Hi all! Just checking in.
Had first OB visit on Friday - yeah, I'm a wee bit behind schedule on that one. ;) Everything looked good, tho. I didn't ever go in to the Dr. to have the HPT confirmed, so I was just a wee bit paranoid that I've been hallucinating the last six weeks - ha! But no, everything is right on schedule. Heard the heartbeat - that's always so cool. I'm going to have to bring DD to one of my appointments so she can hear. :) Dr. said my uterus felt just a hair large for where we calculated I was (11 weeks 2 days) so we are doing an ultrasound in 10 days (soonest they could fit me in) to double-check the gestational age. Isn't technology amazing? :dizzy: Can they tell boy/girl at 12.5 weeks? Anyway, we have an EDD of 5/3/07 - and I have to pray that the baby either comes several days early or waits an extra day or two (but not more than that - ha!) because DD's spring music concert for school is on 5/3 as well, and I would hate to miss it!! |
Fiona,
So you're measuring large? So was I.... Skeered yet? You're probably not going to find out the sex until past 17 weeks. There are some folks on my twin message board who will get a 70 percent guess at 12 wks but that is on MUCH better machines than most ob's keep in office. To show you how different the quality is, at 12 weeks on my ob's machine the twins were a white blob...at 12 weeks at the perinatologist we saw two babies sucking their thumbs. MUCH clearer...and even on that machine my doctor couldn't tell the sex until 16 weeks. Eli is sick today. I am still wanting to go to church so if DH is going to be lazy and not go he can stay home to play nurse. I keep thinking of that "excuses" song about not going to church when I was a little kid..."and the whole family had to stay home just to blow that poor kid's nose." ;) |
Part of the reason you measuring large for your estimated date could be because you could be going by the possible conception date, and the doctor could be estimating by your period. Since most women do not know the exact conception date-they go 40 weeks from your last period. A pregnancy is actually only 38 weeks-usually conceived around mid-cycle.
Confusing I know-so if you are calculating 11 weeks pregnant-and you are calculating it yourself from the date you believe you conceived your child-then by your period/doctor's calculations that would put you at 13 weeks. If you have your U/S and they tell you are are about 2 weeks further along-then this is why. You did not calculate wrong. That is why due dates are "estimates"-because your conception date could actually be a week off either way... My husband was relocated and onlyhome 2 weekends a month when we conceived Saber-I knew the exact date of conception-so my due date was exact-calculated 38 weeks from conception, and 2 weeks added to that to jive with the rest of the calculations. |
Thanks, aphil - but I know both Dr and I are using last MP for the EDD. If I remember correctly (it was a long time ago!) I think I measured large with DD as well (and she arrived right on time). Either way, if it turns up I am farther along than I calculated, so much the better - less time to wait! :p

Woo hoo - we have pictures! Did the US this afternoon, baby is cooking right on schedule, measuring 12w3d. Next OB visit is first week of November.

I'm glad your baby is right on schedule!
My dr goes by the u/s dates since my cycles are longer than 28 days. I know my conception date as well and u/s date agrees with it. I have an appt this afternoon and will update when I return. Edit: My appt was moved to tomorrow. My OB is at the hospital waiting for a baby to come. The office receptionist apologized so much for having to reschduled. I told her no need to apologize. Babies come on their own schedule, not ours LOL. |
In the first trimester, U/S is very accurate in determining the age of the baby-since the development is mainly of major organs, the heart beating, implanting in the uterus at a certain stage, etc.
It is "after" the first trimester when size starts becoming more different (4-10 pound babies make it pretty much all over the place) so for those who only have a 20 week standard diagnostic u/s and none in the first trimester-it is harder to guage it accurately. |
Here's an update from today's visit.
I had the full exam this time around. It looks like I'm pretty much on the same track as my first pg. I have borderline hypertension already. My GTT came back fine and my blood tests were normal except for the liver and kidney tests (just outside the normal range). The dr is not too concerned yet. She said it was consistent with higher BP and we'll retest around the midpoint of the pg. She didn't bother with the doppler since we were in a room with one of her u/s machines. She did a quick scan and the bean actually looks like a baby now! It has a girl HR of 160...hmmmm. ;) I received my goody diaper bag with all the magazines and freebies. She also gave me an order form to schedule my BIG u/s at 18-20 wks. At first I was thinking, it's way too early to schedule that, but then I realized I'm in the 14th week already and that u/s is just a month away! :dizzy: It seems like I just got my BFP last week. Where does the time go? |
I wouldn't put too much stock in the heart rate...Saber had a higher heart rate, and I pretty much had all of the old wive's tale things pointing to a girl...and he was definitely a boy!!
|
Donna...my boys heartrates were 162 and 173 at 12 weeks. Try to keep from getting your hopes up!

I'll ditto the higher HR. All of mine were well above 150.
|
Oh, I was just saying the girl HR thing with my tongue in my cheek. :) I know it's an old wives tale and I actually don't have a gender preference either way. My dd's was always fast.
|
Also, heart rates are usually very high in the first trimester, and slowly slow down a bit as your pregnancy progresses. The larger the mammal, the slower the heart rate-because there is a larger body to pump blood through. :) As your baby grows in utero, and as a child into an adult-the heart rate slows way down over time.

Hi, not newly pregnant but new to this part of the forum. I'm 6 months pregnant with a girl (due Jan 27). I'm trying not to gain more weight than suggested because of previous back problems. So far, I've been doing pretty good. But the holidays are coming up LOL.
|
Ok, I went for my 22 week ob appt (I go to the peri on the monthly but the ob staggers 2 weeks after that). Anyway, GET THIS...I measured 32 weeks. AGH! I don't know what's weirder...measuring 8 mos with 4 mos to go or realizing I am going to get even bigger. The doctor says after 40 cm I will start growing sideways...that should be interesting.
So when can I use the rascal at walmart??? |
