Fast food AGAIN? NO!

  • Quote: Until I'm on my own, I have to do what the majority of the house wants to do, and they'd rather eat fast food than go to the store, buy the food, come home and prepare it.

    I wish, though.
Have you actually tried talking to your family about the food choices they make and how it affects you? For a long time I felt the same way you do-- if I want to eat, I have to eat what everyone else is eating, even if that includes things I really don't want to be eating. My mama did all the grocery shopping, the cooking (or the buying of fast food), everything. And that got me nowhere, especially since I'm the only vegetarian in my family, so if she made meat, I'd be "forced" to just eat whatever other junk was available in the house.

But after awhile, I realised that feeling of being forced to eat "bad" food was just an excuse. I started offering to help with the grocery shopping and the food preparation, and now magically there's always fresh, delicious, healthy foods in the house. If you work to take a more active role in what sorts of foods are in your house, those times when you feel as if there's nothing for you to eat should decrease.
  • Oh, dear, that's a tough situation.. I know that if I had to fall into the trap of 'do what the rest of the family is doing', not only would I not be able to sustain my veganism but I'd weigh as much as my parents do again. Seriously, what my parents have eaten for dinner the past several nights? Brown's fried chicken, Culver's, Arby's, a pizza, and before that Burger King. Ugh.

Can you have a talk with whoever buys the groceries and explain how their choices really affect your switch to a healthier lifestyle? I spoke to my dear mother about this and she understands the strong drive I've had to eat healthily(and cruelty free) and so we make sure we always have a supply of tofu, tempeh, beans, mushrooms, assorted veggies, ww bread, brown rice, ww pasta, fresh fruits, and the herbs/spices I need to cook all of these things in the house so I can prepare my own meals separate of the junk my parents usually eat. We've been really tight on money lately and though "value meals" at fast food joints seem like a bargain, we've actually found that my home cooked meals with fresh ingredients cost much less than the (surprisingly expensive in the long run) fast food that my parents get.

That saying reminds me of something my Dad, (rest his soul) used to say.

"Just because everyone else is sticking their head in the toilet doesn't mean you have to"
