Taylor makes scales that go to 400 pounds for under $50.00. I have one that goes to 330 that I got at Kohl's. If you google "taylor scales" a ton of sites come up where you can order them.

Many have multiple user modes and measure body fat and water and also calculate BMI and BMR. A small current is sent through your feet and is impeded differently by fat, muscle, water, etc. Most also weigh in pounds, kilograms, and stones. I've found mine to be very reliable. It is encouraging to see your weight in kg when you're used to pounds. The number seems so small!

That's what I got when I first started since my old scale only went to 305 before ERROR flashed across the read-out. I got my Taylor at Wal-mart for $35 I think. It's pretty accurate, only like 1/2 pound difference than the Doctors office, and exact with my old scale that now weighs me too. (Oh and just remember, if you're married, HIS money is YOUR money! )

I'm in Canada, and I ordered mine online from a company out west I think. It was a couple of years ago though. And I think I paid around $100 for it, including "rush" shipping.

I got a taylor scale from amazon.com. I like the old fashioned analog one that measures in both lbs and kilos and is large and sturdy. I think the one I got goes up to 400lbs. I paid under 50 dollars for it including shipping.

My mother purchased a scale for me that is rated I believe 400-450 from EatSmart, but you might actually want to get something rated at least 50lbs more than what you suppose you are weighing. I was around 280-300lbs and I had a digital scale that was rated for around 300lbs, and produced very unreliable results. I would step on the scale several times in a row and the numbers would vary like 10lbs. It was also misleading because if I was over 300lbs I really had no way to measure it, and that's probably why the scale was going nuts.

I think having a scale is important, but if you can't afford one right now keep moving forward with your health plan and once your financial situation improves then invest in the best scale you can afford.

Also, if you want a number to go by, you can also take your measurements. It is widely respected that inches lost is a more reliable form of monitoring weight loss, because often when you are losing weight you are gaining muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat, although it takes up a lot less space. So you may be physically smaller, but the scale is not moving much... which can tend to be quite frustrating if you are not also checking your measurements. Even if you have to tape two measuring tapes together, if the 60" is not long enough (not sure what your situation is... but my widest measurement at 306lbs is 56" at my hips, only 4" away from the end of the measuring tape), and do the math.

I had a problem finding a scale that had a capacity more than 330lbs - seems like this is a common weight to stop at.

For kicks, I checked walmart.ca and they have at least 2 models that go to 400 lbs. I got the WW one that is clear (always think I'm goig to break it) and measures BF % (not sure how accurate, but it jives with online calculators that use inches measurements)

I echo the sentiment about measuring; it's going to be a great way to track.

So, my remarks in a nutshell - try Walmart for the 400lb capacity scale and keep on measuring

BTW - I live in NB, so the Maritime Walmarts might have the same stock of scales.

OK so here is where I am right now. Two weeks ago I went to Crappy Tire to check out their 400lb scale. They had a floor model I and maxed it out. I HONESTLY think it was defective, as I had had a month or more of good eating under my belt and several weeks of regular exercise (and let us not forget I practically fasted for 5 days when I had the high fever with the acute Cellulitis), which means to "max out" a 400 pound scale I would have to be some mystery number above 400 and coming down from a number even higher..... all while wearing clothes that I bought to fit at 350. It just doesn't make sense, that is what my rational mind says, needless to say I walked out without a scale, b!tchin. Hubby thought it was all a big joke, until I reminded him we had not even been to a buffet (his weakness) in almost 4 months. This snapped (or slapped) him into my reality.

Now my emotional mind..... that is another story. I can hardly ever bring myself to go out and walk now (and the hot humid weather isn't helping). My food choices are not insane but they are nowhere near where they were two weeks ago. I also have some other situational major stressors going on right now which are feeding this depression. (If I disappear from the forum for a while it will be due to these situational stressors and not the nightmare at Crappy Tire)

I guess it was just too much to ask to be able to measure some progress and have concrete feedback in numbers.

fatgyrl - I don't know where you are in NS but there are beaches everywhere if you can afford the gas, I think some ocean time might help. Forget the scale and focus on applauding the changes you have made in your life you'ved done at least 944 minutes of walking in 20 days, that is CRAZY Be proud of yourself, think of the fitness gains you have had. And how the moving more has made you feel.

I wonder if a tape measure would be a satisfying alternate to scales if you really would like numbers for measuring your progress... It might even be a better indicator of progress if you are in a building fitness & muscles stage?
