My neice is 4. One day, oh, about 4-5 months ago, she made a comment of "big fat Aunt Sissy." My brother got onto her, and told her it wasn't nice to say things like that, made her apologize, etc. In a lot of ways, even though I was upset, I didn't fault her....she's 4....didnt know any better really. It was the first time something like that had come up from her. After my brother's talk with her, she understood it wasn't nice. Fast forward a couple of months later. She's crawled up in my lap and we're reading a book. She says to me "Aunt Sissy you aren't really fat....just a little bit....but its nice for me to have a place to sit." (She had just been on my brother's lap and made a comment about "daddy's bony knees hurting her butt." lol) Again...even though it hurt (truth does, doesn't it?) I didnt get mad at her. Just her 4 year old mind processing things.

DS is 4 and he says some stuff I can't believe. I feel kind of bad for him because he's just shouting out his observations... He screams it out every single time we drive near a tractor, bus, construction site, ice cream truck, etc. So for him to recognize something and not be allowed to say it is probably hard for him to understand.
I'm trying to help him in that department but I've found that people that "stand out" don't seem to mind his outbursts. I managed to stop him in time (I hope) with people that are severely overweight but DS once shouted to a guy in a wheelchair, "WOW COOL STROLLER!" I almost died but the wheelchair dude thought it was a riot!
Another time we were walking in the mall and DS yelled out, "WHAT"S WRONG WITH THAT KID???" and it started off a great conversation with that kid's mother about muscular dystrophy.
Recently, we were on our way to a specific office on the college campus and it was a bit of a walk from the parking lot. THere was a woman that we passed on the way who must have weighed 400+ and she was having a hard time but still trucking along. She ended up in the same office as us and DS (always yelling) shouts, "There she is again! She's SO BI-(clapped my hand over his mouth). Aye aye aye, I hope she didn't hear it.

heh. kids are cute. especially cause they aren't mine.

My husbands cousin has a kid and last year at christmas he was eager for the eating to stop and the present opening to begin...he came up to me with a raised eyebrow, patted my belly and said "You're done eating now, RIGHT?"

Oh yes, believe me, after that I was done! *LOL*

my daughter told me that she wants to eat spaghetti because it is healthy and she wants to stay a skinny minnie. and be healthy, not like mommy. mommy has a big belly. i thought. OMG. what am I teaching my kid.....

I went to go visit a friend a few months ago. She was 6 months pregnant. She has 2 others, one is almost 2 and the other almost 4. The older of the boys came up to me (I was slouched on the couch) and said "You have a baby in your belly too!" and squished my tummy.

Apparently, though, he thought EVERYONE had a baby in their belly, so I couldn't take it too horribly

ModK: DS (age 4) is also obsessed with pregnancy right now. He thinks everyone is pregnant, including our (male) dog, lol! My SIL just had her baby and DS and she talked about her pg a lot...
I wouldn't take it personally from a little one that age.

A couple of years ago my DD who was 10 or so came home from school all out of sorts. When I asked her what was wrong she got a little teary eyed and said "a boy on the bus called you fat." I paused for a moment looked at her and said "well... I am fat" she gave me a little smile and all was good again. What the kids said didnt hurt my feelings but the fact that it hurt my daughters feelings planted the seed for me to do something about it.
