I just got back from the hospital from seeing Jiff, she is doing pretty well and is comfortable.

I wheeled mom out of her room because the therapist came in and there was a note taped to Jiff's door for any visitors to stop at the nurses station....ok...I can do this right?

So....I get to the nurses station and I am informed that we are NOT to bring Jiff any food!!!!! HELLO!!!! Boy was I angry...I informed the nurses that neither my mom or I have EVER brought Jiff any food and that we understand the seriousness of her condition. I told them that my poor mother gets a sandwich at the coffee shop brings it in to Jiff's room and sits there and eats half of it and sticks the other half in her purse. The nurse says..."gosh..I would be tempted to eat it if I were Jiff!" I look at her like she has a medusa head and say, "my sister is not tempted." Give me a friggin break...that measly half of sandwich is all my mother has eaten for lunch for the past 3 weeks at Jiff's bedside EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN DAY!!!! Like Jiff is really gonna begrudge my mother that sandwich.

Sooooo at this point the nurses say...it is not coming from us, it is coming from Jiff's doctor. HELLOOOOOOOO. So I get home and leave a message for this doctor saying that up until now she has taken very good care of Jiff and I assured her that Jiff is not receiving any food from us and that perhaps she should go study her books to find out JUST WHY JIFF IS GAINING WEIGHT ON AN 8OO CALORIE DIET!!!!! i WAS NOT NICE. I am so angry I could just cry. plus I locked my keys in my van!

I am sorry chicks...I am just so pissed off!!

peachie, you have every right to be livid at that doctor. I'm glad you told her she needs to figure out why Jiff is gaining on 800 calories a day.

Are they sure she is getting only 800 calories a day, hospital food service could be messing up and sending her the wrong meals, have they checked this???

Oh peachie, I really wish I could be on that plane, so I could give you a hug. I guess we will have to settle for cyber hugs (((((((peachie)))))))

I hope the doctor will at least call you back. Try to keep your cool, but explain to her, that your family is not bringing Jiff food and you really find her accusations (sp) very uncalled for. Tell her the most important thing is to get to the bottom of this. You all have the same goal and that is helping Jiff.

Pardon my French, but what an a$$hole of a doctor!!! I can't believe he had the nerve to write a stupid note on the door to let the nurses do his dirty work!! You had every right peach to give him your two cents. The nerve of some people--sometimes you wonder who they are letting graduate from medical school sometimes!!!!

Here's a big cyber hig from me (((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))). If you need more, I have big shoulders to cry on and I have a rug that you could beat out for me you want to blow off some steam. better a rug than the doctor's face!

could it not be the fact that jiff is so adapt at storing her food that 800 cal on a starvation mode The only way to get er out of that mode is to feed her!!!! increase her metabolism!!!

I am so sorry that i am in nursing when i hear this. I am sorry that you and jiff and your mom have to go through this. there must be a nutritional specialist somewhere in this world that can really understand jiff and what she is going through. my deepest apologies to you for my profession of people with their heads stuck in their ........... books .

Peach, my heart is breaking for you and Jif and your mom right now!! How can that doctor live with himself(herself) did you not just tell the loser the other day you weren't bringing her food. Does he not realize that you are intelligent people that love Jif and would only do what is needed to get her to the point where she can have this life saving surgery!!!!!!Maybe this doctor can solve the mystery of why ANY of us GAIN weight afte a day or two days of being so stinking good and hardly eating anything!!!!! GRRRRRRRR!!!!! Don't cool off too much cuz this jerk needs to be set straight!!!!!!!! Please take care of yourself, I am worried about you too with all of this stress going on. Isn't there a nutritionist at the hospital who can study Jiff's case and work out a plan that will work for her rather than the idiot doctor picking a number of calories out of the sky ('cause you know that's exactly what was done)? I agree with Sue that Jiff's body is going into starvation mode & holding on to everything it's getting.

Peach... I worked as a chaplain in a hospital for a short while, and here is what I would do.

Each hospital has some sort of quality control office. Find out what it's called, and who's in charge and calmly bring your case before them. If they put you on hold - bring up the "fire" a bit.

I don't know what hospital you're dealing with, but it's also possible to find an advocate in the chaplains office (regardless of your faith/non-faith etc.). Much depends on the folks working there, but I've been known to step in front of a doc or two in my time. All too often they forget the human aspect of all of this.

Well Ms. Peachie, I've had to break my lurkdom in the wake of your pissed offedness. How dare some idiot assume something like that. I would bet all the weight I have to lose that you know more about nutrition, food and all that goes with it, than the dorky doctor does. I bet Jiff does too.
I think the advocate idea is a great one. I also think the nutritionist is a good idea, especially if it's someone who has a clue! How dare the doctor accuse you of subversive food pushing. Sheesh!

I know that I am not the only one worried about Jif~~I can work out a few days so that I can be there! BUT that stupid doctor better be ready! HOW DARE HE/HER ?????

Peach~~my prayers are still with Jiff, but i AM more than willing to do a bit more. No, you don't have to put me up in the stencil room, I'll do the Comfort inn !!

status...i would have done it long ago! How are you? Did you coach softball?
Did you have a pool party for your birthday? You feeling ok? AND.....I see you are still willing to
talk baseball. Thanks for replying, it means alot!

On the nutritionist: Jiff met with her on one of her first days in the hospital.
She looked at Jiff with all seriousness and said something to the effect that I
guess I do not have to talk to you about food and nutrition and diets. Jiff agreed since she has been there and done that about a gazzillion times. The nutritionist was very kind to her.

On the patient advocate: I called the hospital to see if they had one and they do not have one specifically assigned. There was talk of the sociial worker there but their primary responsibility is after care. Casey (I live in Morris County by the way!) I did not think of reaching out to the hospital Chaplain...what a good idea! In the meantime I will be Jiff's advocate and have set up a meeting with the head nurse for Monday.(not soon enough!)I have had some practice advocating for my kids so at least that is a start. .

On nurses Susan, I love nurses...my mom and aunt were nurses my step daughter and her dh are nurses and one of my best friends is a navy nurse....they (and you too!) do seem to have a certain sense of humor that stirikes my funny bone Most all of the nurses who have taken care of Jiff have been great but these two were patronizing and belittlling and left no room for dignity. Ain't that a nice way of saying they really ticked me off!!!!

I also have a call into the head of the hospital. He was very helpful a few years ago when my dad was in surgery and some other family was trying to claim my dad as theirs...very weird and a long story but the skinny of it was that he and the staff were extremely good about protecting my dad's and families privacy

Thanks to you all and your kindness and a couple of phone calls to my not Jiff sister, I am calmer and have in fact returned to the hospital pariking lot to reclaim my van...I have NEVER in all my life locked my keys in the car!!!

ps...almost for got this....I did ask the nurses to recheck with the dieticians. Jiff usually gets a low fat yogurt for breakfast., Turkey sandwich on low cal bread for lunch and some type of really yucky modified meat and modified starch and a veggie for dinner, salad with low cal dressing and crystal light iced tea and diet jello. pretty sparse, but she doesn't have to shop for it or prepare it or clean up after herself tho that is pretty cool with her!

Tonight I told DH that there was a plase that I really would enjoy going for a brief get a way. He was agreeable! Want to guess where? Let me know if it could be worked out! Comfort Inn is perfect for me!!
