Ooh, BBQ Chicken Chili sounds amazing. Is the recipe for that on this forum? I wasn't able to find it.

I got it from a WW cookbook. Here is the recipe. I double it and put it in my crockpot--it is Yum-O!!

1 lb. Ground chicken breast
1 large onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves of garlic
2 (15 1/2 oz) cans red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15 1/2 oz) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 (14 1/2 oz) can diced tomatoes
1 (12 oz) bottle chili sauce
1 (4 1/2 oz) can chopped green chiles
1/4 c chili powder
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon cumin

(I add in some liquid smoke also, just a bit to give it a smokey flavor)

Put chicken, pepper, onion and garlic into crock pot. Stir with fork to blend. Add the kidney and pinto beans, and everything else into crock pot, stir well, cover and cook 4-5 hours on high or 8-10 hours on low.

This recipe makes 8 servings at 5 points each.

Per Serving (1 1/4c): 280 calories, 3g fat, 10g fiber.

You can also mix everything together the night before and refridgerate then just put the insert in the crockpot and turn on in the morning.

Enjoy!!

Just a quick question

How do I get the ticker???

freedomreins 01-29-2008 04:51 PM

Thanks! It sounds delicious! Might have to make a trip to the store and get some of the ingredients just to try it out! I don't have a crockpot, so how long do you figure it would take to cook on the stove? Seeing as I'm just one person, that would make more than enough to freeze and enjoy on cold days... yummy... thanks so much for sharing!

ToulaWW, you have to have 30 posts in order to access your signature through your user CP, then you can have a ticker :) I just got mine back yesterday (the 30 post rule was just recently implemented) since I didn't have 30 posts myself!

I would think just long enough that the chicken is done and the flavors are incorporated. Also they onions and peppers should not be crunchy. But as long as the chicken is done, it should be ok, everything else is already cooked.

kelijpa 01-29-2008 05:47 PM

I was thinking if you were going to cook it on the stove, to brown the chicken, it wouldn't take much time to get it cooked.

I have a stew recipe and after you add all the ingredients it has you bring it to a boil and then lower heat and simmer for about 1 1/2 hrs. That would work for the chili I'm sure. The longer you can simmer, the better it gets, I'm sure.

Can't wait to try it.

Also, I got a small crock pot at Walmart for around 10 bucks, not the dip size, a little bigger, it would probably be ideal for cooking for one. We got it to use in our camper.

freedomreins 01-29-2008 06:24 PM

Good idea, I think I will cook the chicken first. After that, it probably wouldn't take too long. I can't wait to try it, it sounds delicious. Might be walking into town tomorrow to get what I don't have... and that'll give me some exercise as well! :)

Jane 01-29-2008 09:16 PM

Mmmm, chili! Sounds great!

Plans for super bowl? None yet, but my son will probably be here to watch the game with DH. DS is trying to lose weight, too, so maybe I'll fix some lite veggie pizza wedges for appetizers, then have some of Steph's chili.

kelijpa 01-30-2008 11:11 AM

I bought some ground chicken when I went to the store this morning, that sounded so good! I'm going to make this buffalo chicken dip, it was in with the coupons, I'm going to lighten it up, I think with the wing sauce it'll be good.
2 10 oz. cans of chunk breast of chicken
2 8 oz. cream cheese (I'm using light)
1 c. ranch dressing (again lightening)
1/4-1/3 c. pepper sauce (I guess depending on how hot you want it)
1 1/2 c. cheddar cheese (I always use the 2%, 2 pts. for 1/4 c.)

place cream cheese in shallow casserole, microwave on 50% 'til softened (2-3 mins.)
stir in drained chicken, dressing, sauce and 1 c. of cheese. Sprinkle top with remaining cheese.
Microwave at full for 2-4 mins. until hot and bubbly.
It says serve with crackers, chips and celery sticks, so I'm just going to have it with celery sticks.

I think it'll be great and way better for us than having buffalo wings!!

kelijpa 01-30-2008 11:12 AM

I keep seeing commercials for diet cherry chocolate Dr. Pepper. I wonder how it is?

suitejudyblueeyes 01-30-2008 01:45 PM

Mmm... chili... I'd love to make a white chili, I haven't done that since last winter sometime. That recipe looks good!

Re: diet chocolate dr. pepper -- I've never had it but my friend is in love with it. Apparently it tastes like a melted tootsie roll. Might be good if melted tootsie rolls are your kind of thing. I still haven't been convinced to try it :p

I'm going up to my dad's house this weekend to visit with him, and my sister and her family are going to come by too. I just found out my dad & stepmother are on a no-sugar, low-sodium diet for health reasons, and that they've been getting some exercise in... So I'm kind of not dreading eating there this time! Usually they go way overboard on the food they prepare for us, but it sounds like it'll be under control this time. They live out in the country and it's supposed to be pretty nice so I'm gonna throw my bike in my truck and get a little rural riding in :)

I'm ready for the weekend already... Is it the weekend?

LizzieW 01-30-2008 01:58 PM

Hi again, Flex-Talkers! I got stuck offline for two days due to a computer virus  but I think I got that all sorted out...:comp:

Anyway -- that chili recipe sounds great! I'm going to give it a try soon. We don't follow football in my family (DH is planning to watch the "Toilet Bowl":lol3: -- a real show! It's on the DIY network I think), but have fun to those that do!

I have a pancake breakfast to attend with my son on Saturday morning (benefit for his school), and he's already trying to help me with my program choices (he said "let's bring your oatmeal packets -- surely they'll have hot water on hand for people's tea!"). I'm really grateful for all the support I've got -- here and at home. It really helps me keep my eye on the prize! Hugs to you all...

And suitejudy... biking! Sounds so much fun! I totally forgot I even had a bike. :o How pitiful is that? LOL

hafowler 01-30-2008 02:32 PM

Awww, LizzieW, that's so sweet that your son helps you plan ahead. How old is he?

Man, I haven't ridden a bicycle in YEARS. The one I have is too short for me now, that's how long it's been. What I really want to do when I'm in a little better shape is learn how to roller blade. I used to LOVE roller skating when I was a kid. I bought a pair of blades about 10 years ago and never used them. That's one of the things I'm looking forward to, activity wise.

Mmmm, chili. My mom makes an AWESOME turkey chili. It rips holes in my gut, but man is it yummy! LOL Oh, and on-plan, as well.

freedomreins 01-30-2008 04:25 PM

LizzieW, your son sounds so sweet! My support network basically consists of these forums - I live with two housemates that eat whatever they want, whenever they want, and load it with gravy, ketchup, mayonnaise, and etc, and another housemate who barely eats and if she does, it's chips or yogurt or chocolate. So I agree, the support here is excellent. I spend a lot of time on here these days to encourage me not to eat whatever snack I've got my eye on, lol. And it seems to be working - scale was at 159.8 today, which breaks into the next "decade" for the first time, though it's not my official weigh-in day yet. It totally made my day though! I think a lot of my success has come from the support in this community because I'm not going to the meetings and I don't have WW Online either.

That Dr. Pepper sounds absolutely revolting. I don't like regular Dr. Pepper anyway, but diet cherry CHOCOLATE? Ewww. lol

Was so disappointed that I didn't make it to the store to get the stuff for that chili today. I will definitely make the effort to get it tomorrow because I keep thinking about how satisfying a nice bowl of chili would be for dinner. Mmm...

I really like rollerblading, hafowler. But inside! lol We have a roller rink near us and I've been there a few times. Outside, I find that since I'm not very good at it, every rock and curb and bump is just another reason to fall over (the other being my real lack of rollerblading ability!).

My old mini stepper broke, but I got an email from Amazon saying that my new one is on its way! I am so excited to try it out, as I spent a bit more money on this one than my old one, which was really a waste of money in the first place. That, and it was so incredibly loud! Hopefully having a stepper again will encourage me to exercise more regularly, but I have done pilates two days in a row now, and will probably do some more tonight, so that's a small step in the right direction!

I don't know if you have been doing Pilates long, but I love it. I find that when I am consistant with the Pilates, inches seem to fall of my waist and it make you feel so strong once you get over the feeling that every muscle in your core hurt :)

freedomreins 01-30-2008 06:18 PM

Ooh, thanks for telling me that Steph, it is particularly inspiring! No, I haven't been doing Pilates very long... this is only my fifth time (as once I posted here, I went and did my workout). Now that you have said that, though, I think I will definitely stick with it! I have a friend who swears by it, and she is what got me started on it. How long do you figure it will take before I start seeing a difference? I know I could feel it in my abs this morning, and I pushed myself harder tonight too, so hopefully I will have that dull (but pleasant!) ache when I wake up tomorrow. I have heard it takes about 3-4 weeks to start actually noticing a difference. I am going on a cruise at the end of March so if I stick with it for the next two months, surely it will make me a bit more ready for the horror that is my bathing suit!!

Zoesmom04 01-31-2008 04:32 AM

Hello ladies!!!

It has been a while since I've posted anything :comp: I've been in a funk lately. I think I've mentioned that I had twins that were stillborn 4 weeks ago; ever since then I have been on a rollercoaster and I don't think I'll be off of it for a while. I was doing good the past two weeks (especially with my WW) but this week has been horrible

It is 3:20 am (my time) and I am WIDE AWAKE! I usually start getting sleepy around 4 and won't wake up until 3 in the afternoon! Then I wake up feeling like I'm starving. So I run to the kitchen and eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in sight! :cookie:

Sorry, I don't mean to bring all this up. This has nothing to do with WW.

I'll just say that I haven't been on track this past week and I'm ready to pick myself up and keep going. It's just hard. I feel like I've already ruined it.

Maybe I'll stay up, eat a healthy breakfast, go for a 30 minute walk, and get a couple of hours of sleep. Maybe I can get myself back on a regular shedule...

freedomreins 01-31-2008 06:20 AM

Zoesmom, I'm so sorry to hear about your twins. That must be very difficult to deal with. Don't be too hard on yourself if you have a bad week, but perhaps having something like counting points and getting in your water/exercise to focus on will help you get through it.

I can offer advice on the crazy sleeping though. I live in Canada but go to university in England, and every time I go back and forth, I'm an absolute mess with jet lag (it's worse coming to England than it is going back to Alberta). I was falling asleep about 4:30 in the morning and sleeping until 3:30 or so in the afternoon for about four days before I finally got really fed up with it. I found that when I had a 9 o'clock class to get up and go to, even if I was exhausted from falling asleep at 4:30 in the morning, if I stayed up all day until around midnight, that helped. Also, when I was getting really frustrated with trying to sleep on my own, I used melatonin strips and they knocked me right out. It might be something you should look into if you still have trouble sleeping in a few more days. Whatever you do, when you wake up so early, set an alarm so you don't sleep into the afternoon again. It will do you far more harm than good (trust me on this one, lol). So if you go back to bed at 5 or 6, after your breakfast and walk, try setting your alarm for 11 or some time that is at least still in the morning! It might be hard to roll out of bed, but it's even harder to try to fall asleep the next night! I'm sure that this week will be much better for you! Put your not-so-successful week behind you and start fresh! I had to do that last week... last week was a bad week for me too! Good luck!! :)

Jane 01-31-2008 07:55 AM

Zoesmom - it's ok to talk about everyday things here. After all, it's that stuff that influences our eating. I can't tell you how very, very sorry I am to read about your babies! Somehow, I missed that info before.

Zoesmom04 01-31-2008 09:45 AM

Thanks freedomreigns and Jane!

It helps me to talk about it, of course. I just don't want to make anyone else feel uncomfortable. That's all.

Freedomreigns - What are melatonin strips??? Are they OTC? Or do you need a prescription?

Since I got out of the hospital, I've been on Antibiotics and Vicodin. You would think the Vicodin would knock me out but it hasn't. I guess there's a part of me that is fighting. I feel like my body is dead tired but my mind just keeps going. :dizzy:

As far as going out to eat: I haven't even step foot in a resturaunt yet. I'm too scared. I do good enough just to eat at home. :cbg:

But that WW Chili sounds REALLY good. :T Thanks for the recipe!!!

BTW, does any one of you have a MySpace? Just wondering; Thought we could support each other on there too.

freedomreins 01-31-2008 09:53 AM

The melatonin strips are, well, I'm not really sure what they are, but they resemble those mint strips in that little tiny case that you pop in your purse and I think the ones I have are chocolate flavoured (not that they taste anything like it, but still!). I got them over the counter... in fact, I think I may have bought them at the airport... I'm not sure. But I definitely don't have a prescription for them. I've tried Nytol as well and the melatonin strips win hands down. I was out like a light almost the second I crawled into bed and slept really well, not waking up constantly as I had been before. I only needed to take them for one night before I was on schedule enough to get back to my own sleeping habits.

Sorry, no MySpace here.

I would say doing Pilates consistantly between now and your cruise you will definetly see results in your inches. It seems to really tighten everything up and because you are working your abs the most the building of muscle there will burn your tummy fat alot faster. Where are you going on a cruise to? I am going to Vegas for my birthday in March, so I plan on starting Pilates again to get some extra inches off before then :)

suitejudyblueeyes 01-31-2008 02:26 PM

lizzie - OMG your son sounds absolutely adorable. What wonderful support :D

freedom - is a mini stepper different from those huge things they have at the gym? I'm invisioning things that look like bicycle pedals on the floor... Hrmm... Always looking for more ways to work out in our (very small) living room!

zoesmom - I'm sorry to hear about your babies. And having trouble sleeping doesn't help either! Hopefully you find something that will help with that, I don't think I've ever taken anything to help me sleep so have no suggestions but I can offer these:   :) And no myspace here, either...

Jane - thanks for stopping by my blog :) Thankfully everything has worked out, though it's still pretty stressful. I wanted to tell you don't worry about calling me Judy, that's a logical thing to do with my screenname! :p Someone ought to write up a big book of "Netiquette" so we all know what to do in every situation :)

So let's see... It's been 3 days since my last work out :o I was doing great with exercising every day or every other day, but with all the stuff I had to go through this week all the sudden I just lost the motivation. I'm going back to it tonight though, no question -- right after I get a hair cut. (Yay, hair cut! It's something I've put off for way too long...)

I'm getting nervous about my WI. This will be my first since I gave away my scale... So I have NO idea what to expect. How the heck do others deal with this? How do you deal with not knowing until you're THERE? What if it turns out horribly? Should I expect the worst? That's not a good mindset to get into... I have no idea how to prepare myself for this! ACK! I'm really, really hoping for a loss this week... even a teensy one... I need to see some motion in the proper direction or I'll have to start seriously questioning my ability to do this thing. I think I'm just getting myself too worked up about it.

Hey, I wonder if my haircut will help my weight go down?

I only weigh at my meetings and I know that if I followed the program the way you are supposed to that I don't really care what the scale says. The scale is not my only measure of success. It's all a mind game and you have to get yourself into the mindset that the scale doesn't matter. If you know you are following the program andyou know that you feel better you will have success regardless of what the scale says. Good luck on your WI!!

That's funny about the hair, but...A few months ago I was dieting on my own and not doing too much, just watching what I eat and being a little more concious. Well I had really long hair (and my hair is thick) and I decided to go have it cut and donate it to locks of love. Well I lost 4 pounds of hair. So it is possible :)

freedomreins 01-31-2008 02:52 PM

Steph, we are cruising from LA to Mexico. I am so excited. I have never been on a cruise before, and I think this is the sort of incentive I needed to get my act together!

A mini stepper is like a stair master but without all the bells and whistles and it is only the size of about two shoe boxes put together side-by-side. I tuck mine under my desk when I am finished. When I was using it regularly, I noticed a huge difference in the firmness of my legs and also, it made my rear end quite a bit smaller! Of all the places on my body that I wouldn't have minded keeping a bit of extra weight, that's where I lost it from first! I really recommend them as an at-home exercise machine. They're not very expensive and doing it 30-50 minutes a day, four or five days a week, really helped tone up my legs. You can adjust the height of the steps too. I just put a DVD on and start stepping!

suitejudyblueeyes 01-31-2008 03:51 PM

steph - Wow, that's a lot of hair!! I certainly don't have that much... maybe 3" that need to come off... so we're talking ounces here :p

freedom - thanks, I'm definitely going to look into that. I love working my legs, and it'd be nice to have something relatively mindless that i can do when watching a movie or something.

Zoesmom -- first of all, I am sooo sorry to hear about your losses.
I just wanted to comment about you "bringing all this up has nothing to do with WW" when in fact it DOES. Your stress, along with other factors including job, happiness, etc. has everything to do with weight loss. It all plays a factor in how we lose.
I'm glad you are posting, especially since talking about it makes you feel better.
Take one step at a time, don't dwell on your slip-ups, and try to plan. (easier said than done, but surely there must be a day that you would have to yourself that you can sit down and plan out a few days worth of meals). Maybe on one of your insomnia nights you can pull out the pen and paper and start planning, and then take another night to chop and prep some healthy choices to have for when you do wake up. Just a few suggestions.
 to you, and :goodluck: with the program. You have come to the right place for support!!

shrinkinglizzy 02-01-2008 04:51 PM

Hi all,

New to the whole WW boards but not to the whole dieting world. Just wanted to say HI on the chat thread, and also confess that I am in binge mode today, and having JUST STARTED WW Flex, I've already used 15 of my 35 Flex points!!!

Seeing as I'm also quitting smoking today, I'm considering giving myself the weekend off of counting and start Monday. Wow the relief I just felt by saying that!! Yeah, that's the plan.

OK, off to the first 5 hours of a weekend long class about psychological assessments....uuuuuuuggggggggggghhhhhhhhh...

S

freedomreins 02-01-2008 04:57 PM

Don't worry, last week I hit Saturday and had used all my flex points, and my week only starts on Wednesday! lol Some weeks are better than others, as I'm sure you know from past dieting experience! Quitting smoking too? Trying to do that and lose weight at the same time is, I imagine, quite a feat. It will certainly be good for your health, though, to put away those cigarettes, not to mention your wallet! I had two grandparents die of smoke-related cancer a few years ago, so I applaud you for getting out of it now and not putting it off, as my grandmother used to ("I'll quit next year", etc). They both smoked almost up until their last days because of their addictions. Good luck shrinkinglizzy!! I'm rooting for you!

kelijpa 02-01-2008 06:23 PM

My grandma was like yours Freedom, she passed away about 25 years prior to my grandad, she was totally addicted. It kind of made me hate smoking, but I have smoked myself in my younger days, but something made me puke after having a ciggy and that was the end of that.

Lizzy, don't get stressed about the flex points, I would recommend still keeping some kind of record of what you eat, I'm at 41 FPs, my week starts on tuesday, but I'm afraid if I don't keep track I'll just totally let loose.

We decided to have a treat night last night and now I have to just keep working my program, we're not going to lose every week of our life, so we have to learn to get back OP after slipping.

So, now I have to drink some more water (for some reason this is a constant challenge for me anymore, I have some good days and then I can hardly get myself to drink 20 oz. a day! sheesh) and get on the treadmill. We had ice rain and then regular rain so my outside walk was impossible :(

Anyhow, best to everyone...thanks for posting, it helps me even if I just read everything and don't get a chance to post!

freedomreins 02-03-2008 11:41 AM

Well, I made the BBQ Chicken Chili for dinner tonight and it was FANTASTIC! I had to modify it a bit because of what I had and what I didn't have, so I used less ingredients. One can each of the beans, a bottle of sweet chili sauce so I could omit the molasses and brown sugar (I used a bit of regular white sugar instead), half an onion, four chopped up chicken breast steaks, a red pepper instead of a green one, a can of tomato puree, garlic and cumin. I didn't use any of the other things because I didn't have them. It was the best chili I have ever had. It burned my pot badly, even on the lowest setting on our hob, but it was soooo good I don't really care! lol

steph0320 02-05-2008 12:52 PM

Quiet board the past few days :) I hope everyone is doing well.

Freedom--I am glad you enjoyed the chili. I am eating my last bowl of leftovers right now :( I will have to make more this weekend. It is 80 degrees outside right now so hard to be enthused about eating chili.

Well I just wanted to check in. I have WI tomorrow and not sure how that will go, d*m* beer!! :)

crbowles 02-05-2008 01:30 PM

Hey, hey, hey!! Hope all is well with everyone. Today is a better day for me. I generally try to save my points for the afternoon an evening and I never use my flex points. However, yesterday I thought I would enjoy a larger point breakfast and it threw me off the rest of the day. I only get 23 points so I have to be choosy.

How do you all split up your points?

Steph, I must find this chili recipe and good luck with your WI!!

shrinkinglizzy - how are you doing? I haven't seen you around in a few days... still hanging in there with the quitting smoking?

kelijpa - how's that water comin'? :D

stephanie - it's warm here too! Like 70 degrees, it's so fantastic. I just got back from lunch and had been sitting outside in the sun eating my fresh spinach and blueberries and my orange... all very summery things... it was a shame to come back inside from that, it made me want to go run around somewhere!! Good luck with your WI tomorrow, be sure to add it to our kitty litter countdown in the WI thread :D

crbowles - I usually just eat however I feel during the day. Sometimes I want a big breakfast and a lighter dinner, sometimes I want a tiny breakfast and a giant lunch. I don't have a set way to divide up my points, and I always have a couple of options for dinner to fit with how many points I have left.

---

I have to say I am SO impressed by everybody in the WI thread. It really makes a difference how I perceive weight loss when we do it all cumulative like that, you know?

Last night turned into a bit of a disaster, with me eating three times as much food at dinner as I had anticipated, and three times the dessert (granted dessert was a 1-point fudgecicle but STILL), resulting in me going into my flex points by 8, on top of the 10 I ate on Sunday at my dad's house. The only reason it's an issue for me is because I didn't plan on it -- I like to plan on indulging, not feel like I'm compelled to overeat. That's behavior I don't want to return to, you know? Then again, it's TOM and there might be a little hormonal excuse somewhere in there :) Oh well. I didn't do too poorly and I'll just move on.......

Tonight I need to get some exercise in, and I REALLY want to do something outside since it's so warm, but it's going to be dark by the time I'm ready to exercise! (Have to eat dinner first and let that settle or else I die.) I hate that the position of the sun hasn't quite caught up to the temperature :p Who decided working 9-6 through the BEST parts of the day was a good idea??

Guess we should be quiet about the sunny warm 80 that we are having here in Florida :)

Yum! I love this stuff. I typically am a Diet Dr Pepper girl anyhow. It doesn't have any taste of Diet Dr Pepper -- it's more of a chocolate flavor. When I was in high school (20ish years ago), there was a pop called Canfield's Diet Chocolate Soda. This tastes pretty similar. I won't drink it in the car because it has a reddish tinge to it -- I can see that staining clothes quite easily. :) When I do have this, I prefer to have it after lunch or supper as a dessert because it's kind of sweet. It's a "limited edition" so it won't be around forever so I'm trying to NOT buy it too often. (Because if I had it every day, I think I'd really be bummed that I can't get it anymore.)

*sigh* Well, the good news is that at least we don't have any mosquitoes buzzing around. I just dread having to drive to Fargo tonight for my puppy's obedience training. Every muscle in my body tightens up in this cold stuff. I shouldn't complain because it was just last week that the temp was -32 actual temp.. With the wind chill it was -51. Just think, you'd be 131 degrees warmer! LOL
