Had a good time in Paragould. We went out to eat taco's and I told my sis don't think one was going to be enough so I ordered a second. They called me to the counter and heard my name again. Low and behold it was a distant cousin and his family. We had a really nice visit. Come to find out that they were staying at the same hotel. I was impressed at how well I was accepted by the uncle I visited so much and his family. He's really feeble now to so that made me a little sad. I'm back home now, and slept really well last night.

Yes, our family does have a lot to be thankful for. And the main one this year is my niece returning home. I think she will be okay once she gets settle in. Wish she didn't have the animals but that's her decision to have them and take care of them.

Hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving day and gave thanks for all the wonderful people and things we have in our lives Hope you didn't eat too much and didn't have too much left over.

Been busy here with painting, booking flights for Christmas, checking on my pension (again) as I have had more mail to tell me that I owed them some money from back in July-Aug. Bah humbug. I don't want a bad file on my account so I paid the amount and will get my act together and see if I can sort out what happened way back then. There are lots of other things I have been doing in the garden and checking on neighbours etc.

Susie - hope you are feeling better now. Probably whatever crud it is you have will clear just in time for you to go back to work. The niece should appreciate the sewing lesson. A great skill to give anyone. We should all do more of it especially now that clothing is either very expensive and well made/ very expensive and made in China and not well made/ cheap and mass produced and you run into someone on every second corner wearing the same top as you. I dug out my machine the other day, but it will need a lot of work to get it going again properly. Haven't used it in years.

Laura - hope the foot has settled down now. Great that you got all the required groceries without the list from the phone. Hope you had a great day. Painting is going okay as long as I do it first thing in the morning as it gets a bit warm from 10:00am onwards and all the rooms I am painting at the moment are on the west side of the house, therefore doesn't take long for the paint to dry and doesn't take long for it to dry on the brush or roller.

Happy = been trying to work out what you mean by a convection oven. Our convection ovens are just normal ovens, not fan forced and you turn the knob to whatever temperature you want and the oven heats up. With convection ovens here, it means that not all the shelves cook at the same time as it might be hotter at the top than the bottom. The fan forced oven can be a convection oven if required, but the fan force heats up quicker, doesn't need all the heat that the non fan does and one can generally set it at a lower temperature. The temperature is the same all over the oven. Anyway whatever you have, I hope the turkey got cooked and tasted good.

Ceejay - Glad to hear that you had a great time with the family. Must be nice to see them all again. Sorry to hear that the uncle is getting very feeble. I guess age catches up with us all eventually. What a surprise to catch up with more family. Hope you had a good visit. I had a laugh at you leaving the clothing behind. Senior moment there I guess.

Samantha fell off a chair yesterday and mess up her ankle. She can barely walk. I will be leaving here to take her to ER as she has babysitting kids and cannot do it alone. Nanna to the rescue. Lord give me peace and sanity or maybe just a bit of sanity.

Well the morning certainly ran away from me. I was checking out some online deals to see if it was worth shopping Cyber Monday. I might make another calendar with DH's pictures but we are having issues with the router and it won't let my computer see DH's. Then because I keep forgetting to do some things - like use my Nu-Step, I downloaded a sticky notes program for my desk top. I did have a bit of issues with it to which DH pronounced it was junk. But I stuck with it and figured it out and it does what I need it to do.

Holiday weekend was good. My turkey came out fabulous. A convection oven Shad is one that circulates hot air all through the oven to cook. You cook at lower temperatures and it cooks about 25% faster. It is a completely different method of cooking. You want to get the air at every available part so instead of the usual trussing up of the turkey, you let it open up in the rack as much as possible so the air hits all the bird. You don't baste the turkey while cooking if you like the crispy skin, otherwise it gets soggy. I did make a flavored/seasoned butter rub and gently poked my hand between the skin and meat and rubbed the butter in. I didn't get a lot of pan drippings but what I did get was very flavorful. We have a thermometer with a probe that you insert in the meat, it has a very long cord so you can close the oven door and the thermostat is magnetic and sits on the outside of the oven. You can set a desired done temperature and it has 2 readings - current temp of the meat and the end setting which will sound an alarm when it comes fully to cooked temperature. I like this because I don't have to keep opening the door (and letting heat out) and cooking to an internal proper temperature rather than eyeballing the browned skin is a much safer method of cooking. It was perfectly cooked - browned and the meat was tender and juicy and flavorful. I had a rather large turkey for the two of us - 18 pounds but I did freeze some also. Friday I used the carcass to make turkey stock and then strained that and make turkey wild rice soup that DH raved about. I also finished off the giblet gravy that I didn't get to complete on Thursday. I was on my feet alot on Thursday and Friday and my foot was complaining so I took it easier on Saturday except I got an emergency call to the Thrift Shop. The Friday cashier screwed up the credit card transactions all afternoon and it didn't properly settle at the end of the night. For some reason she never called us. So Saturday they could not use the credit card machine. I got online with the machine people which was great because the bank had already closed for the day. They helped me get everything right and straight again. Leaving the house messed up my plans to do house things. Saturday night we went to the casino - I did not win the $9,000 grand prize although I had 300 tickets in the raffle bin. I did win $200 in total which was surprising because usually the machines are tight on the weekends. Yesterday I was bound and determined to finally make applesauce from all those apples sitting on my table for a month already. Thank goodness apples keep well. Some of them were starting to dry a bit - it's VERY dry here - but they were fine for applesauce. I made a huge pot with about 6 varieties of apples. It came out delicious. One 8 quart pot of chopped apples reduced down to less than half of that volume. I still have at least that many apples to cut and make more sauce from. I will freeze some and maybe if I have enough to warrant the extra work will can a few jars. I did do a little shopping but mostly got just underwear and some black stretch pants to replace some items that are wearing out. One of my big to dos is to go through my closet and get rid of stuff to make room for the new sweaters I bought. I think if I hang one more thing I 'm going to rip the rack out of the wall and I'll never hear the end of it from DH. I also see that I have 7 winter coats - 2 wool jackets, 2 long down coats, 2 thigh length down coats and one parka. I think if anything goes it will be the long down coats as they are very awkward to get in and out of the car in with them zipped all the way to mid calf. I got them when I first moved here and found they are more practical if you are working and commuting and standing outside and not so great if you are just going in and out of the car. I do have to get aggressive about getting rid of things. Don't feel like, don't even want to consider holiday decorating at this point.

Annie - glad you had a fun time off with the family. That is a real bummer for Samantha. I hope it's just a simple sprain and nothing too complicated. However it will be difficult to try and stay off it and ice as needed. Keep us posted.

Shad - sounds like you have also fallen into the constant busy of retirement. When you are taking care of others that can take an awful lot of the free time. Sounds like your pension is much more complicated than ours. I certainly hope you get more than we do Rule of cats - NEVER let them know you are going to the vet. They ALWAYS know. Hope you found Romeo in time.

Ceejay - glad you had a good time back in Paragould. Isn't it interesting how when you get away from the family (uncles) for a while and then see them again they have aged alot? That's how I feel about my Mum too. Nice that a relative spotted you at the restaurant. Are you glad that you relocated to Missouri? And yes, the senior center was rather quiet when I had to work on Wednesday afternoon. I was very happy about that. I had a few things to keep me busy but was able to easily keep up with things. Thanks for asking.

Laura - hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. I would like to hear more about this "experience thing". Just so that I am in the know. My sister said it was 62 degrees down by you. Oh man what I wouldn't give up for that! Probably not very good for the snifflys though. Did you venture out shopping at all over the weekend?

Susie - looks like you had a great week off. You certainly deserved it. I'll bet you love to get into the holiday stuff. How did Layna's sewing project work out? One of the reasons I added the Sticky Notes app to my desktop was to remind me of getting back on the Nu-Step again so thanks for the reminder to recommit!

Happy - I'm glad your turkey turned out well using the convection feature. It sounded mouth-watering. == I'm glad I'm not the only one with so many winter coats. I can probably get rid of at least one jacket - the one that doesn't cover my rear-end. I never wear it, though it's one of those that zips apart and I do actually wear the inner fleece part of it just as a light jacket.

Ceejay - Glad you had a good trip and got home safely. Always nice to get back home and sleep in your own bed. Sad that the uncle is getting feeble. Like Happy said - you may not have realized it if you were still living near him and seeing him more frequently.

I had a nice Thanksgiving. Food was good. My mother got up after we ate (at my SIL's) and meant to go into the living room. It was dark in there and she fell because she didn't see the step going down into the living room. Thankfully she didn't get hurt or even ache the next day.

Saturday was a lovely sunny mild day & I got outside and dumped all the soil out of the rest of the planters and used it to fill a hole out back left by the crew where one of the trees was removed. I also went to CVS and bought some kleenex 3-packs as it was a good sale and we are about out from the last time we stocked up. My big black Friday shopping, lol. Also put sticky felt on the legs of the two tray tables that didn't already have it. Big productive day. Oh, I also went to Joann's later in the afternoon & bought a pattern & some elastic for my pj pants project. Another good sale.

On Sunday I actually did a BE workout. I log all my at- home workouts and the last one I'd done was the week before I got that crummy virus in mid-October. I also did some laundry and a complete crossword puzzle. And it was another nice day and so I took a walk around the neighborhood.

Today I did another BE workout. Finished a book I was reading. Made a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough. I shaped it into a couple of logs, wrapped it in wax paper and have it chilling in the fridge. Might cut off enough for a few cookies for bf and me & bake them in the toaster oven later.

I took another walk today because it was another lovely day. Strange taking a walk when I'm not headed to or from the train, or without doggy. I started another library book. Bf and I had an early dinner out and that's about it.

One more day off tomorrow. I think I might make my pj pants tomorrow. Or maybe not. We'll see what I feel like doing. I haven't seen bf's mom in so long, we might take her out to lunch. Gonna do another workout for sure, need to get back into the swing of it.

Okay, I'll get this posted. I started a post yesterday and never finished it. Well, not 'til now...

Sunday afternoon I stayed and helped decorate the sanctuary at church. It always turns out beautiful. Today my sis called me while my niece was at the orthodontist and asked if I wanted to go eat lunch at Fazoli's and of course I said yes. They came and got me. My niece spent the week end with her brother so we went by to get the animals. The animals are well behaved. Tomorrow I'm going to work out in the yard. I need to plant some tulip bulbs and mow the back yard. Wednesday I'm going to Branson to take my niece back to the orthodontist and to another stop. She wants to try and get her driver's license back and she picked up an application at a Vet's office.
Right now I'm watching a Christmas show called the Panatonix. It's a group but wow what voices.
My nephew who stayed with me for a while is vacationing in Jamaica with his wife and her family.
I'm having some bursitis in my right shoulder.

Good Morning Ladies...

Good news, Sam's ankle is just a very bad sprain. In an air cast. She is getting around ok, hobbling. She is also icing down the ankle like she is supposed to.

HAPPY...the turkey sounded delish. Glad the convection oven was worth the $$ and all turned out well. Good to know for the commune visit. lol. I have one winter coat. I have several hoodies and that is about it. I have been good about ridding myself of clothes/coats/shoes. I do the "if you haven't worn it in a year" then get rid of it thing. Amazing how that works and I don't miss a thing. Did you get DHs calendar ordered? What a bummer if you don't for DH.

LAURA...Was it a scare when momma fell. I know when my momma fell in her last couple of years, my heart would about burst open from fright of injury for her. Poor thing. Hope she is still feeling ok. We are having mild temps also. Today's high is 60-65, yahoo.

Hi everyone,

Well I was pumped with the stove after the turkey so last night I decided to try and roast a boneless prime rib roast I had in the refrigerator. I did research online and it looked like it would take about an hour and 15 minutes to cook and I had a bunch of things I was trying to get done while DH was out playing in a blackjack tournament. So I put it into the stove about 7pm. Stuck the thermometer in it to get an accurate temp. DH came home early and the meat had just started to roast and was smelling good. The stupid thing took over 3 hours to roast! That's about what it would take in the regular oven. I'm wondering if because it was a dense piece of meat that there was no benefit to the convection cooking. It did come out tasty - DH carved it up and ate several pieces at 10:30 at night! Part of the roast towards the bottom was rather raw - it was an odd spot to not have cooked. I did it on an open rack suspended on a pan so the air should have circulated all around. Anyway it will reheat nicely.

It doesn't appear that the cortisone shot did much this time around. Worked for about 3 days. Now everything feels like it did before I got the shot so that was a bust.

I am working on the papers for the Thrift Shop sales. People are getting really sloppy ringing up sales and making the deposits. I don't have the time or the desire to spend 8 hours looking through every transaction for every day of the month trying to find what people made mistakes on. One cashier that I gave specific instructions to has messed up every single credit card transaction for the last 3 weeks. I had to go in Saturday to fix the mess from Friday and now I see that there are even more messed up transactions during the month. The bank will not be happy to have to fix these and I am not happy to have to find them all.

The apple sauce I made from a variety of apples came out particularly tasty. They said every batch is different so I hope the next batch is just as good.

Annie - poor Sam - a sprain is really hard to deal with. The best thing she can do is keep icing like she is. How long will it take to heal? No, I didn't get the calendar ordered - I was unable to connect to DH's PC to get his photos. He was just here loading some program on my computer but the big sale was yesterday so I missed that. I am also mad because I spent a lot of time entering dates into the calendar as well as pictures from the last 2 year's projects and now it tells me those are discontinued and I have to start all over from scratch again. Always when I make plans for one thing, something else comes and messes it up. I guess it's Cranky Tuesday for Happy today I guess if your winters are much more mild than ours, you don't need a heavy winter coat. 65 degrees - ahhhhh I'd be out dancing in the streets Too bad you have to stay in and work. Hope it's a decent day for you.

Ceejay - sounds like you had a really good time for the holiday. How nice that you helped decorate the sanctuary. I don't have a lot of "Christmas spirit" anymore but I have to say there is something about the reverence of a church that would fill me with the season. I'm sure it's beautiful looking. Are you going to be practicing Christmas carols for playing now?

Laura - that's scary about Momma. Those small steps like that are very dangerous. I am really aware of tripping hazards now. Glad she wasn't injured. Sounds like you are having a nice relaxing time. I think it's a great idea to cut and bake just a few cookies for portion control. I used to do the same thing too except DH just tossed out my toaster oven because he said I didn't use it enough and he needed room on the shelf for his monster sized boxes of Keurig cups. I feel very bad from an ecological point of view that we got those K-cups. I have one cup of coffee a day - he has at least 3. So many plastic cups in the landfill. How nice that you went out and took a walk - just walked the neighborhood? It's good to get out, get a bit of exercise and some fresh air - particularly when being cooped in the office all day. Soon there will be pretty holiday lights to see at night. My sister said with the mild weather that the stores are empty of Christmas lights because more people are taking advantage of the weather to decorate outside.

Shad - I agree with you about sewing and making our own clothes. I have really seen a deterioration in quality of sewing and the fabrics of the clothing for sale today. Especially with places I have purchased from for years and years. The stuff is cheap but the prices are not! Did Romeo get to the vet? I loved your video of the Shepard and the big log on FB - "it's mine, I found it" Have the mossies and heat moved in yet or are you still enjoying the weather for the most part?

We were going to go to the Senior Center for dinner tonight - spaghetti and salad bar but DH said since they are serving the same thing for lunch, let's do lunch instead because the cook on days is excellent and the cook at night is not. So I guess I will go get myself cleaned up and presentable.

Ceejay – This weather has been so mild, nice that you could plant those tulip bulbs this late in the season. Something to look forward to come spring.

Annie – You’re good about getting rid of clothes. I keep things in hopes of having occasion to wear them (again) someplace, or in hopes of them fitting me properly in the future. Or I wear them to death and then they can’t even be donated. Do you ever regret having gotten rid of something? Every once in a while I wonder why I got rid of that blouse or other piece of clothing, but for the most part, I never think about that thing once I’ve gotten rid of it. == Yeh, I was so relieved mom wasn’t hurt in that fall.

Happy – Very interesting about your experience using the convection for the prime rib and it not making much difference in cooking time. I’m sure as you use that feature more, you’ll become educated on what things are most impacted by convection cooking (and those that aren’t). == I hope your 2nd batch of apple sauce comes out as good as the first. == Sorry the cortisone shot didn’t work this time. == How frustrating about the thrift shop credit transactions not being processed correctly. (I’d be surprised if he’s used it more than twice per month.) Every once in a while I think about trying some of the k-cups for tea, but so far have resisted the temptation. I know I probably won’t like them. Plus I really just want to get that giant thing off the counter and into the basement at some point.

My last day of my vacation was sort of crummy. We took our old car in to have the two slow-leaking tires to be repaired (rim leaks, both on driver’s side). Of course it wasn’t just a repair. The one tire was driven on while it was extremely low (I plead guilty!) and that damaged it such that it now needs to be replaced entirely. And two of the rims are very corroded on the inside (that causes the rim leaks to occur). It costs a lot of money to restore the original rims – more than the cost to buy brand new aftermarket ones – so we’ll buy new ones. Always something. I also took the credit card we would use to pay for the tire/rim stuff out of my wallet while we were enroute to the tire place and somehow misplaced it by the time we go to the tire place. Bf got obnoxious and defensive when I asked if I’d given it to him. So we argued. I found it later in the car – it had fallen between the seat and the center console. Sigh.

Nothing much else to report, so I’m going to get this posted and get back to the email.

Made it to my last writing class yesterday. I am going to miss that group of women. The teacher is having 2 classes in January - but it won't be the same people. Yesterday she was trying to keep us on track and we kept veering off talking - the recent slew of sexual harrassment charges, how our men think our world revolves around them ( ) our winter plans and just funny anecdotes as we thought about them. I sort of felt sorry for the teacher a bit but we were having a great conversation. Afterwards I went to the hospital for my annual mammogram. I hate it when your boob sticks to the plate and you have to peel it off and it feels like you left lots of skin there - oh how we suffer! I wonder if men would put up with getting their penis and balleens smashed once a year for science???

Today I have a 1pm Finance Committee meeting for the shelter. I was not able to make the last rescheduled meeting and from what I understand the newest member (the only guy) like me came from a business background and was rather upset that the meeting was so unstructured and loosey goosey. We'll see if they are more on track today. It's at the coffee shop in the grocery store so I will be able to pick up a few things on my way out. Then it's bingo tonight - was really nice having a break with not having to go in last week, even if I do like bingo.

I have a mountain of laundry to do - I'm not sure how I ignored it for so long. Got 2 loads done already and I should be able to sneak in one more today when I get back. I have no more clean bras or pjs. Well I do have 1/3 of a drawer of bras - they are the ones I really don't like. One of them is moulded cups and when I put it in I feel like I have this giant shelf in front of me - even my arms catch on my boobs - I guess that shows you how much I typically sag.

Laura - that's interesting that the K-cup guy regrets his invention. And I can tell you that if you are planning on using the Keurig for tea - you need to get a separate small unit and never, ever NEVER use it for coffee. One you do that, the coffee oils remain no matter how you clean it and your tea / lemonade / cocoa will always have an off taste to it. Same with the soups - I think that idea never really took off. I'm not sure the Keurig gets the water hot enough to properly brew tea anyway. I guess it's good that we use ours every day but I keep thinking I should go back to brewing a pot of coffee although I only drink 1 cup a day and don't like rewarmed coffee. And somehow if you make less than 6 cups it never comes out right.

I smiled when you talk about getting rid of clothing. Yes, I keep far too much because I have some things that I really, really like even though I don't wear them much any more. And I don't want to give them away because I like them. And I have a lot of pretty dress clothes too. I did pare some of them down but I wish there was a worthy cause I could donate them too because out here, they would not get used. Other ladies who recently retired said the same thing. I did take a few things to the thrift shop but jeans and casual clothes sell better. Yikes on the tire expense and dropping the credit card - glad you found it. I have lost a couple of things between the seats like that - it's a really tricky place to find things - there are some crannies that make it really difficult to find with your hands. Glad you thought about looking there. Sounds like your BF is getting old and stubborn like mine STOP BEING AN OLD MAN - little tolerance for some things it seems.

I guess I should gather my papers together and get ready for my meeting.

Happy - Maybe your writing class buddies should meet up at a coffee shop once the classes end. == Ugh, the mammo. I'm nervous to get mine next time - Now that I got the special one that I can't remember the name of, and the extra ones, and the biopsy, I feel like I'll always end up having to go through all that rigamarole every year. == Good luck catching up with Mt. Laundry. == I would never buy a separate Keurig for just tea or some beverage other than coffee. But I agree with the concept. We have coffee makers at work that make a full carafe of coffee. I don't think many people use that machine for coffee. But the machine also has a hot water spigot and I use that to make my tea. We also have pod-type coffeemakers that make individual servings of coffee. They have about 6-8 varieties of coffee to choose from and only two for tea, neither of which I like. And no hot cocoa. Every so often when I don't have my own tea bags available, I make the English Breakfast tea from the pod. (It's not that good, so I also add creamer to it.) I think it doesn't taste good partially because it's brewing and being dispensed through the same system/tubes that the coffee goes through. It can also dispense hot water, but I never use that to make my tea for that reason. It finally occurred to me that the pods are much like tea bags, so I now use the hot water spigot on the other machine to brew tea from the pod (when I'm out of my own tea bags). == Maybe if your sister comes up to visit (by car), she can bring back the dressier clothes you want to donate and drop then at a charity - in a metro area they would likely be more useful to others. == It's very easy for things to fall between car seats and the console, and it's even easy to see them when you look (with a flashlight). But to actually get your hand/fingers in there to retrieve them - that's the impossible part! They actually sell plastic thingies that you can wedge between the seat/console that catch and prevent items from falling all the way down, but we haven't ever purchased them. Maybe we should consider that now...

Bf decided to hold off on the new rims for the old car. We’ll wait until spring. The rust/corrosion on the rims has been ground off and doubt we'll have any trouble for a while.

I did one BE workout last night.

I’ve been watching a lot of “Will & Grace” reruns lately. One channel (Cozi) airs 4 episodes a night. I’ve begun recording them. I thought I’d previously watched a lot of that show when it was still on the air (the first time around), but nope. So I’m enjoying episodes I’ve never seen.

I have my new jeans from Lands’ End in the correct size, but they’re sitting in the basement laundry waiting for me to pre-wash them as recommended. They say to wash them separately because they’ll probably leak a lot of excess dye. I won’t wash them by hand – I don’t even wash my bras by hand, why would I wash jeans by hand?? Anyway, the washer probably won’t work properly with just one pair of jeans in it, so I’ll just wash them with all my other jeans. Any extra dye won’t ruin them, as almost all of them are dark wash anyway (or were to begin with).

I also have to pre-wash the flannel for the pj pants I’m going to sew. I usually ignore that step, but for once I’ll go along with it. Another washer problem, since the flannel is a bright red and cream print, and it’ll probably leak dye too…

I’ve received yet another offer to use my airline miles towards magazine subscriptions. I’m tempted by these offers, but I’ll continue to resist. If I subscribe, I’ll just be bringing more paper into the house that I can’t keep up with. My miles will expire in May of next year unless I earn more miles before then to keep them active. If I don’t do that, I’ll donate my miles to charity.

Forgot to post yesterday. I did get my niece to her appointment but she still has to go to a different place on Monday to be evaluated and she got her new retainer yesterday at the orthodontist. Sis and niece has me in a bit of Christmas
decorating. I got out my tree and plugged it in. I'm not putting decorations on the tree. I just like the lights.
I made soup for dinner tonight. Yum.

Wonder what the people are thinking when they mess up the transactions like that! Sometimes I wonder about the cortisone shots. I know they are not good for you. I'm debating on whether or not I'm going to urgent care with my shoulder. When I forget about it and move it a certain way it ouches a bunch.

Nothing much to report. The weather is still relatively mild here and I’m happy about that.

I made a meatloaf for dinner last night and it was alright. I used oats this time and I think I prefer bread crumbs instead – the texture was so-so. But if we have any bread crumbs sitting in the cabinet, they’re probably old and need to be tossed or fed to the birds/squirrels. Has anyone ever used panko in a meatloaf? I’d say the issue with oats and panko is lack of seasoning, which could be adjusted with some extra seasoning.

My sister is having knee replacement surgery today. Please keep her in your thoughts that all goes well.

I’ll be spending some time with mom this weekend as I believe she needs to do some shopping.
