  • I would love to be on a roller derby team. I was always thinking I should lose the weight first. I wasn't thinking of it as a way to lose the weight. Maybe after I reach my first mini goal, i will look into it!
  • New to the cruise
hey I'm new to the fabulous world of Roller Derby (and 3fc)!!!! Any information on how to be bad *** would help would be greatly appreciated!!!
  • i haven't really had a chance to check out roller derby here in the bay area but i was a big fan of the Arizona Derby Dames league. i loved the Coffin Draggers and i even had a lil woman-crush on Suzie Homewrecker (now in Kansas City ): )! i had strongly considered trying out but when it comes right down to it... i'm a big wimp!
  • I'm a roller derby girl
hello my name is nicole derby name Anime of the State. I skate for a recreational team in Indianapolis called the Circle City Socialites. Eventually we have hopes on becoming WFTDA certified. I have been skating for almost 4 months now. Its rough but I love it. I would love to talk to more derby girls who are like me. I mean not everyone was born with skates on our feet. the very first night I went to practice I literally spent the whole time learning how to get off the floor. Now I don't hit the floor as much but I know that if I do hit the floor I'll be okay...I mean I'm wearing pads!! haha well sorry I ramble

    well have a great day!!!!!
  • i just quit a few weeks ago. i couldn't keep up with grad school and derby and full time lead position at work...
practice was a blast! what a workout.
  • ^btw, derby name: dee splitz #14 for skeetown skirtz.

my first practice, i was on a time trial and loss my footing. i did total crotch to floor Chinese splits and it totally felt like excruciating slow motion. =dee splitz
  • Roller Derby chicks are hot!
  • I've always wanted to do it!
  • I am actually getting ready to start my fresh meat orientation. I am super uber big. 5"8 and 289. I was really worried about it at first but I was very athletic all my life up until a few years ago. Muscle memory I hope!
  • there's two teams out here in the bay area.. i would love to do it. but the bf works til late ;[ and no sitter... bah
  • I am such a derby girl wanna be. I even have my name picked ou--RumbleBee.
  • I hardly check in here anymore, but I've been doing derby for almost a year now. I love it, and while it's a great workout, the after parties are not helpful to my overall calorie intake.

Actually, what brings me back here this time is Rollercon. My husband is not thrilled about me going, but agreed that it would be a great reward for finally getting rid of some extra weight. My goal is 40 pounds by late July. Yikes.
  • Don't kill me,I can't help ressurecting this thread,I miss derby more than I can express.
I swear, derby is THE most amazing work-out I've ever done.I've been told heavy cardio/aerobic type stuff would work for my body-debry proved that beyond a doubt. After two months of practice I just FELT slimmer,my legs were holycrap ripped, and just...I felt spectacular.

Skating derby-style is a great workout I think no matter what your body type.Intense cardio, works pretty much your whole body what with the arm movement, the core tension from being in the proper stance, and of course the overall movement.I swear the best/worst thing we ever did in practice was a round of Suicides.Laps, then 5 pushups and situps;we went from 1 to 15 then back down.Dear god it hurt but afterward,I felt amazing.

Oh,my derby info-Ex Black and Bluegrass Rollergirl, formerly known as Jesterevil #616.When I finally get to go back, the name is changing.
  • I dont do roller derby, But i really really want to get into it when i lose some more weight!!! I used to skate (inline/aggressive) when i was younger, i was very good and i was very fast and i would love to knock some b*tches down lol!! Anyways i imagine it would be very good for weight loss!
  • I've been considering joining one of our roller derby teams here in Vancouver but figured I should get a bit fitter first... I didn't think about how practice could help me lose weight. I always thought, "when I get to 150 it'll be time". Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should go now, while I'm big-ish and able to knock *****es down with my weight... at goal weight I think my only friend would be speed cuz I'll be a tiny thing...
I guess I have the summer to find a pair of skates and practice breaking my face until the tryouts in September. I'd love to join a derby team, I'm sure it would help me stay active so much more!

For the current derby girls, has it really helped with your weight goals? Nevermind the post-game parties and such, that means a lot of calories but it doesn't take away all the exercise. Do you find you're fitter, or that your endurance improved, etc?
