Kaplods - tilapia eyeballs?!? REALLY???? OMG. :-)

Julie - I am planning to just slice it very thinly and dump it into my salad with tons of other veggies.

I'd get rid of it. It depends on the level of dislike vs your desire to have it, though. Trying new things is hit or miss. I picked up some edamame and both my husband and I went crazy for it. Started eating 1/2 or 1/3 cup of it every few days. With that newfound love in mind, I eagerly picked up some pomegranate seeds as well. And well, they didn't do it for me. Dislike is a strong word for them; it's more like 'they were okay' but they were small, and hard, and I didn't see them in future salads or as a lunchtime snack. Kept them for a few days 'just in case.' Then the container started leaking and I threw it out. :-) Not going to buy them again.

But the flipside is that I didn't like nuts growing up, and didn't start liking them until my mid 20s. I love them now, and only a few years after trying them again -- which took a few times and some urging from my husband -- I incorporate them into my healthy lifestyle. In fact, just before typing this I had 1/6 cup sliced almonds. My love for them is like how I used to view candy! No -- better!

Salmon, too. Always liked it well enough, I guess I'd say -- well enough for once or twice a year, when it came up. Started this lifestyle, so last year I started buying 80 calorie salmon patties for dinner. They were dry; they frankly weren't that good.

Kept buying them because I wanted to like them more (knowing how much more nutritious they were than the other fish I ate). After a few times of this, I randomly bought different salmons -- fillets -- for 285 calories each (I have the room -- and it's dinner!) They're delicious. I love them. They are exactly what I wanted salmon to be. They must be fattier, I concede, but if I could, I'd eat one every other night. As it is I look forward to salmon all week.

So I'm really glad I stuck with that (or more importantly, bought a different salmon -- the salmon I've had at restaurants is also wonderful).

I guess the values that we're raised with affect this too. When I still lived with my parents, I just learned never to waste meat. It was okay to let fruits/veggies/bread go bad, but meat? Nope. I remember at restaurants, if I couldn't finish a whole serving, my parents would say "well, at least finish the meat, and let's go". I never thought much of it. That's why I could so easily toss veggies, but the fish, I just felt bad wasting...

Plus, with fish, when the flavour is very, very fishy.... uugh, the whole house just smells of it... lol

Throw it out. Weight loss is heard enough without eating stuff you hate.

That being said, do keep trying new things. Your taste buds can change. I don't *love* fruits and veggies but I eat them anyway b/c they're so good for me.

I know. I was never fond of most fish, until moving to Wisconsin with my fish-loving Wisconsinite husband, and I never could stand eating whole fish (I found eating something that seemed to be staring back at me really creepy).

Now my absolute favorite fish dish is spicy tilapia at a local thai restaurant (and it's a whole fish). I guess I had been watching too much Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, because one day I decided I was going to try the eyeball, because he liked them so much. I wash absolutely shocked how good they were, and now they're almost my favorite part of the fish (I suck the head, too).

Just a few days ago, though I found out that all fish eyeballs are not the same. My hubby ordered a fried fish at a Mexican restaurant, and it was a whole fried fish. He doesn't eat the eyeballs, so I tried them. Ewwwwww, really fishy tasting, bitter, hard and gross (I spit it into a napkin).

Do a lot of research on foods before you buy them to get things similar to foods you already like. I used to attend school for culinary arts so this is easy for me.
I.e.
I buy salmon because it's so similar to chicken and it's chocked full of health benefits. Salmon is one of the best seafoods you can buy and it has great texture and not too much of a fishy flavor. You can cook it however you want, etc. etc.
It stinks spending money on food only to turn around and throw it out. :[

If I hear or see something I want to try then I try it...if I like it then great! If not it goes into the trash....the amount you pay for it is a good sacrifice to see if it's a food you'd like to add (at least for me!)
