IP alternative pros - I'd love your feedback/research on this product.

I've been doing the "poor peoples" version of IP from the start, so I am 100% alternative. Just discovered Shirataki noodles - 0 calories, gluten/soy free, 0 carbs, 0 protein...basically a "nothing" food, BUT it adds bulk so it is filling, making those mid meal cravings much easier to handle. So far I've added it to my lunch time soup and protein/veggie dinner. Try as I might, I can't find a valid reason NOT to use this on IP
To you IP pros - am I missing something or does this seem OK?
IF OK - I just got mine thru a Groupon.com offer...24 variety pack - 6 each of angel hiair, rice, fettuccinni, ziti.

lisa32989 pointed out that IP is an alkaline diet, which prompted me to google konnyaku & alkaline. This is what I found:

Shirataki and Konnyaku are Alkaline Foods.

Many of our modern foods are acid foods. Konnyaku and Shirataki, on the other hand, is a uniquely alkaline food. It is said that modern people had better eat more alkaline food in order to keep healthy. Therefore, Konnyaku is an ideal health food for us.

Shirataki Konnyaku is an ideal food for weight control and prevention of obesity because it is low in calories and has no fat. It also helps maintain our health. It is rich in mineral and full of dietary fibre. Since it is full of fibre, it stimulates excretion and helps us to keep good shapes. And ultimately, it prevents against bowel cancer and haemorrhoids.

Recent studies show that Konnyaku and Shirataki also normalises the level of sugar in the blood and prevents diabetes, normalises the cholesterol level, and prevents high blood pressure.

Would love an alternative POV.

Maple Grove Farms SF Mix would be fine with one change. It is too light on protein so you need to add an egg white (which makes the pancakes fluff up more anyway so - bonus)!

Regarding how to determine if an alternative product is compatible with IP, these are the basic guidelines:

- under 200 calories
- less than 30% calories from fat (multiply calories from fat by 3; if lower than the total calories product is fine)
- 8g or less NET carbs - unrestricted
- 9g-16g net carbs - restricted
- 17g net carbs - super restricted (only twice per week)
- above 17g net carbs is too high to be good for Phase 1
- at least 12-15g protein

If you search AMberjules, she has posted a cute little graphics with these guidelines that manyhave printed and keep in their wallets to check products they find.

Also, for those using IP PACKETS, the crispy cereal makes an AWESOME unrestricted pancake! Crush it really really well (I use a rolling pin on the outside of the packet). Mix w/about 2 oz water, add a tsp of baking powder and let it sit for a few minutes to activate. I sometimes add cinnamon or extracts. I also occasionally add an egg white just to increase the volume and fluffiness.

What do you use in place of bread crumbs or flour, etc. for a good "breading"? I have been using MGF pancake mix. Would that work?

For the most part I don't want to bread anything... That's the kind of eating that i need to learn to do without and on IP have not felt the need. Some have used different crunchy snacks crushed up (southwest cheese puffs, chipotle chips, etc). Some use the IP potato purée (dry) to coat for extra crips knees (rutabaga comes to mind).

Well I don't mean baking in a bad way, I never fry. But I've looked at lots of recipes to make my protein allowance interesting & sometimes it calls for bread crumbs or crackers or Bisquick or flour etc. for a coating. Plain chicken can get old.

Or for instance meatloaf usually uses crackers or bread to add bulk and help the loaf stick together.

Oh, and i dont have any real IP products. I'm doing it all with Alternatives.

I just joined and spoke with a customer service rep. The fee is $29.95. You get 10% off your order, but on the first one it is applied to the fee as a separate transaction. So today, my order totaled $140.41. That was processed and then a second transaction was billed to Paypal for $15.91 ($29.95 fee minus the 10% off my order, $14.04).

She told me that future orders will show the 10% discount at checkout.

I ordered a few items for friends this time. My portion was about $104. This was for 3 weeks worth of products! If I had ordered from Ideal Protein it would have been just over $250! I am so happy I switched to alternatives. This time I ordered the following:

HealthSmart Cereal - Cinnamon (haven't tried yet, but reviews looked good)

HealthSmart Caramel Crunch Bar - reviews said it tastes like $100K bar, which I love! Hope so.

Proti-Thin Vanilla Crispy Treats - I love these. Taste like a rice crispy bar, especially when they get warm.

Proti-Thin Liquid Concentrate - Blue Raspberry (I have tried the grape and it is similar to welch's grape juice, slight protein taste, so I use about 8 oz. water)

Proti-Thin BBQ Soy Snacks (I have tried the Chili Lime and loved them. Hope these are as good)

Proti-Thin Chile Soy Snacks (Ditto, chili lime were sold out)

Protidiet Blueberry pancakes (reviews are good, plus I think you can make muffins with these. I love pancakes so I hope I like these)

Protidiet Peanut Surprise Bar (I loved the other Protidiet bars; strawberry and old fashioned peanut, and peanut butter/smooth caramel crips, so I would bet these are good)

Will post thoughts on these as I try them. Oh, there is currently a 10% discount for Proti-Thin items with code PT10. Not sure how long.

Today I went to Target, the only place I can find the EAS Carb Control Café Caramel flavor, and I saw that they have replaced the tops with screw tops. I was super exited about this, since I like to use the Vanilla in my coffee, and don't consume the entire bottle. My Target had Chocolate Fudge (my favorite flavor) also with the screw top.

I was less excited when I read "New! Great Tasting Formulation!" on the bottles with screw tops. I tried the Chocolate Fudge for my evening snack, ugh, it tastes very different. For those of you who don't like the EAS shakes, maybe you will now. However, I am extremely disappointed. I feel like I need to go to the store and buy out all the old formulation, I like it so much better! I can't quite describe the difference, but it tastes like they added a lot of artificial vanilla flavor to the Chocolate. So disappointed!

Also, the ingredients have changed. Instead of Whey Protein isolate, they are using Pea protein isolate. All other ingredients appear to be the same. The nutritional info is also different. For the chocolate Fudge flavor, the new formula has 100 calories vs. 110, 2.5g fat vs. 3.0g, 2.5g net carbs vs. 3.0g.

What do you think? Is the pea protein substitution going to make this product no longer a good alternative for IP shakes?

I would also love to have the "word" on the changes (re: pea protein). EAS shakes are a staple for me.

Pea protein is fine as long as the profile fits carbs/cals/fat for IP, either restricted or non-restricted.

But if you don't like the product as well (EAS Carb Control reformulation), be sure to express the dislike to the company in a well worded letter AND with your wallet.

They moved to a cheaper protein source. Did the price go down?
