Default Share what you've learned w/ newbie

Good morning!

I was just dx yesterday with PCOS. I am going to be starting Metformin and taking progesterone to force a bleed.

I would like to hear any good advice on coping mechanisms and tips you might have.

I guess Metformin can cause a lot of digestive problems? My office is on the third floor with no bathroom or elevator. The nearest bathroom is a good 40-50 seconds away.

Am I going to be in trouble?

I'm also starting the South Beach Diet and, while eggs are OK some of the time, I don't like them for breakfast everyday.

Anyone have any good recipes they want to share? I've been going the 'whole foods' route but am new to the low carb thing.

Thanks!

Violet

Welcome, Violet!!

We're glad to have you here!!

The first week I was on Met I had a few gastrointestional problems, but after my body adjusted, I was fine. This doesn't happen with everyone, though, so I can't tell you 100% it will work for you the same way it did for me.

My advice regarding the Metformin is: Take it with your biggest meals of the day. I take 500 mgs. 2x a day, and I take it with my biggest meals. Another thing I do is I take it right in the middle of the meal. This way I already have some food in my stomach for it to blend with and it puts the pill right in the middle of all of the food you will eat. I learned my lesson early to not take Metformin when I was just eating a snack.

The best advice I can give you on PCOS is to NEVER give up on yourself & don't let any doctors/any one tell you "It's all in your head." Do whatever it takes for you to get healthy and happy, both physically and mentally/emotionally. You might hit some bumps along the way, but that's ok. Just drive over them.

As far as recipies, I don't cook much if at all so I really don't have any good ones but here is a link to our low fat recipies:

Here is another link for just South Beach recipies:

Hope this helps!! Feel free to join us in the monthly chat!! We'd love to have ya!

Hi, Violet! I can't address the Met question as I'm not on that, but I have had good results with a low-fat diet that's close to the "Low-G.I." concept. It's not low-carb, more like low sugar and low fat. I also count calories, keep a food journal, and exercise a lot. It has taken me a couple of years to get this far, but I think persistence over the long haul is the key to keeping the weight off, especially if you have PCOS.
