Getting well enough to get back to excercise!

Changing meds/diet around after lab results -- I go back for 2nd round of bloodwork. I have elevated liver enzymes and they want me to come back for another blood lab before my endoc appt. So who knows what it will be. (??)

How are you?Fine Thanks! :) Feeling motivated to take better care of myself! So I've just joined this group and I am looking fwd to getting to know you all.

What are you working on?Just working on losing the extra 15lbs I gained the past MONTH! :(

How was last month? Self Destructive! Mindless emotional eating and generally not being very nice to myself, hence the 15lb gain! :(

How's your PCOS management going? Have restarted on the glucophage (850 mg x3) dilligently and have begun taking Spironolactone.

Hoping to turn things around and as a result, I hope to make peace with myself!

ems81wales 05-02-2011 04:26 PM

noussa i know how u feel about the emotional eating thin as i do that also thats how i gained my weight and it is so hard to get it off after you easily put it on. Good luck x

noussa 05-02-2011 04:55 PM

Thanks Ems! How do u manage to quiet that self-sabotaging voice that encourages you to eat loads of chocolate, chips by the bag and to skip the gym?

ems81wales 05-02-2011 05:30 PM

you just got to think to your self you dont wanna be this weight anymore and that u want to get it off and once you start going it gets better and i eat loads of fruit and veg instead of choc and crisp. I do have my treats everyweek but i try to go for low fat stuff but i always have a chinese as i love them hehe xxx

Violet73 05-04-2011 11:42 PM

Trying to get into a size 16 before my niece's graduation at the end of the month (old b/f will be there ;) with his son graduating )

End of school year stuff with my daughter. Mother's Day weekend this weekend with my mom :)

How was last month?
Great :) I found out that combo cinnamon and chromium pills work great for me :) Lost five pounds this week :D

How's your PCOS management going?
Pretty good....

Rana 05-05-2011 12:58 PM

How are you?

Tired. I think I'm fighting off another cold. Lots on my plate right now. I haven't had a chance to check in here for a while because I've been so busy....

What are you working on?

Right now, getting back to plan and exercise. Thankfully some of my healthy habits are ingrained now so, even being off plan doesn't mean I was entirely off plan. I still stuck with what I know that works even if I indulged.

But, back to the grindstone, since I do have another endoc appointment next week.

How was last month?

It had some good points, but it was generally horrible, with lots of sickness and travel problems and house problems. The month was just generally horrible. I know people had it worse than I did, so I can't wallow in too much self-pity, but I was definitely looking forward to MAY.... YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How's your PCOS management going?
Good. I've been taking my supplements, exercising as much as I can, eating as well (minus those indulgences) and I should be getting my period in the next few days.

JustSharing83 05-06-2011 01:54 PM

I am nervous, ladies. I finally talked to my doctor about suspecting I may have PCOS. I went to the doctor because I've been having spontaneous bruising on my lower legs for the last few months. She thinks it may be caused by the thyroid, and when she asked if I was on birth control, that opened the conversation up for my concerns. I will get my blood work results Monday when I am also having my first pelvic exam, which I am terribly uncomfortable just thinking about. She also mentioned an ultra sound to see what's going on with my ovaries.

I'm glad to be getting some answers, but I'm scared of what those answers may be. I guess I just needed to talk about it a little and this seemed like a good place, so thanks for reading! :)

-Update- I got a call from the clinic saying that my blood results are in and my thyroid and blood sugar are fine. So now my bruising is more of a mystery. I'll learn more at my appointment on Monday.

Rana 05-09-2011 10:35 AM

Hi ladies!

I'm finally sleeping at home, after so many things happening in the last few weeks (travel, broken fridge, etc.) and I can finally weigh myself in my scale.

My scale read: 164.2!

Woohoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite the traveling and lack of fridge, I haven't gained weight!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, for you all that have been following my story, I know it seems like maybe I'm getting overly excited because I tend to eat healthy and exercise lots.... but this PCOS thing is a b*tch and I get super excited when I actually lose weight!!!!!!!!!!!

DinaAS 05-09-2011 04:48 PM

I am a victim of PCOS and endometriosis, I am also new to this Site. I have been exercising and taking supplements that have and a amazing return . I am losing a consistent 2.5 to 4 lbs a week. I was on Metformin for a while for the PCOS but that really didn't help. I had my tubes tied in 04 and gaine a ton of weight after that, all teh doctors told me that it was all in my head.

JustSharing83 05-09-2011 05:14 PM

I went back to the doctor today for my pelvic exam, which wasn't nearly as scary as I had anticipated, but I have a really sweet doctor. She said all of my blood-work came back as normal, including my "female hormones" but PCOS wouldn't show up, so I go for an ultrasound on Wednesday. My doctor thinks I will be able to get pregnant eventually, so I'm staying optimistic!

ems81wales 05-09-2011 05:20 PM

lost 2.5lbs this week :D nearly in the 150's woohoo

JustSharing83 05-12-2011 02:16 AM

I had my ultrasound on my ovaries and after I left for work, the doctors' office called and left a message on my answering machine saying everything looked "great". I'm pretty confused, to be honest. So, as I said, my female hormones, thyroid, and blood sugar were all normal and apparently my ovaries didn't show cysts...? But still...

I don't menstruate.
I have excess facial hair.
I am obese; my weight came on fast when I was about to hit puberty. It is concentrated in the upper body.
I have a lot of abdominal discomfort and sex can be painful.
I have darker patches of skin in the usual areas.
I have an almost constant flow if clear discharge, which I've only seen on one symptom list for PCOS, but it definitely clicked for me if it is a symptom.

I certainly wouldn't mind a response. Are there ladies out there who can relate to my specific situation? I'm scared and feeling very alone and lost.

I'm sorry hun  From my understanding, you can have all the symptoms of PCOS without actually having the cysts on the ovaries and it is still PCOS. I hope someone with more knowledge than me will chime in here and explain it better.

Rana 05-12-2011 09:10 AM

I should bump the thread that Astrophe posted earlier this year, because there are different types of PCOS patients.

It sounds like you need a new doctor, Beth. Have you seen a reproductive endocrinologist? They tend to see the most PCOS patients (and diagnose them correctly).

These are the types:

Quote:

traditional PCOS -- anovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance
syndrome X -- anovulatory, increased androgens, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
non-traditional PCOS --anovulatory, normal androgens, obese, insulin resistant or type 2 diabetes
non-traditional PCOS -- ovulatory, increased androgens, mild insulin resistance
idiopathic hirsutism -- ovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance

Rana 05-12-2011 09:14 AM

My own update. I had a birthday. And today, I am up 3 lbs.

I just finished entering all the food I ate and of course, that makes sense -- I had over 3000 calories yesterday! I was stuffed even before dinner and I had already reached my normal 1500 calories for the day. I could have easily skipped it, but boyfriend wanted to celebrate it with me (of course) so I stuffed myself with dinner (which was a high calorie mess, of course).

I'm so stuffed I'm not even hungry today and the scale is up 3 lbs.......

I can't wait to eat my normal light food..... I need to rethink my birthday for next year.

JustSharing83 05-12-2011 11:53 AM

Violet - I will talk to my doctor about possibly having PCOS without cysts and see what kind of response she has, thank you for your post.

Rana - I have only been to my regular doctor; looking into this is still very new, so I may be sent elsewhere. I haven't actually got to talk to anyone about my ultrasound results, but the doctor is out today, so I won't be able to until Friday or Monday. Also, before that poll thread, I had no idea there were so many different kinds of PCOS!! I don't know which type I would be, but traditional jumps out the most. They checked my female hormones, but I don't get the impression they checked the more "male" hormones, so maybe that would help identify my issues. Thank you so much for responding and Happy Belated Birthday! :)

Something confuses me about the ultrasound... Towards the end, the lady doing it asked, "Are they going to send you to a fertility specialist? Because a lot of times they want to go up through the vagina and actually count all these little cysts." So I asked her if she could tell me if she saw cysts and she was not allowed but I had felt certain of it based her question. Then I get the message that everything looked great? I guess I'm frustrated because I'm finally ready for answers but they aren't coming easy. Hopefully I'll get there eventually.

ems81wales 05-12-2011 04:37 PM

update i have been in absolute agony for 3 days now with a constant heavyness and wanting to urinate all the time i went to the gp he tested my water there was no infection so i said could it be to do with endimitriosis and he said yes you could have a cyst pushing on your bladder if i still have it next week i have to go back but im still waiting to see a consultant its been 5 months since i was refered to be actually diagnoised i have only had a abdomal scan and it said bulky ovarys which suggest pcos but my doctor thinks i have both :((((((

Have you researched insulin resistance/syndrome x? Also, my doctor said you don't always have cysts all the time if you have PCOS. My ultrasound was fine but I had all the symptoms so she told me to manage as if I did. That said, metformin was EVIL for me so I'm just managing it with lots of exercise, low carb and cinnamon/chromium/fish oil supplements. Facial hair is no longer an issue. And even though I'm on the pill, my periods are regular--they weren't before. I couldn't even get a period on the pill! The dark areas of skin can be from insulin resistance too...but that wasn't ever an issue for me.

Bridgette76 05-12-2011 06:07 PM

Hi everyone newbie alert.... I just join the site and loving all the support I'm reading. I have been diagnose with PCOS for 7yrs and it seems as if my life was placed on hold for 7yrs. I'm married to a wonderful man who deals with my crazy rollercoaster outburst and food cravings. I had hope one day to have children but I don't think its going to happen.
I'm currently scraping at the bottom of the coffin because I have been told I am borderline DM, which has consume my every emotion to the point that I'm numb inside. So with that being I have started up my life or shall I say taking back my life. I started SB on MOnday and going on 4 days now. I have to say the first 2 days were challenging but I have reach a point where I'm not craving potatoes or cookies, Yah! My goal is to complete phase 1 with some weight loss to maybe start up my monthly cycles and to incorporate some type of excercise into my daily routine. Any support would be greatly appreicated as I'm someone that never completes anything.

How are you?

Today I have a little more energy than usual and no carb cravings.

What are you working on?

Trying to figure out how to incorporate exercise into my life. I can be so lazy and tons of excusing. Also trying to find fun new low carb foods for someone who is a picky eater.

How was last month?

Last month was a blurrrrrrrrrrr

How's your PCOS management going?

I currently take 100mg/Metformin 2xdaily. I have a scheduled appointment with ReprGYN on 23rd, which I hope for good news.

astrophe 05-12-2011 07:46 PM

MY SUPER LONG CHECK IN

Eldercare Land is still challenging, but at least we're moving now. Taking some classes and learning to manage my stress better. I'm trying to be helpful but keep healthy boundaries for my own sake. When it was all Drama City, I wasn't able to sleep for several days and had 2 or 3 panic attacks from the heavy stress. I saw my primary care and she put me on zoloft and xanax. After a few days I felt better because I was actually able to SLEEP! I dropped them after endoc labs told me my liver was elevated and that was the only new thing recently though. I wasn't planning on staying on them anyway.

I saw my endoc this week.

Hypothyroid, syndrome x, insulin resistance, blood sugar -- all stable in good levels/under control. I chalk that all up to diet -- because I suck at the exercise in times of stress!

B12, Vitamin D -- all improved. Last time I was low so she told me to add a separate b12 and d to my general multivitamin. I'm also taking fish oil.

HDL and triglycerides -- normal! Still have to work on the LDL and get more exercise, but good to hear it is improving and coming down.

The surprise was that I hardly ever have had normal tri's. Cutting back on the carbs helped a lot. I'm going to try to buckle down harder to the nutrition exchanges I'd been trying for PCOS.

Low GI, whole foods, kinda paleo seems to be working out. Really it is practically vegan with some lean chicken/fish but I struggle with dropping the wheat. It's a trigger for me -- bread, cake, pizza, flour stuff.

Since dropping the zoloft and xanax the liver biz is coming down quickly so endoc thinks it was from that. Anyone have experience with elevated liver enzymes?

Endoc. wants me on Fortamet even though not IR to try to get the weight to budge and lower androgens.

Taking a BCP break since I had break thru bleeding. Ultrasound were fine other than 2 little cysts so both primary care and endoc suspect it was super high stress causing crazy cycle. Have PAP in a month or so, and the plan is to see if I have menses on my own or what and then decide if I am going back on BCP or not.

So... here's the wrap up for the next 3 mos:
  • Levoxyl for the thyroid
  • continue multi, vit b12, vit D, fish oil (and I can tell the energy difference when I take it vs when I forget)
  • Start fortamet
  • try accupuncture
  • get moving on the exercise
  • Stick to diet but clean it up a bit -- weekends are my downfall
  • schedule massage, accupuncture, PAP test

Alright... I'm back, gals! Let's do this thing and get back to kicking PCOS bootay. :carrot:

I'll come back later to catch up where you gals are all at. Gotta bathe my kid.

A.

D Red757 05-12-2011 09:48 PM

How are you?
I'm just getting back in - if you notice my last sign in date was Sept. of 09 :(. But I'm happy to say this time I'm going to do this!!! I've got to lose this weight and get healthy. Since I was last on the PCOS forum I've had a child (my miracle baby) even after the doc said it would be almost impossible if I didn't get my PCOS under control. She prescribed me a medicine called Megace (Megestrol) which flushed my entire system of unwanted tissues and a HEAVY period as well. After that I got pregnant in Dec. of 09' and had my daughter in Sept. of 10'. I'm not sure if it was due to the reproductive flush or not, but before that I'd never even had a potential pregnancy scare so who knows.

What are you working on?
I'm starting a new fitness program that I found on about.com "6 weeks to fitness for absolute beginners" It's the jump start I needed after almost a year of not working out and sticking to my diet plan. I'm couting calories this time around and staying away from the unhealthy carb variety.

How was last month?
Last month was BLAH!!! I worked most of the month and when I wasn't working I was with Chloe full time. She's a full time job all on her own!!

How's your PCOS management going?
I've honestly not been tracking anything going on with my PCOS. After having a baby I breastfed and finally got AF around the time I should have once I stopped breastfeeding. Shes been regular since - so I have'nt had any worries there. I'm sure soon I'll need to check in with the GYNO though.

astrophe 05-13-2011 08:06 AM

Violet73: How was mother's day? Glad to hear you are doing well on the cinnamon and chromium!

Rana: You know you totally inspire me? All the stuff going on for you and you still hang in there. WTG and happy bday!

DinaAS:
Welcome! Sorry the docs are telling you it is in your head. . BTDT -- keeping trying to find a doc that will listen.

JustSharing83: You remind me a lot of me when I was in my 20's and trying to get the formal dx. My labs kept coming back normal but I still had no menses, weight gain, and felt all weird.

It was a nurse practioner who told me to keep an eye on the labs because while normal it was "low end" normal on the thyroid and I might just not get a dx for that until it went off the scale. I asked her how come docs wouldn't LISTEN to how I was feeling instead of waiting for some dumb computer printout to be where they thought. She had no answer and wished me luck.

A few years went by and then my levels were low enough to get out of the normal range and I got the hypothyroid dx. I also got the PCOS. For me I took the PCOSA quiz, printed it out, took it to my primary care and they referred me to an endoc. The quiz is shorter than when I took it, but it may still be worth a try. Check the inciid faq for what labs to be checking too.

I also have acanothosis nigricans patches but my Insulin resistance is under control -- it just takes time to clear up and I think weight plays into it too. And I think if you are just getting them, it takes time for insulin to show up as off -- your body may be compensating so you test normal but the AN shows the excess insulin spilling out into the skin.

I also gained weight fast in late teens/20's and it has been up and down ever since trying to get it off!

Do you have skin tags? That's another clue.

Keep trying to find a doc that will work with you. PCOS manifests in many ways and to me you sound like maybe a traditional or syndrome x type. But def annovulatory if you aren't getting menses. GL!

ems81wales:
Sounds like you are doing great on WW! Awesome! I hope you feel better though with that ab pain.

Gotta get kid to school... I'll keep reading and catching up later.

Hope you all have a great day! :)

A.

Rana 05-13-2011 02:12 PM

Thank you, astrophe! I'm finding that the more I do this healthy eating thing and consistent exercise, that I don't really turn to the old junkie favorites that I used to think I couldn't live without. I think it's really just a question of being consistent and even when you don't want to eat healthy, to remind yourself that you do know better than your cravings and that you will feel better by choosing better. Small victories.

Good news today too, I got my period! Wooooooohoooooo!!!!!

Lele130013 05-13-2011 04:34 PM

Hi there new here just found this site and am so glad to have found it. I was diagnosed PCOS at 14 years old but no one has ever tried to figure out IR except I meet every criteria and since starting a week ago on the IR diet and slowly introducing excercise it has been a hard task but going the road because if this weight doesn't come off I am looking at a short life (high bp and cholesterol and grandmother died at 40) so the road I will travel and continue with the bumps along the way.

As for how am I? Busy but trying to include more time for exercise and relaxing I am a very high stress person and job/school doesn't help so I know that only adds to my problems

What are you working on? Finishing my thesis proposal and continuing on this weight loss journey

How was last month? Enlightening to say the least after my diagnosis they basically said bc was your only option no cure and have a great life so to actually have sat down and researched and come across a ton of info has been a huge weight lifted off my back

How's PCOS Management? I am a lucky one they caught mine really early due to how severe the cysts were and w/ them stopping me from ovulating through bc mine is pretty under control as for the reproductive aspects. Now to get the weight under control.

Hope everyone has a good month ahead and again it is really nice all the support you show to one another!

D Red757 05-13-2011 05:32 PM

Welcome Lele!!!! I've been absent from this board for a while, but when I was fully present I got alot of helpful feedback. Whether it be for recipes, exercise or general conversation concerning PCOS. So you've come to the right place!!! There are some people still here from before - but alot more new people that I haven't gotten to know as of yet. Hopefully we can all help if you need anything!!! ;)

astrophe 05-19-2011 08:35 AM

OMG -- just making my kid's PB&J for her lunch box makes me want to scarf down the whole loaf of bread. This business of giving up white/wheat is HARD! :o

Ok, that's all I had to share for now. :)

A.

dragonlady1978 05-19-2011 10:51 AM

Astrophe- Have you thought of trying a milk thistle supplement? It helps improve liver function and has very low interaction risk w/ other meds.

There is no way I can live without bread for the rest of my life. I take a good dose of cinnamon and watch nutrition labels, but I don't see a reason to eliminate anything completely. For me, telling myself I could never have something again-something I have to keep in my house no less-would be setting myself up to fail because I'd obsess until I caved.

White bread is a no-no for me. I can't be trusted with it lol. I LOVE nature's own light wheat or light honey wheat breads. Only 40 calories a slice, and it doesn't start me on that carb craving rollercoaster. I like pb&j too. I use sugar free jelly and just a Tbsp of regular peanut butter, it is friggin' awesome on the honey wheat bread.

astrophe 05-19-2011 09:36 PM

I'm trying to rotate out dairy and wheat and see which one it is that's making me all nose cloggy. Haven't yet seen allergist but I got it down to one of those two as the culprit.

OK day today, but trying to do damage control -- going to do my walk soon. Had some stress eating this afternoon.... coping with eldercare stress is still a big challenge too.

But I'm here! That's an improvement over last month's crazy!

Baby steps, right? :)
A.

AngelCOH 05-21-2011 06:39 AM

Hey!

I just stopped by to say hello!

I was diagnosed with PCOS in Jan '06 but suffering since puberty. I have terrible hirsutism and I am obese. I have been told to go away for a year and lose weight then I might get some laser hair removal on my face, yay!

I have been warned I may need IVF in the future and if I am overweight the NHS (I'm in the UK) will not give this to me. This has never been a concern for me until last month when I got engaged to a lovely man who wants children. Now I have a wedding and future babies as a brilliant reason to slim :D and yet it is still so, so hard!

I have been on all sorts of medication, one designed for men with testicular cancer made me so sick, another for insulin resistance I had to stop too but now I have put on some pounds where before I stayed the same. I think starting BCPs to stop my terrible PMS has contibuted to that too :( I keep taking spironolactone though to try and control the hair. Anyway I am still trying to stay positive and I know losing a decent amount of weight will hopefully help me manage it all a whole lot better!

Looking forward to conversing with you all!

ems81wales 05-21-2011 09:24 AM

hey everyone i finally got my hospital appointment to see a consultant and try get some answers it is the 6th june so i will let you know how it goes i do feel abit better this week, but i have exams in college so very stressed hope your all well xxx

astrophe 05-21-2011 03:19 PM

AngelCOH: If it is any comfort, I only took Metformin while TTC. My cycles only got to every other month, but I conceived and had my daughter despite that! www.tcoyf.com software helped a lot. Don't lose heart!

ems81wales: GL with both the exams and the doc appt! :)

Had a good, active day yesterday. Today not so much, and my eating out with the family screwed up my food log so I'm back to damange control...

It is like one good day then one off day, one good day... I suppose I'll take it any which way it comes for now!

Stress is at bay today -- that's good.

hugs

Rana 05-22-2011 11:44 AM

Welcome!

I am finally back and I need you guys to keep me focused. I have been traveling a lot and last week was another business trip (and more to come next week!) and I need to remember all the good healthy habits I have and not get sidetracked by food pushers.

I'm up three pounds, which is a pain in the ***, and I know I can probably go down quickly, since it may be just me retaining water. But, I'm afraid it's not and I want to go back down. I can't go back up.

I also have an appointment with the endo on Tuesday afternoon, which should be an interesting conversation. I was supposed to have been taking Metformin and I never did and this appointment was to see my progress.

I guess my question in regards to this is should I go to the appointment? I've lost weight (diet, chelated chromium) but I haven't reached my goal (160!) and I'm not taking the Metformin.

Suggestions? Should I just wait for the annual appointment?

I'm back on the exercise bandwagon and I even exercised while I was travel. The key now is to focus on FOOD, CALORIES, and MACROS.
