August 2011 PCOS Support Thread
The old July 2011 support thread is here. The old July exercise thread is here.
Wahoo! New month! Let's round up! And don't forget to exercise in August and add your minutes! :carrot:

Who's here this month?
Me! Astrophe rhymes with catastrophe. Though I'm not catastrophic. :D How are you? Mostly good. Emotionally happy, mentally solid, physically reasonably well, and spiritually calm. What are you working on? Emotionally -- continuing stress relief techniques. (Help mom with dad's caregiving and we are still pursuing an alzheimer dx so that can get stressy.) Mentally -- making it to the start of the school year with a lively child. SAHM summers are the busy time! Physically -- dealing with my PCOS and trying to lose weight. Spiritually -- strangely as it sounds, spending more time in my garden. I need that to feel connected and at peace. How was last month? Not too bad -- I finally seem to have found my "sweet spot" for weight loss and things are moving again so that is encouraging. I am changing health insurance though so waiting to sort that out before moving on to allergist and endoc appts that I need to do. How's your PCOS management going? I took a BCP break but may go back on. 90 something days with no TOM was my limit, and it isn't appearing so back I go. I don't want to deal with the moodiness. I had some RAGEY moments and frankly, I don't need it. I feel more even on BCP than relying on my own hormone wacky. Still taking my Levoxyl for the hypothyroid, not bothering with the spironolactone at the moment -- the hair doesn't bother me as much as the ragey bits of the emotional roller coaster. Here's to a good August! :) A. |
Who's here this month?
Mee!!!!! How are you? Im ecstatic this AM. I hit 259.9 on the scale which means I am halfway to goal!! What are you working on? Continuing my weight loss. How was last month? Great I lost 12 lbs about last month How's your PCOS management going? It's going pretty ok. I think the hormones are straightening out a bit which is good. I keep waiting for TOM to be regular and it isn't so hoping that starts on it's own soon. I refuse to take BC. |
Who's here this month?
Me me me!! How are you? Doing fairly well, food is on track, exercise is on track. What are you working on? Well, healthy eating and exercising as usual. I have some breast lumps so I'm getting my (pre age 40) mammogram. My doc doesn't seem too concerned but we've both felt them so it is a good thing to do. How was last month? Fairly good. Weight is the same but same is ok with me since there were some ups and downs. How's your PCOS management going? I really need to switch my BCP as I think my experiment with Ortho Tricyclen isn't working. My doc gave me a recommendation for a new gyn so I'm going there in a couple months for my annual checkup. |
Who's here this month?
-I am here and ready for my first full month as an official PCOSer. How are you? -Better than I expected. I think I went through my mourning process long before my diagnosis because I've suspected it for so long. I have my moments of sadness and feeling abnormal, but I shake it off. The support from my husband is absolutely priceless and he makes me believe that, no matter what, everything is going to be OK. What are you working on? -I need to get back on my diet plan. I have been maintaining for far too long because of a few other health issues I've been using as an excuse, but it's time... Especially knowing the impact weight loss can have on PCOS. How was last month? -Dealing with the unrelated heath things has been difficult. One (stomach problems) is better, the other (spontaneous bruising and leg pain) is still a mystery. I am frustrated. Being diagnosed with PCOS was actually good for me because I've started the process of seeking help instead of just hoping and wondering. How's your PCOS management going? -There isn't much to it yet. I finished my Provera on Friday so now I'm just waiting. I'm anxious about whether or not it will work... Sometimes I fear I'm just too far gone. I have the birth control waiting, but that concerns me a bit because it's Ortho Tri-Cyclen and I have read others' experiences with it. Thank you, Atrophe, for your post in the last thread and the link to the BCP thread. I am so new to this and have never been on BC before, so I don't totally understand what all the words mean, but I am learning. I appreciate your support!! |
Beth, check your vit B12 levels. I too used to have spontaneous bruising and leg pain. Turned out that I was severely deficient in B12 and D. The doc gave me a shot for the B12 and the bruising & pain stopped overnight.

Who's here this month?
ME! And hopefully longer and a more frequent poster too. How are you? I'm exhausted. I'm tired of traveling. I've already had to deal with a crisis this morning that has me on my last nerve, and I'm about to travel again tomorrow. But, overall, I'm doing GREAT. I am relatively healthy, I have a good life, I have a job, and I have people who love me. What are you working on? Well, now that the month is starting, my goal is to be eating low-carb and exercising my little butt off. I have this one trip and then I am back to "normal" and I will be focusing on eating healthy, experimenting with new recipes, working on my things, and rest from all the travel I've been doing. But mostly, for this board, on my eating, my calorie counting, my exercising and of course, losing weight! How was last month? Good, I guess, despite all the travel. I still have 3 extra pounds that I've packed on that I need to take off. I am working on it. Thankfully, I didn't do too much damage, but I definitely could have. I got my period early, which is weird, as you all know, it was a perfect 28 day cycle, and I don't know if that was because of the extreme low carb, eliminating as much wheat from my diet or what. I'll be playing around with that too this month to see what I discover. How's your PCOS management going? Good. Despite being exhausted and tired and traveling, I've been taking my vitamins and supplements diligently, even if it's at 2 AM. I figured it's the least I can do, even if I can't exercise or do anything else. The early period I think is a good sign, as long as I don't start having it all the time. I'll see how it goes this month. I know I also have to work on the stress levels because as I've already noticed, the more I stress out the more I want to eat. |

Doc is on vacation this week, but I'll ask her about it next week. I think I'll pick up some OTC B12 supplements to try while I wait, I'm to the point where I'll try anything!! |
looking GREAT ems18!
|
Some doctors discourage you from getting your B12 levels checked because most Americans get plenty of B12 through their diets. However there is some connection between PCOS, diabetes & B12 deficiency. They say that metformin causes malabsorption of B12, however I never took metformin and was still deficient. There are some pharmacies that will give you a B12 shot without a prescription for about $20. However you will need a prescription for high-dose VitD supplements.

You look awesome, ems!! Congrats on your success so far!

checking in -- ok, switch gears to damage control! Took car into shop, waited forever, got all hungry and blood sugar low, had a soda without realizing how much sugar is in a mountain dew throwback (44 g sugar!) and that led to a headache... I'm going to go over carbs since there's still the whole rest of the day to go. I'm just hoping to keep it at maintain today.
ETA: Managed to reel it back... but def. not going into car places any more without bringing a snack of my own! Lesson learned. A. |

Light bleeding has started!! Yay, seems the Provera worked. Most women would call me crazy for being excited over getting my period, but it has been 18 months!!
Also, I am on day 3 of taking B12, and while it's too soon to know for sure if it's helping, I am in the least amount of pain I've been in for a month, and while I still have the bruises I already had, no new ones have shown up so far. I'm hoping it keeps getting better!! I hope everyone else is having a good day. :) |
I'm gonna whine for a sec...
August got derailed off the bat! I spent Sunday night into Monday in the hospital. I am currently on bedrest. Grrr. I go to doctor today and hopefully will be released and can at least be active even if I can't work out yet. I have eaten okay considering but I am doubling down efforts starting today and going with fewer than 20 carbs per day since i wasnt seeing results with 50 or less. Good luck to everyone! |
why were u in hospital? x
|
I went because of abdominal pain. They thought it was my appendix. It wasn't. Cysts, maybe a ruptured one and an infection. They aren't 100% sure what was going on but both ovaries were packed with cysts. I'm used to cysts but apparently this is pretty bad. I will, hopefully, know more later today!

Who's here this month?
Me! I'm new so hope it's ok to join you all? How are you? Feeling positive at the moment. I've been putting off dieting becasue my head wasn't in the right place but I feel like I'm in the zome at the moment:) What are you working on? Meeting my first mini goal of 7lbs off by the time my eldest son goes back to school on the 5th of September. How was last month? Well, I wasn't dieting last month and in truth I felt very down about myself and my weight etc How's your PCOS management going? I hope that by getting my weight management under control I will be able to get my PCOS more under control. My PCOS is heavily linked with my weight (excuse the pun!) |
* Who's here this month?
I am! Just back from vacation (well, I've been back for couple of weeks but didn't get back to 3fc till today :P) * How are you? I'm feeling good about this month & inspired after some time off. * What are you working on? Weight loss & pcos management. Getting back on track with exercise & diet. * How was last month? Was ok, didn't go much off track during vacation. I actually did pretty good considering that I had no option but to eat off the hotel menus. Breakfast was mostly fruits and some protein, lunch is usually a salad and dinner soup. I did some yoga, swam a lot and did a lot of walking. * How's your PCOS management going? Since going off Actos I noticed that my cycles are longer now, around 30-32 days vs 28 days when on Actos. My periods are longer too, were usually 5-6 days and now almost 8 days. I'm not worried because at least I am getting my periods! Facial hair is becoming a problem ever since I went off bcps, I've been threading for a while but I'm considering getting laser done since I've done it before and showed some good results. |
Nest, sorry for your recent health problems and hospital visit, I hope you're feeling better!
-- My period continues; it hasn't been heavy, but I had light bleeding most of Thursday. I don't think I had ever experienced cramps before -- how do the normal chicks handle this once a month?! lol. It's great and horrible all at once, but I am just really glad the Provera worked so I can go from here. Leg symptoms seem to be better every day I take B12 which is a relief; almost no pain today!! I just hope it isn't a coincidence so I can finally get better after 6 months!! |
sorry to hear that it soundsnasty are they goingtoremovethem? x
|
JustSharing83 -- Glad the provera worked! Sometimes if not for a long time the first one back can be rough. Hang in there!
nest -- Wow! Hope youa re doing better! Pickle27 -- :welcome2: Glad you joined and are feeling positive! JigglyBits -- Welcome back from vacation! My Check In: Doing ok this week -- tried some new recipes and I think I've nailed -1 lb for the week. I change ticker on Sundays so I'm waiting to make it "official" but I've already been seeing it onthe scale. A. |
Thanks for the welcome :) I had a sneaky step on the scales this morning to help keep me on track before going to my best friend's son's birthday party as I knew I'd be picking at lots of party food if I wasn't careful. My official weigh in day isn't until Monday but it looks like I've lost 2.5lbs so far this week :D:D And needless to say, I didn't pick at the food as I didn't want to undo what I've done this week :)
Well done Astrophe on your loss this week. Justsharing83, I always get terrible period pains if I have gone a long time without a period. It's like my body is having a gool old clear out. Hopefully next time things won't be so bad. |
well done on the loss astrophe xxx

Hello all and welcome newbies!
I'm back from all my travels, this time for real. I guess I've always been back for real, but I would leave again. For now, I don't have any plane tickets purchased and no car trips planned. ..... which means I can actually focus on eating well and going back down. I'm up 170.4 lbs as of this morning and I blame the Chinese food I ate. It was a last treat before the nose to the grindstone, since I never eat Chinese, mostly because I blow up like a blimp when I do. So, this was my once a year treat. I'll be changing my profile shortly to reflect it... so sad.... Anyway, that just means I have to be careful and more vigilant with my food selections from now on and I just have to get back on track. It's so hard for me to eat healthy when I travel because I'm thrown in such weird situations (meetings all day and stuff) and I don't get enough sleep, which usually means I eat to compensate the lack of sleep, which triggers stress hormones, which makes my body hold on to water and then later weight as much as possible. Or, like the horrible breakfast served at one of the hotels I stayed at, there was no protein for miles available... making my food choices carb heavy!!!! I'm just glad to be back. And glad to be back to exercising too... |
2nd month in a row I got TOM which means no loss so far this week. Typically a woman loses the water weight in the first 1-2 days of TOM so ......since today was the first day I am hoping it will be gone by morning weigh in. *fingers crossed*
|
So I'm sorta feeling better. Losing weight even though I haven't been on plan with everything and sometimes some crackers or pretzels are the only things that will calm my belly down :( oh well. It's not the end of the world.
|
Just a quick check-in -- I'm all stressy and anxious. I'm trying not to eat crazy food just because of that but seriously... very stressy. If I can make it to Tuesday, I'll feel a lot better.
A. |
Rana, I totally hear you about the Chinese food.
I went to a chinese buffett for lunch on saturday and I thought I was being good by staying away from the carby stuff. I filled up my plate with clams, peel-n-eat shrimp, mussells, softshell crabs, etc. I was still up 4lbs on sunday :( I was down to 160 this morning, and I ate a banana for breakfast.. been peeing like crazy ever since. I am hoping that it is just water weight and I will be back down to 158 or less before my WW weigh-in on Wednesday. |
One thing I think most people forget is you can definitely get a ~5lb fluctuation based simply on water/waste in your system. Don't get discouraged :)

That is true. However when you lose weight at a snail's pace, it is very hard not to get discouraged when your weight jumps 4-5lbs overnight. |
