Need help figuring our calorie & fatg for Jiffy Cake Mix...

  • I need to find out the calories and fat grams for Jiffy Cake Mix.

I'm not sure if what's listed on the website and on the box is for the dry cake mix (which is what I need the calories and fat grams for) or if it's for the already prepared cake mix. Does that make sense?

I have an apple crisp recipe that uses just the dry cake mix, and I'm trying to figure out the calories and fat grams in it.

    Thanks!

  • Unless it states otherwise on the box, I would assume the nutritional info on the box is for ONLY what is in the box (i.e., just the mix). They wouldn't be able to accurately determine the info for the finished product because people use different oils, different sized eggs, different milk, or whatever you may have to add to the dry mix. Some boxes will note "as prepared with 2% milk" or something such as that, but if there is no such note, then I'm 99% sure the box label is only for what is in the box.
  • Thanks. That's kinda what I figured, but I wasn't sure.

  • In the US, food manufacturers are required to list the calories for the food product as it is packaged, without any other preparation. They can optionally include the nutritional data for the product as prepared, but must clearly label it as such (and still have to include the nutritional data for the product as packaged, so there would be two sets of nutritional data).

So unless there are two sets of nutritional data on the box, what is listed is for the cake mix as packaged.

You can find out more than you ever wanted to know about US requirements for nutritional data at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/label.html.
