January Nursing Mommies!

Here we go, I figured it out....:carrot:
so, Just wondering how many nursing mommies are out there and looking for regular support, a daily or weekly check in.

I have a 6yr old daughter a 3yr old son and a 7 month old daughter who is nursing. I have been eating like a pig over the holidays, but managed to maintain my weight loss:smug:
now it is time to start counting those calories again!
who is with me???

She-Mullett 01-08-2008 05:13 PM

I'm out here! I'm nursing my 5 month old (who tips the scales at 21.5 pounds) and chasing around my 2.5 year old. I'm newly focused and ready to lose weight. I have about 25 pounds to go and would like to do it in the next 6 months.

Ottoette 01-08-2008 07:17 PM

My daughter is 6.5 months too! Born on 6/18, Minnesotaffwife - when did yours arrive?
I gained a bit of weight over the holidays and have 8 more to lose to get back to my low of 2007! :nono:
I work from home 2x a week and pump at work the other 3 days. I also have a 4 year old son.
I have comitted to using thedailyplate.com to log every bite and working through Dr. Phil's book -- all the way through this time! The thread is here, if anybody else is interested.

My darling daughter has reached the distraction age where she pulls off at every little sound. Leaks and sprays everywhere! :D I ordered a nursing necklace today and maybe that will keep her attention.

Kim

minnesotaffwife 01-09-2008 07:23 AM

Ottoette, My youngest was born (evicted by me) on June 4th
she also is distracted by every sound and movement, drives me nutso!
But pretty soon they will nurse on each side for three minutes and be done, so lets keep trucking.
I nursed my 6 year old for her first year and my 3 year old for 13 months (I think boys are harder to ween)
I'd like to lose 10 more lbs by my birthday (march 20th)
but Mcdonalds for dinner last night sure didnt help me with that goal!!!

minnesotaffwife 01-09-2008 07:24 AM

I cant get my weight ticker to change I am really at 155 now :)

tomandkara 01-09-2008 08:13 AM

Hi gals! My little nursling is 19 months now (and she just hit 21 pounds - I must make skim milk to your whole milk, SheMullett!). I also have a six year old and a three year old, though neither of them are still nursing. :) I calorie count on South Beach and do a fair amount of exercise as my weight loss "plan".

Minnesota, have you tried clicking on the link above your tracker to be able to go change it?

Nurse away!

Kara

Leeza155 01-09-2008 05:14 PM

also nursing

I've got two boys - a 2.5yo and a 10mo, and I'm still nursing my youngest. I didn't lose the weight in between the boys, so I put a big push on after I had my second son. I'm down to about 10lbs below where I was when I got pregnant with my second, but have about 15-18 to lose to get back to my pre-1st-pregnancy weight. I did really well with the first 5 months or so, and then lost steam ;)

So, recommitting to getting the weight off - my youngest turns 1 on 3/12, and I'm going to try to get down to 155 for his birthday. That's a little aggressive for me, but an aggressive goal seems like a good place to start.

Off to do my workout dvd :) Nice to meet you all!

Ottoette 01-09-2008 05:31 PM

I just go to User Control Panel and edit signature then where it says 3fatchicks.net/img/bar057/slider-but1/lb/239/175/205/.png I replace the "205" with my latest weight. It's WAY easier than going through the whole ticker creation process.
My baby girl ate a HUGE lunch of solids today - probably 1/4 C of rice cereal and a half of a gerber #1 prunes. She totally wasn't interested in solids until about 2 weeks ago and now she just chows down. She likes her cereal so thick that I'm going to move her to #2 foods. I'll start giving her some of our foods when she can sit on her own steadily.
Maybe it's terrible but after she finished lunch I thought - oh no, I will burn less calories with her eating so much solids and less MM. I can get a little too obsessive about the weight loss!
Kim

wannabeahotmama 01-09-2008 07:00 PM

Hi! I am also nursing my 7 month old daughter, born June 3rd 2007. I can totally relate to the feeding distraction, she has to look at everything in the room every 30 seconds, lol. My prepregnancy weight was 154ish and I gained a lot of weight! But I lost about 20 lbs in the last 6 months and I gained some weight over the holidays but I am back on track and losing. I eat healthier and less than i used to (pigged out while pregnant) and I do The Biggest Loser Dvd almost everyday. Nice to meet you all!
~Heather

minnesotaffwife 01-11-2008 11:25 AM

I tried both ways to change my ticker and it just doesn't seem to save when I do it. Perhaps I will try again later:)
It is so nice to see you all here!!!!!
I don't know how you all find time to exercise, I am spread thin with having all three kids at home. But, that will change on Monday. Veronica, my oldest is going to start 1/2 day kindergarten....we tried homeschooling, we loved it, but I don't have the time to teach her everything she could be learning. I am not closing the door on it forever, but right now I need a break from her fighting with our 3 year old son. I plan to walk her too and from school each day(if it is not below 20 degrees) so that will be a nice short walk and a way to get out in the fresh air every day, but I don't think it will do much for burning calories.

Wannabeahotmomma, too funny that our youngest were born a day apart! I too want to be a Hot Momma! How is the biggest loser DVD? I am afraid to invest money in a video/DVD because I tend to get frustrated with them and quit, I am very uncoordinated and have a hard time following along with them.

Ottoette, I had the same thoughts the other day about the calories and nursing less....LOL

So many June babies! When were the other cuties born?
Have a great day everyone, don't eat that handful of crackers that the kid left behind from lunch! don't do it!!!;):carrot:

She-Mullett 01-11-2008 10:41 PM

Brody was born 8-8-07, 3 weeks early. I had preterm labor from 20 weeks on and the day I got off the terbutaline pills, I had him. Four hours of labor, no time for drugs, sunny side up, and worth every complaint. ;)

Minnesotaffwife-I find time because my kids are in daycare and/or preschool! Every Thursday I take my kids an hour early so I can run to the Y and take my salsa/strength/pilates class for 90 minutes. I also get about one night a week where I can get one to sleep and my husband can watch the other. I also strap Brody in the Ergo carrier and just walk like mad. I figure carrying 22 pounds of bouncing baby boy around counts as strength and cardio! Do you have fitTV channel? I record a few exercise shows a week and fit those in as well. I tivo them and delete them when I'm done. That way it is something new every time.

I'm hoping to lose 20 pounds in the next 6 months. I've got the dreaded class reunion coming up. Although I don't feel the need to "get hot" for it or anything, it gives you a day to shoot for!

These are my bebes.

She-Mullett 01-11-2008 10:42 PM

OK I totally can't figure out the picture thing. i guess they are in my avatar anyway!

minnesotaffwife 01-12-2008 09:26 AM

OH BOY, bad day yesterday....I just cant seem to keep myself accountable...although I really want to be super hot, I really want the food too. UGH!!!
today is another day, right?
Good luck to everyone this weekend

minnesotaffwife 01-12-2008 09:27 AM

She-Mullett....we dont have cable t.V.
right now my hubby works 6 days a week and is also on the fire dept, so when he is home 1/2 the time he is not home.
exercise classes are just a dream to me.

KidsLibrarylady 01-12-2008 09:33 PM

Nursing Mama!

Hello! I have an 11 month old girl that is still nursing and have survived my first week as a SAHM. I am only working one 10 hour day from here on out. I enjoyed my week home much more than I expected! :)

She-Mullet, your name is cracking me up!

Otoette-- good for you for pumping at work. I know from personal experience that pumping that often is the pits!

My daughter is only nursing 3 times a day. Only one of those (before bed) is exclusively nursing, the other two we follow up with a meal (She wasn't gaining enough weight so we spend a lot of time in feeding-mode.) Does anyone have any thoughts on how many additional calories I need to sustain three times a day? She doesn't show any signs of wanting to wean anytime soon. I have noticed that if I restrict my calories too much I don't make enough milk.

Thanks and nice to hear from you all!

fluffybuns25 01-12-2008 10:05 PM

Can I join you ladies? I'm currently nursing my 2 week old lil' munchkin... speaking of him... he's calling me so I'll be back later ;)

KidsLibrarylady 01-12-2008 10:22 PM

2 week old!

fluffybuns--- a 2 week old! I am impressed that you are lucid enough to type-- with additional kiddos as well!! I don't think I had gotten around to brushing my teeth yet when my daughter was 2 weeks old :)

jenhai 01-12-2008 10:47 PM

Hello! I have a 5yo son and my little nursling (boy) is exactly three months old today. I am nursing on demand still. My little guy was born October 12, 2007 and weighed in at 8lbs 14oz. He now is a bit over 13lbs. I actually got down to 219 before figuring out I was pregnant in May. At the end of my pregnancy, I was 236. I got back on the calorie counting and exercising horse on Jan. 3 08. I weighed 225 on that day. And this being the first week, I have lost 4 lbs (as of today). So, pretty happy about that.

I was worried about my breastfeeding appetite and weight loss. But, I think I have found the balance. I am just about in LOVE with those "extra nursing calories" used. It's good to chat with other milk makers. :)

J

minnesotaffwife 01-13-2008 09:12 AM

Kidslibrarylady,
I am almost positive that you can NOT go below 1600 calories. Under that is dangerous and could cause your milk to go bye bye. I try to stick right around there and have pretty good success losing.
Good for you staying at home, I think every mother who can make it work should stay at home. It is a much harder job than any 40 hour out of the house job....but so much more rewarding!
Hope that helps with the calories

minnesotaffwife 01-13-2008 09:13 AM

Jenhai, Welcome!
you are lucky your appetite is not a problem, mine is a struggle every day
have to go to the grocrey store now
everyone have a wonderful day

KidsLibrarylady 01-14-2008 08:31 PM

Thanks Minnesotawife-- that is exactly what I needed to know!

minnesotaffwife 01-15-2008 08:07 AM

Jessica aka fluffybuns :smug:
Welcome to you too, I second what kidslibrarylady said...you are impressive!
I missed your post before, so just wanted to say hello.
hope everyone is having a good week.
I weighed in yesterday and I was 3lbs up:mad:
I guess I need to pay better attention to those little nibbles through the day.
Good luck to you all today

dwnszme 01-15-2008 02:21 PM

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I just found this site yesterday and am so excited to have a support group! I am also nursing, my little guy is 7.5 mos old...he has 2 old brothers, age 3 and 2. I have been "dieting" for almost 2 weeks now and it's going well but I can't seem to fit in time for any excersice. Does anyone know how many additional calories we need to consume since we're bf?

kuhljeanie 01-15-2008 02:32 PM

Hi everyone! Also new here - I've got a boy, 11 mths, and I work full time so I have to pump every day at work. I'm also finishing up my master's, so I have class three nights a week. I still do a dream feed about 10:00 pm just because it gives me a chance to see the little guy on nights I don't get home until 9:30. I try to pump twice at work (my supply is really suffering - I've gone from being able to pump 14-16 ounces at work to barely scraping 7, in six months) but it's so hard I can usually only manage once. Does anyone else have that challenge? Happily it's my last semester before I graduate, but by May he'll probably be mostly weaned.

Trying to lose enough weight to get my blood pressure well into the healthy zone before trying for #2 (late summer or early fall of this year.) I'm doing YOAD, so I'm not weighing myself, but it's a challenge finding the time to exercise!!!

Anyway, nice to meet everyone!

kuhljeanie 01-15-2008 02:36 PM

Oh yeah - almost forgot! I read that you're supposed to add 500-800 calories a day if you're nursing. But I don't know what that means exactly - does it take the same energy to EBF an 8-wk old as it does to supplement a kid who's almost 1? I guess there's a certain bottom threshold of calories just to keep production going in the ducts and working with your endocrin system, and I did read that the longer you BF, the more dense in protein and fat the milk is (the less the baby feeds, the more concentrated the nutrients). Human breastmilk runs between 20-35 calories an ounce, but that's what goes into the baby, not what it takes to produce it. Still don't know particulars around that.

Cheers!

KidsLibrarylady 01-15-2008 08:36 PM

Welcome ladies! I asked a similar question regarding calories and Minnesotamom said to not let your intake go below 1600. I have an 11 month old so that is fine now but I could have eaten a horse when she was younger and nursing-- she's a comfort nurser and could go nonstop. :)

Kudos to you Kuhljeanie for pumping at work still. I gave up around 6 weeks ago or so. I was only getting out 2 ounces a time. The stress of not producing enough was getting to me. I just became a stay at home mom so she pretty much looks at me like an open bar again. :) There are herbs (the one I used made me smell like maple syrup) and at least one medication you can try to up your supply. Check with your lactation consultant. Neither worked for me but I have never been a great milk-maker. We are very close-- I am in Dayton.

KidsLibrarylady 01-15-2008 08:37 PM

Kuhljeanie-- BTW, what is YOAD?

minnesotaffwife 01-16-2008 07:28 AM

We should do a name/home state and how big is your family count just to get things a little more personal....if y'all want to.

You can call me Minnie (short for Minnesota)
I reside in the great state of Minnesota....its frickin cold here
with my Hubby (he is the ff ((fire fighter)) in my name)
We have 3 wonderful children
Daughter 6
Son 3
Daughter 7 months
I have nursed all three exclusively, 12 months for my oldest, 13 months for my middle and still nursing on demand for our little chunk.

If you need to get your milk supply up drinking Mothers Milk tea (made by traditional medicinals) worked for me when I was almost dried up from dehydration my first time around. You have to have to have to drink about 4 or 5 cups of the stuff for a good 3 days before you will notice a difference, then you can start to ween yourself off....but I would maybe keep drinking two a day since you are pumping at work. Just as an added insurance policy.
So fun to have this support. Thanks everyone.
have a wonderful day!!!
Minnie

kuhljeanie 01-16-2008 09:39 AM

Thanks Minnie! I'll try it. I asked my LLL lady and she suggested trying to pump three times a day to get my supply up. If I had that much free time at work, I'd be at home! Tea is a much more workable option. I'm guessing I can find it at Wild Oats or someplace like that. In all likelihood I'm probably dehydrated, since I've had a sinus infection for the last three weeks, and I've been sleeping with my mouth wide open just so I can breathe. (Sexy, I know. :)

Hey Dayton! Glad to hear it! My husband works at Wright Patt, and we're moving up to Kettering this coming summer. He's from there (we're moving into the house he bought from his parents a few years ago.) He went to UD, all his friends are there. I'd be thrilled and delighted to have a friend of my own!!! YOAD is You: On a Diet. It's the Dr. Oz plan and it's been really, really wonderful for me. There's a thread on 3FC if anyone's interested. What is everyone else doing?

My basic information:

Married (almost three months now! :) We live in Cincinnati but like I mentioned, we're moving to Dayton in a few months. I work fulltime as a project manager, and I'm finishing up my MBA in May. Have 1 kid, Ilan, 11 months. Planning to go for #2 later this summer. He was EBF until he was 6 months old and isn't what you would call a fussy eater. That's my kid! :)

I should see if I can figure out how to post pictures.

Cheers ladies!

KidsLibrarylady 01-16-2008 09:47 PM

I am in Dayton, OH, as mentioned. :)
I have one cute daughter, 11 months (she will be a one year old on the 1st, how did that happen??)
I was a full time children's librarian (public library) until the end of the year and now I work one 10 hour day a week and have much less responsibility!
I am back in school taking 4 hours of graduate work and 4 hours of post graduate work to renew my teaching certification. I should be working on that instead of 3FC :)
Married 9.5 years
have 2 dogs and 2 cats, what was I thinking!!??
I am just calorie counting. I have worn something called a caltrac before and lost 54 pounds. I am getting that bad boy out again. I like to watch Mehmet Oz on Oprah. He cracks me up.

Minnie-- it is freezing here as well!! It is tough to be stuck inside all day

Kuhljeanie-- I live around the corner from UD- I have ridden my bike there- and I live where Dayton, Oakwood and Kettering intersect, how weird is that??

That's me in a nutshell :)

tomandkara 01-17-2008 08:01 AM

Hi! I'm Kara, 30 year old wife to Tom and mom to Connor (6), Kadyn (3), and Avery (1).

This is them in front of our "Christmas tree" this year:
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3...a/IMG_4725.jpg

We are currently living in South Korea as my husband is stationed here. The kids and I are leaving soon (three weeks from yesterday) to spend a month back in the States with the extended family before Tom joins us and we head off to his next assignment in Germany. Always an adventure for us!

We homeschool and try to make the most of our many, many living situations. We've been to New Jersey, Washington state, Washington D.C., Texas, and northern California in our eight and a half years of marriage. As my grandmother says, we don't let the grass grow under our feet!

Connor nursed for twenty-one months, Kadyn for sixteen (she weaned herself when I was five months pregnant with Avery), and Avery's still going strong at almost twenty months. She asks to nurse three or four times a day and is only satisfied with her "ennay", which is fine by me. We're kind of naturalist folks - Avery was born, unassisted, at home, and we do the whole organic foods deal.

I basically calorie count on South Beach. I like the focus on homemade meals rich in vegetables and whole grains. I'm trying to lose this last bit of jiggly baby belly! I also love to exercise and hit the gym and the running track about every day, although my efforts would show forth more were it not for my insatiable love of chocolate!

It's nice to "meet" you all!

Kara

kuhljeanie 01-17-2008 09:23 AM

The house we're moving into is right off Far Hills where Kettering starts (just by David cemetary.) Are you close to that? I don't really know Dayton well at all. Are you going to UD? My husband went there and all his friends went too. They're a pretty close-knit little community - he was in a band for a couple of years and there are all these guys that were in the band or used to go to every show. I think it's fantastic that he's got such a solid community - just not sure how I'm going to fit in with them, you know? I'm looking forward to the move, because I know it's going to be a huge stress reliever for him and once the house is remodelled I'm going to love it, but I've got mixed feelings for myself. It's not like I'm moving to the other side of the country, though. (or even the state.) What kind of dogs? We can't wait to get a dog (it'll happen when we move and have a real yard.)

Hi Kara! Does your milk change when you get pregnant? I think I remember reading something about that. We're planning on starting work on #2 late summer/early fall. Don't know if el nino will be still be nursing then, but probably. Your life sounds pretty exciting!!! I used to live in Europe (in another life) and still miss it from time to time.

KidsLibrarylady 01-17-2008 09:57 AM

Hi Kara-- I love your "Christmas tree" your children are beautiful! You certainly don't let the grass grow beneath your feet! I have lived in OH since I was three. My husband may be getting laid off and I am encouraging him to look overseas for jobs, if even for a year. I have four pets though, presents a big problem! You are a woman... organic we do with the baby for sure, at home unassisted birth at home, however, not a chance. I am seriously considering an epidural at 8 months next time around. :) I admire your fortitude!

Kuhljeanie-- I kid you not, you will be about 3 miles from where I am. :) When I was training to walk a half marathon, I would walk up there and through David's cemetery. One of the libraries I work at is just up the street from there and my husband used to live in the apt. complex right next to it. I have a mutt and a soft coated wheaten terrier, you are welcome to either of them. :)

She-Mullett 01-17-2008 03:47 PM

I'm Meredith. I've been married for 2 years to my hubby(who's last name is Mullett, hence the screen name). I have two amazing children. Kate will be 3 in March and is smart, beautiful, polite and absolutely amazing. Not that I'm biased. ;) Brody is my chunky monkey. He is 5 months old and nurses like a piggy. He is calm and laid back and all smiles. He doesn't really dig the bottle, but it is his only option during the day. I pump twice a day for him.

I am a full time Realtor and own a meal preparation business with my mom and another partner. I also teach breastfeeding classes every other month at the hospital and make house calls to new mamas.

I was just going at the weight loss thing at a "try to eat less, exercise more" approach, but I haven't been having the results I want. I dug up the old weight watchers point system to help keep myself accountable. I have been underestimating what I eat. I'm back to the basics and trying to keep up the exercise with the treadmill, Bowflex, and my weekly salsa class.

I've *heard* (didn't actually taste it myself ) that the collostrum starts coming in during the third trimester. I think Kadyn was just at the right time for her to wean. She had been eating solids since she was about seven or eight months - went right to table food as we don't do "baby food" really, just mash up real food so they can gum it down. I am really careful about how we introduce foods, though, as we struggled with several food allergies with Connor when he was a tot.

Where did you live in Europe? I did a semester in London when I was in college. Actually, Tom was on his first tour over here in Korea at the time! I figured he couldn't have all the fun! :D

Thanks for the compliments on the tree and the kiddos! We didn't bring our tree stand and I'm too cheap to buy a new one, and we didn't want to get a fake tree since we really prefer real ones, so we decorated our air conditioner! The kids got a huge kick out of it and we all had a blast. It'll be one of those, "Remember the year we were in Korea and..." memories for sure.

I can see how four pets would make moving overseas difficult! We actually ended up leaving our Lab with my parents because she doesn't care for confined spaces too much and I was worried she might have some sort of traumatic nervous break down on a plane! My parents have a Golden Retriever and the two of them get along splendidly, so all is well. We do miss her, though!

I just don't really care for hospitals, and I get really annoyed at all of their mindless testing and lack of awareness of individuality. It wears me out to constantly be explaining why the baby and I don't need eye creams meant to protect against STDs and monitoring that ties me to a bed where I'm terribly uncomfortable and not laboring effectively. With Connor I was in labor for 25 hours (24 hours at home). Kadyn's labor was 34 hours long (arrived at the hospital 15 minutes before she was born), and I know it was because I was holding myself back, not wanting to go to the hospital. Avery's labor...4 1/2 hours long...all at home, beautifully centered and focused and confident. It was the most amazing and perfect moment of my life. I realize home birth isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I wouldn't do it any other way now.

mommato3boys 01-18-2008 04:46 PM

Hi ladies!! I have a 5 month old nursling. I nursed our 2nd child till he was 14 months and plan on going at least that long with this one. My problem is that he only wants to nurse to sleep. He will not take a binky. He thrusts it out with his tongue. Same if I try to give him some EBM in a bottle. Any suggestions on the binky??

KidsLibrarylady 01-18-2008 11:00 PM

Karen-- my daughter thinks pacifiers are of the devil. :) She would toss them. No thumb sucking either. Pretty much I am the biggest pacifier in the world.

Kara-- seriously, you are a WOMAN. Around the time I told my husband that someone else was going to have to birth this @#$@%$@% baby (not typically how I talk to my husband) and my threatening to throw the bowl I had been puking in across the room, I agreed to consider an epidural. It was not my prettiest moment(s) I had forgotten that I get angry when in pain. Seems like I should have remembered that.

Robsia 01-19-2008 08:52 AM

Just a quickie to say hi as my LO has just decided to wake up.

My DD is 6 weeks old and obviously still exclusively bfing!

I am eating about 1600 cals per day (got that right, yay!) and losing between 1.5 and 2 lb a week, so I'm pretty chuffed. I was 144 pre-pg and just rather piled it on - ended up at 207!

kuhljeanie 01-19-2008 02:43 PM

Hey Kara! I'm glad you had the births you had. I really wanted a natural birth - spent months taking Hypnobirthing classes and practicing, but I ended up needing a c-section after a pretty rough ride. Not what I had wanted but we're all healthy etc, so I shouldn't complain. I bet it was great getting to do the whole thing at home! I spent as long there as I could - was almost 8 cm when we showed up at the hospital. Alas...:)

For those with two, has it been your experience that the second one is noticeably easier than the first? My husband's face gets kind of white when we talk about the next one. The first one was really hard on him (maybe even harder than it was on me, because I didn't have to watch it happening. KWIM?)

Hi Robsia! That's TREMENDOUS! I wish my starting weight had been healthier, but I've been heavy my whole life. I managed to get up to about 247 right before I delivered. You're doing amazing!
