  • OK - I just received an order some low-carb snacks and wanted to report the findings of my taste test. I am going to let my daughter try them tonight and will add her comments:

Low Carb Success Granola - Cinnamon Nutrageous. Not bad is sweet and would be wonderfu to use on some plain yogurt or just as a snack. It comes in fairly big chunks and isn't just small pieces, though you can probably break it up. 1/2 cup serving has 1 effective carb per serving. I was impressed - ingredients are Malitol, pecans, canola oil, almonds, wheat bran, flax seed meal, oats, soy protein isolate, flavorings, baking soda, salt sucralose. It sells for 5.99 for the 9 oz package and has 6 servings per package. I really think 1/4 cup of this would be a good serving size. Another use would be with cheesecake. (also comes on Sour Cherry flavor)

Just the Cheese - Crunchy snack - I got the Sour Cream & Onion. The package says: "We simply crumble natural cheese, bake and season. Nothing else added! That's why Just the Cheese Crunchy Baked Cheese is ideal for low carbohydrate diets. Each serving contains only one gram of carbohydrates yet has more than 10 grams of protein and more calcium than a pint of milk." There is one carb per serving. The package is 1 oz and has two servings or about 18 pieces. Each piece is about the size of a quarter and about 1/8" thick. I really like them. I'm going to try and experiment with making them myself at home. (also comes in Cheddar, Herb & garlic, Jalapeno, and Nacho Ranch)

Baja Bob's Soy Munchables - These look like Cheetos, don't quite taste like them. I have two flavors Cheddar Cheese and Jalepano. The Cheddar cheese tastes a bit like cardboard, but not so bad that they are not edible - with a sour cream dip, they would probably be great. The Jaleopano I like a bit better, maybe it is because the spicy taste overpowers the slight cardboard taste of the Cheddar Cheese flavor. (also comes in Herb & Garlic, Italian and Cool Ranch.) They come in a 5 oz bag with 2 grams of effective carbs per serving and 13 grams of protein.
  • Thanks for sharing that info with us. Unfortunately, none of those products are available in my part of Canada. That kind of stuff is slow to arrive on our store shelves, even health food stores. Just recently the Atkins Quick Quisine pancake mix and muffin mixes became available. I've made the pancakes and find they make a hearty, filling serving, especially with a side of bacon but I think the Atkins pancake syrup is very watery and should have some kind of thickening agent. I haven't tried the muffin mixes yet.
I can get Atkins Advantage and Endulge bars here. I really don't care for the Advantage bars but the Endulge Caramel Chew is pretty good. Too bad they knock me out of ketosis. I don't know how that can happen when they are supposed to have just 2 gr of carbs but they do.
I think you could probably make those cheese snacks at home much cheaper, fresher and tastier than buying them.
  • I love the just cheese, but they are very high in sodium and I will retain water if I eat them.

You might be able to order them online, but they could be expensive (they are expensive anyway about 3.00 a bag in US dollars).

I will use diabetic products, although some of them are not that low in carbs....yes these products will throw me out of ketosis as well.

If I have to have something sweet, I find these to be good alternatives.
  • I think there is a recipe for cheese crackers on the recipe forum. If I find them, I'll post the link here. They are probably in the miscellaneous section.

Linda- I like Carey sugar free syrup, if you can find it. I have had it at IHOP. I haven't seen it in the store. Smuckers was kinda thick, but I didn't care for the flavor.
  • Here it is, Debra. Thanks for posting your reviews, btw. I think I will try the granola now that I have heard something favorable about it!

  • I tried the Carb Solutions B-B-Q chips. NAS-TY. I hate to waste money, but I couldn't even finish the bag. This is the first low carb food (other than Atkins cafe latte shake) that I really didn't like. I finished the shakes because I didn't want to waste the money, but I couldn't force the chips down. Those cheese snacks sound good. I may have to try them.

  • Karla - you and me both - those were some NASTY chips!!! All the products I got and tried I got at www.lowcarbliving.com. I live in a smaller town that doesn't have much in the way of lo-carb. Our one heath food store has Atkins bread, the mixes, bars and that is about it. I can get some things at Wal*Mart. They and one of the grocery stores are carrying lo-carb bread now - not too bad, but we are staying away from it for a couple weeks for induction.

I had a friend in California send me some lo-carb tortilla shells - they are also in the freezer for another week.

Anyone try the Mint Endulge bars from Atkins???? They are awesome, so you definitely need self-control with those.

My 17 yo daughter tried all but the Just the Cheese (cause I ate them all She liked the jalopena better than the cheddar cheese and said they would be an "acquired" taste. She LOVED the granola - had it with plain yogurt w/splenda for a snack.
  • Only in LA...they have a store that is completely low carb here now, it is just 1/2 mile from my house --great. They have great products, but they are expensive and I have learned that I need to buy the little cheesecakes one at a time, I will eat them all in one day, that is not really good for the health plan!

They are also made with that maltinol, which really messes up my stomach, but there are some really good things that are now available. I had these tofu noodles that had 40 calories for a bag and 4 carbs, you can mix them into a soup, or I made checks, diced tomatos, onions garlic with parm cheese, and it was good, not pasta, but takes care of that craving.....
  • Rowan - I made a recipe with tofu called Macafoni & Cheese and the tofu was great - it tasted just like Macaroni & Cheese. It does seem like the lo-carb products are very pricy. I have a friend that must live by you, cause she is in the LA area and has a low carb store close by - she sent me some lo-carb tortilla shells. There is so much you can do with them.

Malitol also messes with my stomach - I get so bloated with gas and have terrible pains. Some people it goes right through - I'd rather have that than what I get - I learned the hard way that moderation is the key.
  • Rowan, was that shiratake noodles? I have been wanting to try them, but can't find them yet.

I don't have problems with maltitol, but Somersweet (Suzanne Somers stuff) was KILLER on my stomach! Oh wow, I had to get up out of bed at night because I didn't want to disturb Rob's sleep!

I tried Atkin's Morning Start breakfast cereal this morning. I bought it at GNC. I don't normally shop there because they are TOO DARN HIGH, but I hoped to find some Osolo Rolls - or they are called something like that. Supposedly they are good. Anyway, they didn't have the rolls, but they had the cereal. It was $6 for a box, so it will definitely not be a regular thing. It was pretty good. It was slightly bland, and it could have been crunchier. However, it was the closest thing to cereal I have had in a LONG time.
  • Jennifer- yes it is the shiratake noodles. They come packed in water so you can just open it up rinse and throw it in a pan. I like it because the entire bag has 40 cal and 4 carbs and if you cook it just right, it tastes okay. You definately need to put stuff on them.

The store has the Robbins Nest deserts (again kill my stomach) and an assortment of brownies, candy bars, protein drinks, supplements and prepacked dinners, like macaroni and cheese all made with lo-carb products. I bought pizza and had some, but my stomach got upset, not sure if it was from that or not. The lo-carb products are VERY heavy.

The do have dinner and hambuger/hot dog rolls (you can order the same ones online at synergy foods --just do a google search, they are in Pasadena,CA) those are very good. But I am afraid that if I begin to use more of these right now they may become trigger foods. I notice my calories have gone up since this store opened and my weight loss slowed. Also past first two weeks as well.

Debra- I live in the valley....sherman oaks area, there is a store called Humphery Yogart that carries the Atkins/Keto products, they just opened a store across the street. They will be online soon, if you all want, I can post the site when it goes up.
  • I don't think they have any stores like that in Canada yet. At least not in my area. The few low carb foods that we can buy are awfully expensive.
The other day I bought a package of Atkins Banana Nut Muffin mix for about $6. It makes just 12 medium muffins. I baked them last night and enjoyed one with butter and a slice of cheese. It was quite good. I have frozen the rest to be doled out carefully. It was nice to have a cake-like treat for a change.
  • I like this thread. It gets really expensive trying low carb food and then finding out it tastes bad. Some products are much better than others. I've tried a lot of things, cann't recall most of them now. Estee makes ketchup that is sugar free, for diabetics originally. It is good and close to Heinz 57. I get it for $3 a bottle, which is higher than regular ketchup, but not as high as Atkins. I tried Atkins teriyaki sauce tonight. I used it to marinade salmon and then broiled the salmon steaks. It really took out the fishy flavor that I hate about salmon, was kind of sweet tasting too. I would buy it again.
  • Jennifer, I have bought the Carey's light syrup but it has a lot of carbs per tbsp compared to Atkins which has 0 per 1/4 cup.
  • Darn! I never looked at the carb count...I just asked for SF and slurped it up. I'll learn!

    Rowan- is the shiratake refrigerated?
