Default Question re: Carbs

I know to keep carbs at 40% or below, but how many actual grams is too much?

Today I had 47 grams of carbs, which equated to 14.8% of my overall nutrition. (Of course, the huge negative was that 63.78% of my overall was fat. *barf*) Is that too low? I will be starting Metformin, so I'm concerned about going too low on my carbs.

Can anyone give me and idea of how many grams they aim to stay under a day?

Also, I'm trying to do a low-calorie (ish... staying under 1400) and low-carb lifestyle. Is that possible? My calorie goal is based on my activity level and weight, so I'm terrified of going above it. At the same time, I know carb control is more important right now. My doctor recommended focusing on low carb but keeping an eye on the fats, too.

I am actually diabetic so it may be different for you. I take metformin and januvia.

I eat about 15 - 20 carbs per meal and typically a 15 carb snack in the evening. I try to distribute the carbs throughout the day to avoid spikes and lows. I haven't had much trouble with blood sugar control or lows. Also, not all carbs are equal in terms of how the make your bs react. I do well with baked potatoes and poor with rice or bread. Some people are the opposite. I hope that this helps.

My primary doc recently told me aim for 1500 cal and 100 carb. I'm PCOS/IR but the IR is already under control. I'm also hypothyroid and Metabolic Syndrome.

100 x 4 = 400 carb calories. Which means 26%. I'm not totally cool with that... too big of a change.

So I am aiming for 150 g first which is 40% carb. A week later I'm 2 lbs lower. While still not at a solid 150 g carb average, I see things are moving again. So I'm thinking 150 g at 1500 cal will be ok for now.

I don't know if my experience helps you any.

Thanks ladies. I'm starting to get really nervous about the Metformin. Perhaps I shouldn't reduce my carbs too low until I know how I'll respond?

It really helps to see how many grams you ladies consume and how it's broken up.
