Slow Burn Revolution

  • Has anyone heard of this book before? I borrowed it from the library and is very interesting. I am going to try it on Friday. You only do 3-6 reps per exercise VERY SLOWLY until muscle failure. You only do this once a week - 30 minutes! Any one done this? If so, did you see results any faster than traditional weightlifting??
  • Isn't this also called SuperSlow?

That new book "Ultimate Fitness" by Gina Kolata mentions SuperSlow - and not in a very good way. Unfortunately I don't have the book - 'twas a library book and I had to return it

Personally, I LOVE my workouts so much - truthfully...if I was only lifting once a week...well what else would I do in the morning? (don't say SLEEP...can't and my kitties won't let me anyway!)
  • There is also the "Power of 10" in the same venue.

I tried this for a bit and it IS a major, major burn. Unfortunately I didn't do it long enough to qualify any results but I plan on going back and trying it again. I really enjoyed this type of training and for me personally, I think it will be a big help once I get to the point of being able to use it effectively.

Plus, you can do it more than once a week if you really feel you must.
  • Boy, I did the workout yesterday and OMG! I am sooo sore today. I had a better workout yesterday for 30 minutes than I have ever had. I think this is the way I am going to lift. You can do it every 5 - 7 days and it works the upper and lower body. The book is called Slow Burn Revolution by some Fredrick guy. He is a personal trainer to the stars. Apparently, the book just came out in December 2002. Thursday night I saw a little segment on the nightly news about this and a woman has been doing it for 6 weeks now and has seen more results in 6 weeks than what she had seen in the last 6 months doing traditional weight training. Very interesting! Thought I would share my experience but I know everyone has there own preference. Have a great weekend!
  • Super Slow
The big burn you feel is lactic acid build-up in your muscles. This isn't really a good thing, and also contributes to soreness rather than actual tissue breakdown. Also, doing super slow, you can't lift the amount of weight that you would if you were moving faster, so less of your muscle fiber bundles are being "fired" (used).

Super slow has been around for years and years- this is nothing new. Do a google search- there are loads of article pro and con. I personally don't like it and don't think it does much for you, but mixing it in as part of your workout for a change of pace could work. For actually building muscle, the general consensus among body builders is that it doesn't work. To build muscle, you have to break down tissue and because you are lifting lighter that you're absolute max and not lifting to failure, you are not breaking down tissue. Again, the soreness is a result of the lactic acid, not tissue breakdown.

As for everything, it comes down to what are your goals. If superslow works for what YOU want and you enjoy it, then do it. Personally, two 30 minute weight sessions / week don't meet my goals, so I don't do it. Besides, I hate lactic acid burn.
