South Beach and nursing

  • Hey girls, wondering if you have any thoughts on this.

I was thinking I'd probably be okay starting south beach phase 1, even though I'm still BFing. My baby is 8 months old, and has formula, cereal, baby food, and crackers in addition to breast milk, so I feel like any lack of carbs/nutrients from me has to me easily made up in the other things she eats.

    What do you guys think?

  • I started South Beach when my nursling was just over one year old, and had no problems. She was nursing three or four times a day at that point. I've heard others have supply issues with cutting out the carbs in the first two weeks, though, and I think the official work from Dr. Agaston is that Phase 1 shouldn't be done if you're breastfeeding. Personally, I would jump into the Phase 2 program and do Phase 1 once my baby turned one and I felt more comfortable with solids providing more of her nutritional make-up, but my baby was nursing exclusively until about ten months so our positions are a bit different. Remember that the bulk of Baby's diet in the first year should come from breastmilk (or formula). They don't eat enough solids to get their full nutrition from those sources.

    Hope that helps!

  • I see you posted this in January-- did you decide to try the South Beach? Whatever you are doing it seems to be working!
