Pcos and fibromyalgia

  • Hi im new here and hoped to find what im looking for here. I have PCOS and fibromyalgia also they belive i have chronic fatigue as well. Im 28 and was told this last year when i was 26. I currently take metformin and lyrica also now a muscle relaxer and vicaprophen for pain. I also have some vitamin issues and have to take extra B6 B12 D and C. im tired of all the pills and would love to lose some weight in hopes that i can stop taking so many pain pills. I dont eat very much as im not that hungry usually and i work 30 plus hours a week plus have 2 kids. Im worried that if i go up another dose in my pills which is the max and it doesnt work or stops working i dont have any other options. Anyone have any advice on what i can do. Im tired of being moody all the time and sore. Weather im active or sitting around i still hurt

  • Hi there. My mom has Fibromyalgia and she takes Vitamin D, which helps with moods and energy. She also swims in a heated pool a few times a week, which is the only exercise that doesnt hurt her joints. For some people, the pain meds work and for some they dont. For my mom, and for you it seems, you are the unfortunate ones who will simply have to live with it. However, losing weight WILL help take the pressure off your joints and probably relieve some of the pain.

I do want to warn you about all the pills you are taking for pain/muscle relaxation. Look them up on the internet and make sure you are familiar with the side effects. My mom was on WAY too many pills and had a horrible seizure last February because of them. Now, she just tries to eat right, take natural vitamins and exercise. She only takes muscle relaxants when she can't sleep or when she travels. Also, she takes the lowest possible dose of pain meds.

I understand your frustration and I really hope that you can find something that works for you. My mom really tries to have a positive attitude and is trying to accept that her pain will never just "magically" go away. If you want to talk any more, PM me and we can chat.
  • There's both PCOS and fibromyalgia threads under the Dieting with Obstacles forum.

I have fibro, osteoarthrits, possibly mild rheumatoid arthritis, nonspecific autoimmune disease, insulin resistance/diabetes, and other health issues. Most are weight-related, or weight aggravated. It makes exercise a challenge, but I whole-heartedly recommend warm-water exercise if you can find a program. I'd live in the water if I could find a way to sleep without drowning.
  • Hi Chatterbox - I think you are younger than me - I'm in my 50s but I have found that getting my hormones right has helped immensely. I saw an endocrinologist who is always fine tuning my thyroid meds. I take T4 and T3.
but even more benificial to me has been hormone replacement therapy, estrogen specifically. Just a few weeks ago my ob/gyn had me go off of the estrogen for 6 days. By the 4th day I was extremely sore. When I started taking the estrogen again I started feeling better on the third and fourth days. I called my doctor and said I can't do that again. This doctor is trying to get me on the minimum amount of estrogen which I just don't feel as well on but I digress. I found Lyrica made me more tired and hungry than I normally am and only helped slightly if at all. I would recommend seeing an endocrinologist and have all your hormone levels checked.
  • thank you all for your replys
yes i try to watch how often i take the pain meds. I only take the muscle relaxer when i cant sleep from the pain or when i have to work. Same for the pain meds. I have had them long enough to know they dont make me drousy and so i can take them and do my job i work long hours because i refuse to give up and love to work. I told my doctor however i have to take 2 of the pain pills at work 1 when i start and 1 6 hours later *when aloud to every 6 hours* due to the fact that the days i work im in horrible pain. I am on more stuff then i like to be and hate it. I have changed this week some of my eating habbits. Ive dropped soda and candy completely and find i enjoy fruit more then candy anyways. With 2 kids and work i dont have time to go out of town for swiming im in a small town now and there isnt much in way of indoor activities. Working out on my own is fine but i cant do as much as i want. I walk alot and always hurt more the next day. Ive had my new job for 4 months and im still in bad shape after a shift. I thought about another doctor but as the closest one is 1 1/2 hours from me finding time is hard. They have done alot of blood work and a 24 hour urine showed low cordisol but the blood test said it was within range. my vitamin D 3 months ago was 17 and is now 30 so they have me on a daily pill but trying to get all the pills in when i have to is no fun. It makes me feel sick to take some of them and one day got so bad i refused to take anything i was like im 28 and im tired of having so many pills a day around 12 now. and it was not a good idea as i was in alot of pain. I tryed disability because we cant afford me not working either and was told i was denied... they felt although i could no longer do any job i have had before i could do some light work. *no light work pays enough to get daycare* and no one around here will hire for light work. sigh. so i just tough it out and hope things get better. Im down 10lbs from my starting weight. guess i need to keep more support and maybe setting up a ticker and a time to check in on here would help me out. thanks again and sorry this is sooo long.
  • With fibro (and other chronic pain) don't be afraid to take your pain medications when you're hurting. As our pain specialists and other doctors have have told hubby and I, it's far easier to prevent pain than to treat it.
(Hubby has a degenerative joint condition that's been constantly painful since he was 17, and I have fibro and arthritis. I can, at least in theory, go into remission, hubby's will only get worse).

We're taught to use pain medication only when the pain is very bad, but for chronic pain, that doesn't work very well, because by the time the pain takes hold, it can take a lot of medication to reduce the pain to bearable levels. For chronic pain, you generally can take far less pain medication, by taking it before the pain takes hold and has you in a vice grip.

Ironically, the people who take the medications only when the pain gets really bad, can end up having to take a lot more medication that those who take a medication on a regular schedule.

That's true for me. Tramadol is my main pain medication, and if I wait until I have severe pain to take it, I end up taking the maximum dose (8 pills, 400mg) and still feeling a lot of pain. If I take meds on a schedule I can often take as few as 4 or 5 pills throughout the day, and sometimes never feel severe pain at all. In the winter, I have a lot more pain, even the maximum dose isn't enough, and I start having to add in more and stronger pain medications, but it's still true that if I can take my pain meds on a schedule, I need a lot less meds and experience far less pain than if I wait until the pain is "bad enough" to warrant pain medication (by my pre-fibro standards).

If you're waiting until you're desperate for pain relief, you've waited too long.
  • I am gonna post this link again. Don't take it lightly cause this stuff is tremendously amazing. Most people are magnesium-deficient and don't realize that a huge host of their problems could be corrected with something so easy and inexpensive. I have been using this for the past 10 years and would never consider being without it.

Do you find this supplement to be better than the pill form of magnesium supplements at the drug store?
  • Quote: Do you find this supplement to be better than the pill form of magnesium supplements at the drug store?
Yes, because when it becomes dissolved into liquid and drank warm, it gets into your blood stream immediately. The faster it his the blood stream, the faster you feel the results. Therefore, great to have right before you go to bed.

I typically purchase through vitacost.com, as it is so much cheaper to get in the 16 oz size and lasts a really long time. But I am sure you can find it in your local health food store for about 3-4 times the cost.

Recently I have gone to the magnesium-calcium Natural Calm since I require calcium also.

The sweet lemon is my preference, although that is not available to me when I want the calcium also.

    All the best!
