Thumbs down Low carb diet 'work' for menopausal women?

Hello! I'm almost afraid to ask....but like a zillion other women,I have found that while in menopause losing weight is impossible. I've thought of following the low-carb lifestyle.....s.somers/atkins/protein ......but hesitate to try anything drasticly new,for fear of slowing my metabolism even more....right now it's at a slow crawl........so I'm just eating less...of everything except salads, which I'm eating more of.....I'm going on vacation in a few wks. but when I get back....I want to be involved in 'a plan' that will work!.......hope all you ladies 'out there' who have been in this same boat as I will respond with your opinions....and successes. Thank you so much.

Hi Tutu! Neat name.

I am long past menopause (well, not that long) but do know that it is harder to lose weight at that time no matter what diet you are following! Life is unfair to us chicks.

Eating less and less is going to put you into starvation mode and it will be very difficult to lose. Not a good plan. How about eating more but healthy choices and doing some research on different plans. There are lots of links on the Home Page and lots of books in librairies.

I'm sure some of the "younger" chicks can give you lots of advice when you do start a plan.

Have a great vacation and see you later.

Talking Don't mess with my TUTU ~~

Hi Tutu and welcome! Luv your name!

I'm somewhere in those peri~pre~or menopausal years. It's a tough life for us chicks...yes, Ruth, very unfair! I followed the CAD program 7 yrs ago now and had wonderful success that I maintained with little effort until I hit my early 40's. My weight loss now, following the LC woe is slow, but at least I am not gaining.

The added benefits of LC eating, for me, has been lessened hot flashes, "menstrual" type of discomforts., etc..

I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable chicks will come around shortly to explain the more "technical" advantages of LC and menopause.

Best of luck and hope you'll post often!

J

I think it only stands to reason that those who are entering or ending or whatever about menopause that a low carb WOE is a great way to manage your weight and healthy eating. After all, it has been proven that PCOS is better handled with a low carb plan and one thing for sure the chances of getting pregnant greatly increase on a low carb WOE. I think the metabolism reacts better to low carb plans. Just my two cents here, but perhaps you should read up on the benefits of low carbing and find a plan that's right for you. I wouldn't think that weight loss is possible during menopause but what a wonderful gift you can give yourself during this time--healthier eating choices to last the rest of your life!
