Sleeping Through

  • How old was your child when S/He started sleeping through the night?

My older son still wakes up sometimes. Robby actually only woke up once last night, at 2:00. He ate, and I put him back down, but he was fussing a lot so I changed him (he was just wet), and put him back down after a quick cuddle. It took a half hour to get him back asleep....well, actually, it was just over a 1/2 hr. total that he was up. That's a good night though!
  • Heck, I still wake up during the night!

If memory serves, sleeping through the night means sleeping six hours at a time. My older daughter started doing it occasionally at around 2 or 3 months old, but not consistently until six months. Linda started doing it from a very young age, so that there was a time I was waking up a lot more often during the night than she was! I honestly can't tell you for certain with either kid, because I think they've always gone through phases. I eventually get to a point where I don't wake up too much when they do, and they usually don't wake up too much either. Bobbie sleeps in her own room now, or at least starts the night there, but she is lately into the habit of waking up around six or so and coming to bed with Linda and I for the next couple of hours.
  • Sara started sleeping through the night at around 20 months. Sometimes I wonder did I do something wrong? or will the kid just sleep through when they are ready? Eli is just 6 weeks old.. he gets up 2-3 times a night.
  • I don't think you did anything wrong. It's very unusual for a baby to sleep completely through the night. Most people sleep 8 hours, and like I said, something like four or six hours at a stretch is considered "through the night" for babies. I think only waking up 2 or 3 times a night at 6 weeks is pretty good. You're feeding him well.
  • I"m getting very excited...Robby ate at 12:30, and stayed asleep until 5 this AM!! I tried to put him off til 6, to keep with my pumping schedule at work, but it didn't work.
  • My oldest was 6 weeks, totally bf, when she started sleeping 8 hours. Don't worry she made up for it later. The next 5 slept 8 hours by 6 mos. The 7th, Rachel, didn't sleep through till over 3. Usually I moved them out of our room once they slept through so she broke our rule. The only way she'd sleep was with us. Till her the rest slept right beside the bed or if I'd fall asleep nursing in our bed. With my 8th and 9th we didn't even have a crib. They both didn't sleep through till about a year when I stopped nursing. My 10th didn't nurse and prefered sleeping by herself. She slept 8 hours around 2 mos I think. Dh would get up to feed her milk I had pumped. He easily slept through her grunting lol.

I have to admit I was the most rested with my 8th. He'd nurse 3 or so times a night but we'd both fall back to sleep easily. He was calm and hapy as long as he was being held.

I just think all babies are different so I don't think you did anything wrong, Dana.

  • We breastfed and co-slept, and after my son turned abou 9 weeks, and was able to nurse side-lying, sleeping through the night became a non-issue. I wouldn't even really wake up.
