Good Sources of Protein???

  • Ok, I need some good sources for protein! I eat alot of carbs, and veggies and fruit....but for snacks and such What can I eat??
  • Are you vegan or vegetarian? Assuming you mean non-meat products? There are some great snacks that are high in protein, but some are going to depend on whether you want to eat any meat/fish/dairy. I'll leave out poultry, beef, and pork products. There are a lot of other possibilities for soy-based proteins if you are vegan.

There are always nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, peanuts, almonds, etc). Dairy products are good sources of protein - yogurt, cheeses, cottage cheese, milk. Eggs are great, tofu, tuna fish, beans and split peas. You may be wondering how to get some of this into "snack" form.

My snacks are usually dairy products - yogurt, a piece of string cheese, cottage cheese w/ tomatoes or fruit.

Hummus is a decent source of protein. I usually have some with baked pita chips or crackers. I like dips so I like to make blackbean dip or just a small cup of black beans w/ pico de gallo or sour cream on top.

Tunafish with crackers is a favorite of my bf's. My favorite is putting it on a lettuce leaf and rolling it up - I like the crunch and fresh taste of lettuce instead of the density of bread, but you could use a slice of wholegrain bread (which usually also has protein) I make egg salad but I take out some of the yolks so it is mostly egg whites that way I'm still getting protein but losing some of the fat.

Nuts and seeds.. my bf loves pumpkin seeds and nuts as a snack.. I love a little peanut butter with celery, apples, or crackers. I have been using the Natural PB and draining off some of the oil to cut down on the fat and you dont get all the added sugars, etc they put in the regular version.
  • Thanks so much for the ideas! It's finding nutritous snacks that I find hard....without being tempted to grab chips or something like that!
