I've heard many protein powders contain steroids. Are there any that are guaranteed steroid-free or are even FDA approved, etc?

Whey powder is sold in grocery stores. I think if it contained steroids it wouldn't be allowed on the shelves. Most powders I've seen contain mostly whey and not much else

Steroids are illegal and would not be in any commercially available protein powders sold in the USA (there are online products that claim to contain steroids, but many of these are scams and either do not contain actual steroids or are being made in countries without such bans).

Whey protein certainly is FDA approved, it's a by-product of cheesemaking and has been consumed for as long as people have been making cheese. Whey is the liquid that is pressed out of the cheese, and whey protein powder is simply dehydrated whey (sold plain or with flavorings added).

There are some proteins powders that add stimulants and herbal ingredients with a variety of health claims (mostly muscle-building and/or fat loss), but these aren't "hidden" ingredients they're listed and very often advertised on the label for their alleged properties (which are not downplayed, in fact the reverse is true - the claims are often greatly exagerated). If you see ingredients you don't recognize, you can avoid the product or research the ingredient.

Whey Protein is the number one ingredient in Arctic Zero ice cream! Super YUM if you have a supplier nearby!

p.s. Under 130 cal. for the entire pint! Yes--PINT!

FYI for that French page: if you paste the URL in google, a translation option will offered. I live in Quebec, and thanks for the link!

The protein powder I use is Isopure Zero Carb Vanilla from Nature's Best. I got mine from Vitamin World (It's cheaper online than in their store but you can just mention that it's cheaper online and they'll give you the discount). I'm picky with protein shakes and flavor. I can't drink something that leaves a nasty aftertaste like some protein shakes but this seems to taste pretty good a 7.5 out of 10 in my opinion. I also used Cytosport Muscle Milk Light in Vanilla (10/10 with flavor in my opinion).
