  • Quote: I can understand the part about eating more carbs and holding more water. But the part about retaining water because you're exercising hard - I've never heard that before. When I exercise hard I'll weigh less the next day, unless drink it all back in the meantime. Even then I usually lose a bit.
Its what the muscles do when they've been stressed and microscopically torn (so they can grow)

    Quote:
Exercise physiologist Trenton Niemi, MS explains that the tearing of muscle tissue and the rupture of muscle cells initiates an inflammatory response which peaks 24 to 36 hours after exercise. As a part of this response, the hormones ADH and aldosterone cause the kidneys to retain water. After a few days balance is restored and water weight is eliminated.
And it bring it back to the original post, if I was going strictly by the scale, then every weekend would be a failure. Which is completely not true! Its making me stronger and healthy, and happens to result in a temporary higher number on the scale.
  • Thanks so much for the support!
Does anyone know what time is the best time of day to weigh yourself? I wanted to see how much I went up since this morning but surprisingly it went down the three pounds. Is it best to weigh in the morning or in the evening?
  • I do both because I like to see the fluctuation. But the weight I record is my morning weight. It's really up to you though!
  • I think the morning after going potty but before eating is a good time to weigh. what you eat and drink all day is going to have a huge impact on your weight because your body hasn't processed the food yet. But do what works for you and be consistent.

You certainly can weigh any time you want. I was always pleasantly surprised to see that my weight was lower in the AM than the night before on almost every occasion that I chose to weigh at night "just to see."

  • Hang in there, I know it is frustrating and discouraging at times, but if we keep at it and don't give up.....That scale WILL go down!
I am having the same problem and instead of getting upset...it is making me get mad and work even harder towards my goals and it actually makes me evaluate and re-evaluate what I am doing and keeps me changing it up till it works!
BUT LISTEN....I read somewhere that in order to avoid injury and water retention in muscles, You must let them rest enough between workouts, So maybe you should try only working out every other day until you build strenghth in those muscles ....Just a thought!
Anyway...I understand, but we WILL get through it!
  • I've eaten soup and shot up 3 pounds for days. One stupid meal with a little too much salt can trick the scale because you're retaining water. It doesn't have anything to do with your actual progress.

I've also had the experience of eating way too few calories and putting my body into "starvation mode." That stuff is NOT a myth. You can cut too many calories at once and scare the crap out of your body and make it cling to fat because it doesn't know when the next meal is coming. You're gonna have to play around with things and figure out what works for you.

But please don't give up. I often feel like what's the point and sometimes I have to focus on my health and the way I feel rather than the numbers because it's too frustrating. I've even taken months off and just focused on not gaining any weight and it's actually worked out pretty well. I'll lose 20-30 lbs, maintain that for months and then get amped up to lose some more. It kind of takes off some of the pressure and stress of CONSTANTLY weighing myself and exercising like a fiend. I've read that in the long run people who do that are more likely to keep off the weight.

Anyway, hang in there and believe in yourself. I often catch myself thinking "what's the point? I CAN'T lose weight" and then I remember one of my favorite quotes by van Gogh:

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced."

So tell that voice in your head to go to **** because you got this.
  • Thank you for the support. I really do appreciate it.
I was so frustrated yesterday, I had thoughts of opening the fridge and eating whatever but I didn't. I ate some strawberries instead and they were so good. I am proud of myself, small steps.
  • stop weighing more than weekly if its gonna upset you.

When I was doing a lot of long distance running, I'd be up a couple of lbs the day or two after a long run or really tough interval run. Not immediately, obviously, because I'd sweat out a couple of lbs while exercising. But then I'd drink, eat, and the next day my muscles would be a sore, which was a sure sign the scale would be up a bit. Retaining water while repairing damaged muscle is pretty normal.
