Unhappy Almost time for the pups to fly the coupe

They're almost 8 weeks now. We don't know what to do. I was thinking of giving them away for free since they're not pure breed German Shepherd. The shelter that I got our dog from said they'd take the pups when they were ready.
Would you trust the shelter?

Well puppies tend to go fast at shelters. You could ask them about what would happen if the puppies weren't adopted in a month or 2 or 6?

If they are a high kill shelter, then I'd suggest looking for others to take them if they are a no/low kill shelter, then you could probably trust them.

Good idea, I'll ask about that. Its a small shelter, they're very clean. The cat area is heated and clean, there was a couple of cats that I asked how long they'd been there and how long they would keep them. The guy said a few were there for over a month and since they don't have many of them they generally keep them longer then most shelters. I'm hoping its the same deal for dogs too.
As much as I'd like to avoid shelters, I don't like the idea of giving them away for free, not knowing who would get them and fearing they'd be mistreated. I know, I'm worrying too much. I'd love to keep them all but 8 pups is just too much. We are keeping 1-2 my ds1 became attached to one, he named her Blacky and has to go out twice a day so she doesn't get lonely. Never mind she has 7 siblings to play with LOL.
Mom is my puppy, dh might want his own too, so in all we'll keep 1-2 pups.

Oh and if you do decide to give away the pups... umm talk to the people. Don't list on Craigslist either.

I think it happens a lot here more than other places but medical research companies are notorious for scouring craigslist for 'free puppies'.

"Craigslist," 0h goodness no. Thanks for the tip. I had no clue you could buy, sell, or give away pets on there.

The other thing you could do is talk to a local dog rescue. Tell them your situation and that you'd be happy to keep the pups with you until you find people to take them but if they could help find/screen owners. Some dog rescues will do that.

I second the rescue idea. Our older cattle dog came from the cattle dog rescue and I know they take in dogs that aren't purebreds.

As for cragislist, that's where we got our puppy, Shep He was from a rancher whose stock dogs had a litter, which is fairly common around here. I do not think it's a good idea to advertise them for free should you go that route because researchers scour CL for free animals as Nelie said. While craiglist can be great for rehoming (although you do get backyard breeders and those looking to make money rather than just find a new home for a pet), you just have to me mindful of who is getting the animals.

I think you have a good plan with your shelter.

wish there was a rescue near us....we live in the country side of TX. There was a rescue where we got one of our dogs a while back. The owner was arrested for animal cruelty. The closest now is about 2 hours away.

I would still consider a German Shepard rescue, even if they are far away. Our rescue group travels (sometimes to Texas, Kansas and New Mexico!) to pick up animals. For several puppies they might be inclined to travel to help rehome them

LOL I googled GS rescues in North TX and found one, the guy lives in my town. I left a message telling him that the were GS mix pups. I wouldn't mind keeping them till the rescue eventually found homes for all of them. We'll see if he can help. Thx
