I'm wondering whether the coach is confusing Mio with vitamin water or other brands of ready-to-drink low-calorie beverages that DO contain sugar alcohols.
I've never seen a flavor of Mio that actually contained sugar alcohols. The sweeteners used in Mio are sucralose (Splenda) and acesulfame potassium.
Sugar alcohols do present a bit of a challenge, because some people digest sugar alcohols (or at least some sugar alcohols) better than others. Using sugar alcohols often end up no-win situation. If you don't digest them well, you end up with very smelly gas and explosive diarrhea, and if you don't get the diarrhea, there's a good chance that you're digesting them well (meaning you're probably absorbing more calories than someone who does get the diarrhea).
