I am not the one to ask about bending the rules because I bend the rules as long as I keep losing! Like LizR mentioned, there are a few variations on the 5 & 1 depending on your activity level. I would probably work with a health coach or call MF nutritional support before ordering though, to get their recommendation - it would be a shame to spend all that money on the food and have it be ineffective.
Personally, I am 100% of a stickler when it comes to the carb count to make sure I'm under the minimum, but I play with my calories within reason. I cannot advocate that for anyone else though - what works for me may be really detrimental for another MF-er.

I've been on MF since the beginning of December. I go into a local Medifast center so my plan includes 12 weeks of monitored transition plus a year of monitored maintenance. I don't plan on eating Medifast foods during maintenance, I'd like to switch completely to "normal" food and get all my nutrition from there.
I see myself eating low fat and low calorie foods - similar to the Lean and Greens I eat now, but with more freedom of choice. Instead of just salmon and spinach, I might have salmon and spinach on a small bed of whole grain pasta. I can't wait to eat fruit again also!
I do plan on eating "naughty" foods - but only very infrequently and in much much smaller quantities. Instead of splitting a plate of cheese fries with my husband (I didn't even blink at that before MF), I might treat myself to a few bites of them. That's how I picture it in my head, I'm sure reality will be much harder, but I've been so committed and dedicated to losing this weight, I can't see myself letting go of that very easily.

Hm... for a special treat, my absolute favorite is the green Caramel Nut Maintenance Bar. It has more calories/carbs than the normal MF packets, so I try not to have one everyday. I nuke it in the microwave for 15 seconds and then everything is happiness for a few moments.
For normal everyday eating, my favorite 3 are the S'mores crunch bar, Honey Mustard Pretzels, and Chocolate Shake.
