So whole wheat pasta...

  • is this really that much better for you than regular pasta?

I like it. it tastes good. that makes me nervous.
  • Yes, because it has lots of fiber. If you buy the right kind.

Read labels. Some "whole wheat" pastas, like some breads, claim to be made from whole wheat but they're not. The whole wheat pasta that I buy is made from whole wheat flour and has 6 grams of fiber per serving.

    I love the stuff
  • It is good for you because it is made from whole grains. Now remember though that WHEAT PASTA is basically just like WHITE PASTA but WHOLE WHEAT PASTA is the kind you are looking for.

It is not only the fiber but also the protein that makes it good for you.

Personally I don't like the taste but I do like Barilla Plus and it is also high fiber and high protein.
  • yay! that's the kind I got.

I'm trying to eat less pasta, but because it is a quick and easy thing to make I still make it sometimes. This stuff is goood.
  • P.S. Thank you everyone for tolerating my food adventures.
  • I like the barilla plus too. It is NOT wheat pasta at all, but made from other sources like chick peas! Given that it isn't whole wheat I've been wondering if it really isn't as good for me as it could be, but then I figure I really love it and it's better than white, so... I'm not gonna worry about it after all.

I've also started trying some whole wheat pastas and find I like them better than I used to. So I may get there yet!
  • I don't eat much pasta for the simple reason that it's high in calories. I still eat regular pasta as well as whole wheat, but I just don't eat it that often. 2 oz. of that stuff is about 200 calories and 2oz. isn't enough, as far as I'm concerned. When I want pasta, I WANT PASTA. Not some piddly little amount that's not even going to satisfy me and then I've wasted 200 calories.

About the only time I eat pasta these days is when it's included into one of my calorie-controlled meals (Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, etc.). But I really looooove that whole wheat pasta and every once in a while I break down and cook 2oz. of it and just try to add stuff, like cooked veggies and/or shrimp or chicken to bulk it up so it seems like there's more pasta than there really is.
  • wyllenn is right it is not a whole wheat pasta and it falls between white and whole wheat so it is better than white but not as good as whole wheat.

LLV, FYI most pastas cook up between 1 cup and 1 1/2 cups (Barilla Plus cooks up on all their shapes to about 1 1/2 cups) and if you couple that with some veggies/salad and some protein you have a huge meat for very little calories/points..

Yeah, that's what I sometimes do. I'll add shrimp or chicken for protein and then usually have a veggie on the side or cook the veggies and put them in the pasta as well to make one big bowl.

Now I want pasta for lunch, lol.
  • 2 oz of pasta may not be much if that's all you're having, but I've gotten into the habit of using pasta primarily as a side dish in addition to an entree usually chicken), and 2 oz is WAY more than enough for that! It helps to fill my taste for pasta without giving me the desire to overdo it since I've got a yummy main part of the entree (like chicken baked with tomato sauce and cheese--YUM!). I've also started using different sauces instead of just tomato--I LOVE doing spaghetti (broken up into smaller pieces so I don't have to slurp it!) mixed with half a box of frozen chopped broccoli, half a box of frozen chopped spinach, and some honey dijon marinade--ooh, I might have to make it tonight, now!
  • quit talking about what you add to pasta! LOL! I am soooooooo hungry right now and I forgot my lunch at home.
  • wow-I can't believe I just came on the board to ask a question about whole wheat pasta and here's the answer already. I bought a box today, the Barilla, and was going to ask if it tastes similar to regular spaghetti....I found a recipe with peppers & taco mix and ground turkey breast, and we are having it tonight. I hope the pasta is good.

Definitely as a side dish it's plenty. I like fixing linguine or noodles (regular or whole wheat, doesn't matter to me because I like both) and having it on the side with a chicken breast or fish.

I buy individually wrapped chicken breasts in bulk and they're about 4 ounces each. When I want one, I just grab one out of the bag, thaw it out and make it according to what my tastebuds want that day. Sometimes BBQ sauce, sometimes Hawaiian marinade or sometimes I throw it onto my George Foreman grill. I keep a good stock of those chicken breasts around because I eat them so often. They also make great grilled chicken sandwiches.

    Okay. Now I'm hungry.

    lol

I'm hungry too and I'm getting ready to head to the store. I shouldn't go to the store hungry, but it's more fun that way because if I go to the store when I'm full, nothing looks good and I end up not getting what I need. Even things that are on my list I'll pass up because they just don't look good at the time and then I later kick myself in the butt because I didn't pick it up

Just try it, you'll like it

I personally don't notice much of a difference in taste and texture from regular spaghetti. It might be a slight chewier, but it's nothing drastic.

    Whole wheat pasta rocks!
