Hi, recently my gyno ran some tests because I was having alot of symptoms of pcos/insulin resistance and according to my numbers and symptoms she believes I have both of them ( and maybe even diabetes ), well I am new to all of this and of course I am worried ... she wants me to see an endo and the soonest I can get in to see any of them around here is NOVEMBER !! My question is what ( if anything ) should I be doing in the mean time to help myself with these things? I have been doing WW and not really watching carbs but my gyno said that I should be eating low carb ( not low, but lower )...do any of you have information that might be helpful to me while I wait two years for my appt? I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Carri
Hello, Well the best advise i can give is to make sure that you eat a protien with your carbs and lower them as to what is realistic for you. For example, i CAN NOT live without my carbs, so i have just cut out bread with every meal, no obvious sweets, etc. But when i have a baked potato with dinner, i make sure i have chicken with it. Dont ever eat JUST a carb...always pair with a protien. Ask your doc about Byetta....best thing that ever happened to me. Some people cant tolerate it because they get nauseated, but if you are like me, you will just feel full longer and not crave much of anything. It is specifically for PCOS/IR and diabetes type 2.
Oh, and exercise, boy does that make a difference with you insulin, sugar, and metabolism. We have to work much harder to get our metabolism up, so be sure to do some sort of exercise every day.
Hope that helps.
Thanks Stacy, she gave me a number that I didnt understand, after I did the glucose tolerance test ( high sugar orange drink ) she said that I had a number of 300 when I was supposed to be between 5-55 - do you know what number this represents? Glucose?
Sorry, this is all new to me ...
I guess I should start cutting out the sweets now huh? I could occasionally have them I guess ... well I guess I will have to wait and see what the endo says ...
What I do to lower my carbs is pretty simple. No refined sugar and nothing white. I basically only eat 'good' carbs. Wheat bread instead of white, and the sugar free version of everything! I do occasionally treat myself to something with potatoes but like Stacy I always eat a protein with it. Wheat pasta is wonderful, brown rice is ok as long as you mix it in with something flavourful as it is very bland on it's own...it is all doable.
Thanks both of you the information is helpful, I figure if I can start cutting some of my carbs now then it will not be such a shock to my body when they advise me to do it ... I hoping not to have to go on meds but I guess that will be up to the doctor.
Carri, WOW, hopefully she was not talking about your insulin being that high. BUt those are the ranges of insulin, the 5-55, i think. Mine was 66. Maybe she was talking about insulin but gave you a reading of your blood sugar, which would still be high but i not AS out of range as if it were insulin. Does that make sense? You might want to call your OB real quick, just leave a message for the nurse and ask that question, then she will have your file and be able to help you out pretty quickly.
Yeah, i would definately cut out the sweet stuff. I worked for a nephrology group and you dont want to know what diabetes does to the kidneys. Really opened my eyes and got me serious quickly.
Good rule of thumb, like sarah said, when wheat is available choose it. But no matter what, in my book, if i have a carb, i have a protien.
You can occasionally have sweets but i make it a super rare treat and even then i opt for healthier sweets. Like if we had a special dinner occasion or something and a dessert seems fitting, i make a sugar-free pudding pie or i grill peaches on the grill. Lots of healthy options now days for sweet stuff. Get yourself a diabetic cookbook and you will be amazed at your choices. And once you cut the sweets out, believe me, you wont crave them anymore. They just dont have the hold on me they used to. So no more glazed donuts but if for some reason, you HAVE to have one, then make sure it is just after a meal that you had a lot of protien in. NEVER eat pure sweets on an empty stomach, reeks havoc on your system.
I know she wasnt talking about my blood sugar because that was only 148
although the other day I checked it with my Dad ( he is diabetic ) and it was at 179 about 2 1/2 hours after I ate, so I don't know if that is good ...yes I double checked with her and she said that it was 300 when it was supposed to be between 5-55, so yes that does scare me - especially since I cannot get into the endo until November ... I haven't felt well for a while now ...
