  • Quote: Hi all - I am very confused (so what else is new!) I bought the pills two weeks ago and read everything including the book I bought seperately and I am still confused about how much fat I am supposed to eat, so I havent started!!! At 1600 calories how much should I have? Does it have to be equally divided by meal or just manage a daily total? What do you think would happen if I didnt do a phase 1,2 week and just started at a phase 3 level of fat?? I eat low fat cheeses and healthy peanut butter and hummus ( measured portions) but I think for Alli I would need to stop eating these foods and eat more carbs (even thought they would be healthy ones). What I eat currently fills me up and I have been losing weight so I just wanted to add the Alli but not sure if I will be starting off on the wrong foot. All of your insight and advice would be helpful.... thanks, Suzyq
The book states that at 1600 calories a day, you should have around 15 grams of fat per meal. 3 meals a day= 45 grams of fat. Don't try to "save up" your fat grams for one meal though....that's just asking for treatment effects! if you started at phase 3, without having eaten low fat (15 grams per meal or less) in the preceding days you could def. suffer treatment effects.

    gallstones

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

preppie - I can't find any evidence online for slimfast causing gallstones or other gallbladder problems, even circumstantial evidence as posted in the alli forum here - except there. I'm not a doctor, so do ask one if you're really concerned. Everyone has things they don't like to do/use - for some it may be meal replacements. FWIW, *personally* I'd rather structure my diet around a product like slimfast than use a fat-absorption blocker like alli. But that's why I use slimfast, and not alli. I also have a deep loathing of artificial sweeteners. It doesn't make them bad, but I do avoid them like the plague. That's one reason I *like* the slimfast program.

What CAN cause gallstones or other gallbladder problems is very rapid weight loss (among other things). People with gallbladder problems are often overweight, and typically told that weight loss will help. If the loss is too rapid it can exacerbate the problem. The person posting on the alli forum about slimfast is talking about something that happened 10 years ago. At that time the slimfast program was shake-shake-meal, likely much lower calories than today. So it's quite possible that someone could use slimfast to restrict calories very severely and cause very quick weight loss. This *can* cause gallbladder problems. I remember when I was in my teens there were "meal replacement" plans available which consisted of ONLY shakes, no meals, and limited calories to about 660/day. (Yes, I'm 40, so it was a while ago .) This could be equally problematic.

Remember too that the formula of slimfast has changed in 10 years. If, indeed, there was a problem with it (rather than its application), it's no longer the same product it was at that time. I also think if we were seeing serious problems with it there would have been news and/or lawsuits (at least in the US). One or two people does not an issue make.

Anyhow, I guess this is a long winded way of suggesting not to worry about what people post. There are people who like and dislike pretty much every diet option available. Some swear by Atkins, South Beach, slimfast etc. Others have intense dislikes of certain programs. If you have a concern about yourself, talk to your doctor.

    Hope this helps,
    Jax
  • Thanks for the welcome! Katallan and ThinGirl in Fat Body!
Another question of mine is sometimes I don't get enough sleep in my work week, what can I take or eat for energy.
I know energy drinks are a big NO NO!!! NOW! Anyways, would love to buddy up with someone. Is anyone out there that works night shift like me?? No more excuses!!! I am losing weight! I am on the band wagon!!!

StillTryinCONGRATULATIONS!!!! Keep up the Good Work!!!!

Bye, I got to do some things around the house before I'm off to town, then working tonight.

I plan to start Alli, but still unsure about the energy thing, working nights really puts a strain on things. Sometimes I don't get enough sleep, just don't want the vertigo or nausea. Just wondering, thanks for all the advice!!
  • I think we need our own "area" on this board since this one is getting long, I think there are enough people taking Alli to warrant it? What do you all think? Anyhelp MODS?

As of now, I would honestly just start a new thread for every month. Like on August 1st having someone start a thread called something like "Alli Support Thread-August" or something like that, then I can come and close this one.

There isn't enough really, honestly, to devote a section of the forum to it. Most of the activity is really heavy because Alli was released recently-and because you ladies are talkative.

I believe that it still belongs in General Diet Plans for now. If that should change, I will let you know.
  • OK THANKS, JUST ASKING! Thanks for the rapid answer, and it does make sense that it is so active since it is new....Your great Aphil
  • Welcome to everyone who just started Alli, glad to see you here.

StillTryin - Your doing great, so happy to hear its kicking in for you. I am noticing a lot of changes since I'm into my third week also.

Its my TOM so I was wondering to myself, I may have lost more than what is showing on the scale. I'm usually 3/4lbs up during that time, so can't wait till its over to see what the real verdict is. Go Us and Alli!!!

I too agree this should have its own area. Wouldn't this fall under "Diet Plans" like all the other ones I see where there's WW, LA etc.?

Anyway, congrats to everyone's recent loss. And to anyone whose had a bad day, we have them all the time, just get back on that wagon the next day and keep movin' on - thats what I've been doing.
  • We could always do a "new" weekly post. Say on Sunday of each week? That way it would be less pages.

A section of the forum is dedicated to a certain plan when it shows that it has stood the test of time (Weight Watchers, South Beach, Calorie Counters, etc. have all been here for eons...) and it is shown that the activity of this group will also stand the test of time.

There is a lot of advertising, and goings on with Alli right now, because it is brand new. It is popular. I am seeing it advertised in every major store, and in my recent Fitness and Shape magazines that I got in my mail. But, will the activity here, in this area and this thread-still be as active 3 months from now, or 6 months from now? That is the key.

There are a lot of plans out there that are bumpin' and busy for a month or two, and then there is no posting for a while. A few months later someone else starts a thread and it gets going again, etc. There have been months here where there isn't a post at all about Slim-Fast, and the next month there are tons of posts. The General Diet Plans area is for all diet plans which are not busy, or large enough, or established enough, to have their own section of the forum.

A few months from now, if things keep up, it might change-but for now, it is fine where it is.
  • Hello everyone!! Well I did it...I started!!! Yesterday was my first day on Alli. I didnt have it with breakfast, then lunch was so low in fat I didnt have it with that either but I ate WAY TOO MUCH! So I planned to have a light dinner of a lein cuisine pizza (only 8 fat grams) I decided to go ahead and have a pill with it since it was over 5 grams. Later in the night I got some serious munchies so I had some sf/ff banana pudding and some light popcorn. Then my tummy got upset. I dunno if I'd call it a TE but I did visit the porc. god, nothing major (sorry TMI). I'm raring to go again today!

I've noticed that I was super thirsty last night and this morning I had the hardest time waking up.

I did have to comment about Slimfast "causing" gall stones. I have done the Slimfast plan, in fact I was a community leader for a support group for it and was in pretty close contact with their nutritionists. Also I've taken nutrition courses (I was going to become a RD at one point) There is nothing in Slimfast that "causes" gallstones. Several years ago I had a gallstone attack and did ALOT of research on them both with the nutritionists and the doctor I saw. What Jax states in his post is absolutly correct. What generally can spur gallstones in people losing weight is rapidlyand/or fasting (among other things)...which you see with the old Slimfast plan. The Slimfast plan has changed dramatically over the past few years, its no longer a shake for lunch and a shake for breakfast then a sensible meal. If you research the plan now you'll see you eat quite a bit of food with the plan now. I lost over 75 lbs in less than 6 months. there are 4 F's to gallstones....fat, forty, female and fertile. The majority of gallstone sufferers have the 4 Fs (none of them being use Slimfast) If you are a candidate for gallstones and add to it rapid weightloss of a plan like slimfast used to be....gallstones could be in your future. My mother had gallstones and she never had slimfast in her life before having to have the gallbladder removed.

Okay off the soapbox. I hope everyone is having a wonderful OP and TE day!! I'm very excited to meet my first Alli goal!!!

  • Hey Everyone!!
I went to town and bought tons of ff stuff. I also bought the Alli starter pack!! I am very excited. I am going to wait till tommorrow or the weekend to try I think I haven't ate much today, sleeping late and shopping, now almost time to get ready to go off to work. I think I may go eat a salad. Anyhow, my hubby just chuckled when I said I hate to run to town to get that diet pill and some food. I am sure he is thinking, "here she goes again!" But no, I AM SERIOUS, this time!

Anyone have tips about working on the night shift??? Hard to stay on task! But I definitly will do this, This time. Later you guys, and congrads on everyone that is losing!!!! I will post in the am.
  • Still no TE's for me, I feel fine, had a light lunch with no need for Alli, waiting for something to happen LOL

sugarandspice, my hats off to you for working the nightshift, I don't think I would be able to adjust to sleeping in the daytime. Good luck with all your new healthy foods, enjoy!
  • Thingirl...well I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed for no TE...its still working without those! LOL!

Sugarandspice...hello and welcome! Remember that you dont eat fat free with Alli, you've gotta eat fat in order for the stuff to work. Good luck to you!
