Default Questions on Insulin resistance????

I am 27 I have Hypothyroidisim I take Synthroid, and I am having allot of problems maintaing my weight. I have an aunt who is only a couple of years older than I am and she was diagnosed with PCOS in her later teens, and about 2 years back with IR(she also has Hypothyroidism) she thinks that I have the same issuses as she does.

I have the skin tags, I have the weight gain, I have the irregular menstral cycle, I have the dry skin, my chloesterol is 232 and I have a rather healthy diet, I am starting the SBD to try to lose some of the weight I have gained in the past year (58lbs)

Anyways, my dr has tested me for PCOS and says that I might be boarderline so she is testing me again, but told me not to worry about IR, which is funny since I have a LOOOONNNNGGG line of Diabetes (type 1 & 2) in my family on all sides, (my mom is type 1) She said since I didn't have a problem with either of my pregnancies she thinks I am fine.

I am not sure of the tests I need done to determine if I am IR my aunt only found out on accident when she was trying to conceive she was put on Glucophage (sp) and it worked YEAH!!! within 1 month she was preggos. But if anyone could provide any info I would love it.

Thanks in advance.

I never suspected PCOS, but I was IR, and hypothyroid. I am now a full blown diabetic. My advice is to research IR and the connection with diabetes, then find a good diet that will help lessen the IR and stick with it! I did for five or more years, and then slipped up for six months and in that time my IR got so bad my pancreas could not keep up anymore. Will your doctor prescribe Glucophage for you, and see if it helps you? Many folks find it helps them lose weight.

Was it an endo that was doing these tests? I have never found a doctor other than an endo that would bother with an IR test. Even if you are just a 'little bit IR' it can mean health complications later on in life if you don't take good care of yourself now.

Did she draw hormone profiles? The thing about PCOS is it is a syndrome - all or only some of the symptoms may be present. The wacky hormones are also a good indicator.
