Here's a funny thought...

Has this ever happened to you? I've been getting a real chuckle lately thinking about this... I work in a hospital, do alot of walking from one side to the other and often this is at a fast/rapid pace as I'm usually in a hurry... whenever this happens I always find myself feeling like I should be running instead, like running just feels more natural now that I'm running at home... and occasionally I will sort of trot along if there's no one around in that corrider or if it's outside. I try not to do that too much, people usually panic if they see me and think there is some sort of emergency if I do that, white coat whipping in the breeze kind of thing I guess!! I've also had this happen when exiting stores in a hurry etc, I just want to break out in a run, LOL... :0)

Karen - you are so funny...yes I am finding the urge to run, as it is much more efficient over walking. Yesterday I had to run on the treadmill once again because of bad weather, it was my 4 mile day and just past the 1 mile mark my mind started to wonder to other things in life..kids, homework schedules, doctor appointments etc...for nearly 2 miles I completely forgot about the running and I felt elated...I got a tingling feeling from my toes to the top of my head...My body was actually working as a "machine" gliding along and I was not mentally tortured thinking about my knees, breathing, how much LONGER etc.

PS - I have had many visits to our local Children's Hospital, my daughter has an inherited heart rhythm disorder and had an ICD implanted nearly 3 years ago and so many of the medical professions ran throughout the hospital...Now I know what their hidden agendas were! :dizzy:

Hah! I knew I couldn't be the only one, LOL... And yes, I too love when your mind drifts away while running and you forget where you are, what you're doing etc and get through a long portion of your run totally distracted... I do that all the time, I will purposely start thinking about things that have happened throughout the day, pt's I've seen, conversations I've had, things I need to do (although that last one sometimes brings me back to reality b/c I feel like I need to get a pen and paper and start making a list)... this is wonderful as it really occupies the mind and you forget all about the aches, pains and time. What a great feeling! 4 miles is incredible, you're doing so great!

Isn't that called being in the 'Zone' - the runner's high? I am so envious. You gals are doing great and I love hearing about your accomplishments. I'm going to a Fleet Feet store this week and get fitted for a pair of shoes - so I can walk more (wonder if there is a 'walker's high'?)

Fly on, my fleet-footed friends! jeanette

oh jeanette, i know what you mean about being envious!! i love hearing about all these running successes but i wish i could claim the same victories. unfortunately for some reason, my calves and feet go numb when i run much more than a half mile or so, so i've never been able to enjoy running :(

Yes, I think you are correct! The Zone...and I am very happy to be there! Thanks for the encouragement. Buying my shoes from Fleet Feet was the best investment I made...I just wished I didn't wait 5 months of running to do it! I am sure there is a "walkers high"! Good luck

I too never ever thought I would become a dedicated runner EVER! I just hated it everytime I would do it...the difference was that I did not know how to become a runner and would start out doing exactly the wrong things...the C25K really is a great program and this is how I began the correct way...I I have only 11 days before my first 5K, I am getting excited!

Hello everyone... I can oficially say I am a member of this club now. I did my first session last night and it felt great!!!

I actually got up to 2.5 miles last year with this program then my knee acted up and I had to stop. After Physical Therapy I hope I have it under control now... we shall see.

I had forgotten how great I feel running and floating afterwards. Feels great!

Congratulations Daizy! Hopefully the PT has given you the strength and knowledge you need to prevent injury again... So glad to hear you've joined us :0)

Leah and Reuselady, even if you're not running, it's still fun to have you guys chat on this thread as well :0) I do think there is such a thing as a walker's high as well... I know I've drifted away in the past while walking and feel great at the end of my walk so I think that qualifies ;-)

Thanks Karen!

I second that! Welcome and congrats!

sometimes i think about trying again... i was really psyched about running a couple years ago--bought fancy shoes from the running store, got up at the buttcrack of dawn every day... but my feet going numb was just too painful/scary so i gave up. i went to see a sports medicine doctor and he basically just said "ummm, i'm not sure what that's all about but i recommend not running anymore." $300 for that! ugh. :(

i definitely get a workout high from my cardio classes, though, so i'll have to live vicariously through you guys and get by on my cardio high ;)

Leahruthie, all that matters is that you are moving and doing some cardio, whether its biking, running, step class, aerobics, etc. Imagine spending that much money for a really stupid response, I would have been so furious! I always expect the highest professional responses from the medical professionals. Feet going numb ??? pinched nerve? shoes too tight or ill fitted? How was your attempt at running, dived right in, or approached it slowly like with the C25K? All could have derailed your running attempt.

lookinfine09 09-16-2009 08:43 AM

Leahruthie - I did the Beginners Luck class they have here in Lincoln. Before that class, I couldn't run 2 blocks without my legs being numb and my lungs screaming for air. If you're interested, PM me and I'd be happy to share the schedules.

i got into it pretty slowly--it was all on a treadmill to begin with, alternating walking with short bursts of running and then gradually lengthening the running periods. i didn't follow C25K exactly but it was very similar. i had my running shoes professionally fitted at the local running store. what happens is that my calves start to get really tight and then gradually a numbness starts spreading down my lower calves and into my feet, and pretty soon i can no longer feel my feet and it's really scary. it happens when i'm doing other things, too, like when i hiked up a mountain this summer i "lost my feet" a couple of times (that's what i call it when they go numb, hehe). i just dont' know what to make of it! i have the right shoes (i think), i tie them fairly loosely to give my feet room to expand.... ugh.

Interesting... does it happen when your on your feet for extended times like at the grocery store and how low has this been happening? Does it get better pretty quickly if you sit down to rest? Does it get better if you lean over a cart? Do you ever have pain as well?
