  • Quote: Slmn1 - How long does the library allow you to read the books?
Maryea- When you check them out you chose from a list of times, and the longest time is 14 days. I am not as busy as a lot of you ladies, LOL, and I do spend a lot of time reading. 4 books in 2 weeks is doable for me. If I don't make it they will just take them back, but I can always check them out again.

Rie -When my daugher-in-law got her e-reader last Christmas I didn't think I would ever want one because I buy most of my books used and would never want to pay full price to buy them. When I heard about borrowing e-books from the library, I went in and asked them about it. That changed my mind and I bought mine. At the time, I thought you had to go into the library to download them, but when I found out I could do it on my own computer I was amazed! Works great for this recluse who hates to leave the house! You don't even need an e-reader to read the books. You can read them right from your PC. It would work out best if you used a laptop.

I read somewhere that there are some publishers who do not allow borrowing ebooks, or charge the library an excessive fee for them. The library does have to buy the rights to the downloads, but some publishers are charging more. I guess they want people to buy the books so they make more money. I often wonder if this will become so popular that the publishers will not allow it anymore. If they do that, I will go back to reading my used books.
  • Gayle, sorry about your knee pain. I hope the ibuprofen works.

Donna, sorry about your hip pain.

Marie, sorry you do not like your job. Is retirement in your near future? We could combine your's and Zoe's retirement parties.

Nancy, I know how you feel. If you don't check in here daily, you get REALLY behind.

Karen, CONGRATULATIONS to your son. Sorry the meds are making you dizzy. I always do my posts in WORD or NOTEPAD. 3FC site is too unstable.

Mary, sorry you are not feeling good.

Rosey & Freda, sorry about your back pain.

Zoe, I smiled when I read about you hating long phone conversations. All my friends and relatives know that I do MUCH better with email than with phone. I HATE long phone calls!

Rie, did you see the new twist to the President's Award site? They have added healthy eating. I am within 19,000 points of earning my second medal. Did you do your event?

Hello, Carol Sue & Hermit Girl & Donna Marie & Arrospark & Sueurban. WELCOME!

Gayle, I think it takes about a week for Celebrex to kick in. I have cut mine from 2 times/day to 1 time/day. So far, it seems like whatever gastric problems I was having were caused by the celebrex.

Bobbi, Karen, Freda, Rosey, Anyone I Missed, I am thinking about you and anxious to get back to daily reading/posting.

Have a gread rest of your day,

    Lynn
  • Hola, Lovely Goldens!

Oh, Rosey, I think buying a new washer and dryer is a fine idea… and I’d be very excited about it! I remember the story you told of when you bought the last one (alone with 4 kids, washing with a rock in the stream, etc… and finally having ENOUGH and ordering the appliances, unbeknownst to your DH). I think you’re due a new set after all this time.

CONGRATULATIONS on moving your weight squiggly! It’s about time to go clothes shopping, isn’t it? How are you doing with your mobility?

Mary – I hope you’re feeling better. I don’t know anything about soy and so would have no opinion about your digestive woes except to note that maybe you’re just sick of the diet? Not really, but that would be MY excuse!! I’m very proud of your perseverance.

Lynn – I’m glad the tests are all coming back negative, but it would be nice for you to have an idea why you’re feeling poorly. I’ll be interested to hear if the Celebrex continues to be the main suspect. Your symptoms sound scary and uncomfortable!

I learned from you, too, to type my 3FC stuff on a Word document (and save it frequently), then cut and paste into the 3FC site. I’ve lost too many, and I get, um, like, pissy (can I say that?)?

Bobbi – your recipe for turkey cups sounded GOOD. Did you hear back from the allergist? Good luck with the no-antihistamine regimen... and I hope the headaches don't come back. However, if they do, then you'll KNOW...

KarenFL – you must be so proud of your son! That’s really good news for him.

Nancy – good to hear from you! Since you’re in contact with Marie, we don’t worry about you unduly. It’s still nice to “hear” your voice, though! How is the darling DSD doing?

CK – hope your visit with your son goes well. I’m sure you’re anxious to see him. Did your eyes turn black and blue? Have you been able to find a Lencrafters (in CO Spgs, for sure) or someplace to get your glasses fixed? Be safe!

Oh, Marie – computers! The damn thing (can I say that??) froze up on me again last night, so I called the HP tech… what good techs they have! I’m so impressed! Anyway, we determined that free AVG was fighting with the TrendMicro Titanium virus programs; we tried to uninstall AVG (several times!) and were unable to do so. I ended up doing a total system restore to the original factory settings, had to reinstall Juno, printers, Office, etc., etc., and etc…. but now it definitely is okay! As my SIL says, “what a NOSEBLEED!!” The tech’s first words were “take it back” but we quickly got it straight that I do NOT return items, that I expect them to work… so FIX it. And he did. I was so very impressed. Between him and the ComputerGod, I think all bases are covered.

Gayle – when GM was having her knee pain, prior to the cortisone and after the first ER trip, she was told to keep a level of medication in her system. They had her on two Motrin 3 x a day for an indefinite time. That, of course, was probably too much, but I think the steady level did help her. I try to take something at least every 3-4 hours, before the pain kicks in; if not, and if I start hurting, I really hurt. It’s all such a pain (no pun intended), but it’s life, yes? I hope you feel better!

CarolSue – I am definitely not a computer expert. I know what I know very well, but this newfangled stuff gives me a migraine! I’m lucky to have a ComputerGod who works independently and isn’t expensive. Marie is our resident computer expert, I think; however, she works at a much higher level of computer business than most of us, so it’s sometimes hard to understand what she’s talking about… and often all I hear is “blah, blah, blah, and blah…” Marie – can you help CarolSue?

I came home with a migraine, but food has helped considerably. However, I had in mind that a nap would be a fine, fine idea... and I'm seriously considering it still. Work is going well. I'm very lucky to have it, and I continue to be GratefulGussie, the ExemplaryEmployee!

Hope you're all having a good day! PT/Zoe - hola! Everyone, later! Welcome, any newbies!

  • Carol Sue, I don’t know how much techs out in PA would charge, but the techs from my office when they’re doing private work fixing computers, charge 25-35 an hour. Me, I’d charge upwards of 50 an hour. But if the laptop isn’t too old and slow, it’s cheaper than a new one and a tech will setup your wireless and all the equipment. And they’ll know how to secure your wireless system.

Gayle, I’m glad you’re feeling better. Sometimes the simpler meds are the better ones. I remember being prescribed every mental health drug for bipolar and I swear the only one that made a decent difference was plain old prozac.

Lynn, scary thing is I do like my job. Normally. With the economic mess, there have been so many cutbacks that I’m doing the job of a few and I don’t feel I can 1) get it all done and 2) do a good, thorough job. And I’m nowhere near retirement. So I bought a powerball ticket. And very glad that your stomach problems seemed to have a cause you could pinpoint. I hope you find the balance between the Celebrex and stomach issues.

Donna, LOL at the computer woes. Never ever install two antivirus programs on a computer. They think the other one is a virus and pretty much halt the computer. Of course you could have gone Mac and gone virus protection free. I love my Mac but still have to use PCs at work. But I just love my home computers (and work MacBook).

Wow, a quiet day on the GG 3FC site. This hardly took anytime to do personals. Since I want to write, I’m good with that. I rode my bike on the fluid trainer after work and you’re gonna read words that rarely leave my mouth of fingers – I did not like exercising today. I was counting down the workout in seconds. I’d call out to Kai “Seven hundred twenty seconds left”. I truly don’t think she cared in the least. Fr some reason my legs were tired and my but was sore from nearly the first minute. Tomorrow morning is elliptical and that will be better. I was enjoying the Shania Twain concert I had blasting on the big screen. Actually I still have it blasting. This morning was my morning to walk the doggies. It was BEAUTIFUL out. The sky was pitch black and the stars just twinkling. There’s something to say for having no street or house lights on at five am. The temp was cool but not cold. Wonderful way to start the day. Oh, and I got along with the curriculum director that has been driving me nuts the last month. So it was a banner day. I didn’t even want to pin his picture on my punching bag today (yes I have one in my office and it comes in handy to reduce stress – visitors use it too). The doggies are ready for dinner so I’ll copy this back to 3FC (I stopped typing live posts about 4 years ago after way too many posts flew into oblivion).

    Marie
  • Hey, Marie, where were you when I didn't know any better? I've always, since the dawn of time and my first computer, had multiple virus softwares installed. PCs never had a problem, just this idiot laptop. I'm pretty happy with it since I started over (sigh) last night! Lesson learned, though!!! Thanks for your advice, always, even if I don't understand it all the time!!
  • Hello Goldens!

This is my third post of the day. GRRRR! The first two were lost into oblivion. Interestingly, I was complaining about the 3fc site misbehavior…. LOL I guess it got me!

Good news today. The owner of the car wash came to look at my pickup and said that if I take it to the body shop, they will pay to fix it. I think the scratches can be buffed out.

I spent much of the day transferring phones to our new phone service for our cell phones. Our previous service was awful. Today one of my employees lost a call while counseling a suicidal person. We got him back but it was hair raising. I was so glad that we could switch. Of course, now I have to learn a new phone…

Lynn, yes I did the walk and I am thinking that I am hooked! I saw the changes in the presidential challenge but I stick with the exercise so far because I already maintain my food log. I am about 19000 from the bronze medal. I find it strangely motivating. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Donna, I had the same experience with having avg and another virus program. Hopefully, you will now be done with computer stuff for a while.

Marie, I hear you! There are days when it is just not fun. I wish I knew what causes that. Good for you for hanging in there. Even though Kai didn’t have a lot of sympathy. Tee Hee.

Mary Yay! On the weight loss! I hope your tummy feels better.

Rosey, the incredible shrinking woman! Is your mobility still continuing to improve? What kind of washer did you buy?

I wonder how many of us lost posts today? Maybe that is why it is quiet in here???? I learned my lesson and composed this in Word….

Tonight I came home to lamb chops on the grill with portabella mushrooms and artichokes.. Yum. DS sure likes to cook and can sure find ways to cook things on my plan. Bless him! I am still struggling a bit with low blood sugar. I think I may need less meds. I see the doc the middle of the month.

Well, I need to settle in for the night and read a while. Hugs to all. Talk to you tomorrow!
    Rie
  • Good morning GG's,

Two days down ~ two to go. I got out of work on time last night and got to spend time with Sara's family. It was a nice evening.

Wow ~ reading the posts yesterday ~ lots of GG's ailing ~ hope everyone gets to feeling better soon.

Not much going on here. Day off on Friday. We are going to go take a tour of the "Y" facility (the one with the year round indoor pool). I am excited about the water walking.

Guess I'd better quit fooling around and finish getting ready for work.

Hope you all have a good day.

    Take care

Thanks, Marie. That $$$$ doesn't sound unreasonable. We just bought the router recently at Staples and one of their tech guys was very helpful in helping us choose which one we needed for what we wanted to do. I think I will stop in there and see if they can help us. I think they hire out techs. We are getting so close so I don't think it would require much to get it all running. I always use my desktop, but since we have the router DH would like to get the laptop set up so he can play around on it. My BIL would be able to help us, but he lives out in Las Vegas. Hmmm, does this sound like a good enough reason to go on a little vacation? LOL

    Turkey Veggie Meatloaf Cups

Hi Bobbi, I am really curious as to how you liked the Turkey Veggie Meatloaf Cups. I would never think to put zucchini in meatloaf but I think it's a great idea. If you give it a good review, I think I'll try it.
  • Hola, All...

Rie - I always use Word, luckily. Yesterday, I tried to use the "Advanced" area, where I always paste my longer replies... and it would not take. I tried three times and then just pasted into the "Quick Reply" area. I don't know what's going on lately. But it is Most.Annoying!

Nothing to report. Today is the first day off since I've been working that is actually MINE, and I'm thrilled! No GM, no doctors, no outings for her, nothing... MINE. SamCat let me sleep in (but not with good cheer!), and I'm already enjoying my day.

Hope the travelers are well. Everyone, have a lovely day!!
  • No time to chat, DH arrived home yesterday with a nice Antelope. I had to run into town for Freezer paper, hang up a load of clothes and now help him cut/package the meat up. I have a quick question for all you cp geeks who know what you're doing. My cp has been running sooooooo slow, I ran the clean up, defragmented it and ran both virus programs. I keep getting this message: a script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slow.
    HOW DO I FIX THIS?
As to the Turkey cups, I wasn't impressed. First of all the instructions say to put the zucchini, peppers and onions in a food processor and roughly chop. NO, don't do that. Process the zucchini separately in the food processor and squeeze out all the water before mixing it into the meat. The turkey cups were mushy, blah! The taste was good and they firmed up some the next day. I froze all of them on a cookie sheet, then popped them into a zip bag and left them frozen. I made a batch of lentil soup yesterday for low calorie lunches and I plan of throwing one turkey cup into my bowl of soup daily.
    Gotta run, DH is calling.
P.S. I'd appreciate detailed instructions on how to manage the script, and I mean detailed, step by step instructions for a computer illiterate person like me.
  • No time to chat right now as we got up late and are headed to the gym. Just wanted to let you know my weight is now 157.6. I'm still not changing my sig until a month as I know how I usually flucuate and I want to be sure it's real. LOL I'll probably get back here later today. So my loss for the second week on MF is 2.6#.
  • Good Morning, Everyone,

WHAT A TREAT!!!! I get to play on the Golden Girls site and do not have to hurry to get back to a course. My next course does not start until November, so I can do personals for the WHOLE month of October!!!!

Seems like I always follow a circular journey with my ailments. Start with my GP, get referred to Specialist, go through a bunch of junk with the Specialist, and end up back with my GP who ultimately fixes whatever is wrong with me. Today, after all the different tests, he decided to add another antacid to see if that will help. NOTE: I guess it was not the Celebrex because last night had a VERY painful evening and I had cut out Celebrex since last week.

Oh well – you know my favorite saying – “Worse things have happened to nicer people.” Sooner or later someone will figure out what’s wrong, or it will just go away.

Quote: Lynn – I’m glad the tests are all coming back negative, but it would be nice for you to have an idea why you’re feeling poorly. I’ll be interested to hear if the Celebrex continues to be the main suspect. Your symptoms sound scary and uncomfortable!
    Hi Donna,
Maybe there are multiple culprits? Unless my general aches and pains get REALLY bad, I am going to try to stick to the one-a-day dose of Celebrex AND avoid fried foods AND take the additional antacid. The pain is kind of scary – I keep thinking maybe it is a heart attack.

Quote: [COLOR=Purple] Lynn, scary thing is I do like my job. Normally. Hi Marie,

I am sure that you have posted it, but I must have missed it – what is your job? You wrote about a curriculum director so I am assuming you work in education.

About the powerball ticket – I used to work with statisticians and one of them proved to me (statistically) that I have the same odds of winning a lottery if I do not buy a ticket as I have if I do buy a ticket (people have found winning tickets and have been given winning tickets). Ever since, I never bought a ticket and I always expect to win.

I never knew that about the 2 virus protection software. I had Norton and McAfee on my last computer and had a BUNCH of problems. I am not sure whether or not I have Norton on this one. When I finish this post, I will check.

The software that I use when I teach for the University of Phoenix does not work very well with MAC’s. So, until they get the system more compatible, I will keep using a PC.

    Hi Rie,
That dropped suicide phone caller sounds like a Saturday Night Live skit. I am sure it was terrible to go through.

I did not add on the eating goal, but I am thinking about it. I could really use some motivation to get me back to cooking/eating healthily.

I know what you mean about the walking. I do NOT want to do another half-marathon, but I am thinking about a 10K. I am having REAL trouble getting back to my regular (1-2 hours) exercising. I think I need a training schedule to get “back on track.”

Quote: Wow ~ reading the posts yesterday ~ lots of GG's ailing ~ hope everyone gets to feeling better soon.
    Hi Gayle,

I thought the same thing. It seems like a LOT of us are aching and paining.

    Hi Mary,

I aM dOiNg ThE hApPy DaNcE for you. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Donna, just picture two rabid men fighting over one woman who can't choose who to believe. That's two computer viruses fighting over one computer. I hope you're enjoying the heck out of your first "ME" day off.

Val, copy and paste from your word processor back into 3FC. Never type in 3FC because the odds are you'll lose it. BTW, it's way easier to do personals toggling back and forth. And Yeah for your 'Boys. And very good news on the car wash resolution! And today's elliptical workout was fun. I think it was the dregs from the workday spilling into the workout.Today I worked out before work.

Gayle, I hope you like the Y and get to play in the pool year round.

Carol Sue, good idea going to Staples for help and if nothing else they can give you a referral to someone that makes house calls. And your BIL would have to visit you to get your home network set up. Not the other way around.

Bobbi, see the post to Donna. Use just one antivirus program. If you don't feel after removing the additional ones that there is still something wrong, you can google free online virus scanners and run one through the internet. My guess if you have a virus. There's other things you can do but Donna would say I'm just going "blah, blah, blah".

Mary, congrats on the weight loss. You're doing great. Is this a program you can do for life? Or want to do for life?

Lynn, I'm the database manager and webmaster and assessment coordinator (took the job over from the director but I wouldn't want that title) and network admin (2nd in charge of that thank goodness not 1st). So I work with computers and assessments all day. I have a masters in education. Anyway, I like computers most of the time. I never expect to win the lotto but I like that for a buck I can dream and have more entertainment than if I went to a $7 movie. Preface this by saying I am not an Apple salesperson (used to be a stockholder but bought a timeshare in Cancun with the proceeds instead). Macs can dual boot into Windows or Mac. You can set the preference to Windows or Mac. Donna - just ignore the rest... So last year our district was hit with a nasty virus (did you all know that the latest way for viruses to infect computers is through PDF files - you can hide java scripts in them and noone is the wiser). Anyway, only two Windows computers in the district weren't infected. The Windows side of my MacBook and the Windows side of my co-worker (network admin) MacBook. That says a lot. His virus protection on that side was up to date and mine wasn't. It hadn't updated in four months. But the mac hardware wouldn't allow the infection even though it was running windows. I think that's cool. So on DH's Mac with a Windows partiion (I used a virtual partition on it so I could have Mac and Windows open at once- I know blah, blah, blah), I havne't installed virus protections. I could use our gold level protection from work if I wanted but I trust my Mac to keep it all safe. Now the whole point of my really long story was that the Windows side of using a Mac is faster than on a Windows computer so Lynn, you're software would work perfectly on it. With Mac, you get to use the full processor speed and not have 25% of it used for anitivirus to scan every little file. Ok, I'll shut up now.

I admit it. I'm still at work. I hit the wall. I can't think, I can't process anymore. They've pushed me over the edge. My brain did a windows blue screen of death. It's done. I just wanna go home. Since I can't do that, I thought I'd take a 3FC break. Now a little later, I do feel my brain starting to work again. And BTW, I'm an idiot. I volunteered to take on another project. Just call me stupid. But everyone is overworked and it made logical sense that it was part of my job. I'm an idiot. OK, my little break is over and I'll get back to work. If you want to see our new canned website that did cause the last two months of frustration designing, here's the link. I like my other website better as I can manipulate the code, but this site is better for teachers and parents. Communication between the two is vital so this is a good thing long term. Short term I wanted Zoe to smash the sales person. His name is Pinocchio. A big liar.

Well see, I was thinking I could take the laptop and the router and the whole kit and caboodle out there and he could set it up. No? LOL
