miles
today, a planned 8 at lunch. Not feeling so hot this morning though, so that 8 miles isnt written in stone
  • DH and I got in a really nice 4 mile run today along the river and DD had fun looking at the sail boats. It ended up being about 50 minutes, which was a bit longer than we'd like. Especially since towards the end DD was getting pretty annoyed in the jogging stroller so we really need to find something she likes to do in there... I guess it's motivation to always run faster!

My knee has also being acting up. I think it's because I've been pushing the jogging stroller up more lately AND have been doing some more hilly runs. I'm going to try and avoid the hills for awhile and see if that helps. I may end up going to the doctor if it goes worse but I'm not sure what kind of doctor to go to? It's definitely not a constant pain or really a pain at all. It's more like every once in awhile (especially immediately after a hill) if feels like my right knee gives out and I'll stumble. Weirdest thing.
  • I had one of those fabled runners-high runs this morning! Ahh, why can't they all be like that?

I set off at 6.30 and went into the national park near home and did a trail run that i've not done before. It was beautiful weather, and beautiful scenery. The birds were tweeting, there were 3 pretty little creek crossings, all the flowers were out, there was a big hill to slog up and i even enjoyed that!

I've got to sit on a plane for 22hrs from 1pm today though, so that'll knock the enthusiasm out of me!!
  • Well, I've officially been jogging for a full month now. I love it. Most of the initial aches and pains are gone. A month ago I couldn't jog a mile. Yesterday I jogged 5k in just under 39 min. Not fast, but already way down from the high 40s of a couple weeks ago. Even better, I felt great!!!!! Had to make myself walk the 1/2 mile cool down back to my house. And wow are my calf, quad and hamstrings looking good. Yipee!

I was kinda nervously about this week. I've bumped up all my workouts. When I'm no longer feeling any residual soreness its bump time for me. So, I added an extra short run for 4x a week and an extra day of circuit training. Feeling it from the new circuit routine but not the running. Have my circuit workout this morning then a 3.5 mile jog tomorrow. For me that'll be my longest distance yet. Then Sunday is a full rest. I'll have just over 20 miles in by Sun, just over half of it jogging (the other being walking). I'm pretty pleased with that.

Does anyone else run a lot of hills? All my routes are very hilly. Both steep short hills and long gradual increases. I don't have a single flat route! The 5k fun run I'm shooting for is a flat course. How will it effect my pace to run flat when I'm so used to hills?
  • Tafadhali--lately I've been running in the gym more than outside but YES it is hilly here! My hometown is actually in Virginia Beach which is the flattest place you'll ever be. But during the school year I am living in a valley in the Appalachian mountains, what a difference!

Good news for me, I was able to do a normal jog today! First time since I hurt my foot a week and a half ago. Just got done with a slow 4 mile run and I feel great, and so does my foot. I'm going to ice it just in case though and give it a nice relax in a hot bath
