Default Tell me about cholestrol and Atkins

My doc called me in today and she said my bad cholestrol is at 175. My overall cholestrol is 210 . I told her that since that blood test was taken I am 12 days into Atkins. She does not like atkins and gives me three months. She wants to see me the last of April and if my cholestrol has gone up she says I have to go off of it. So now what can I expect? Is it true that cholestrol actually goes down on Atkins. I hope so because I have lost 7 pounds so far and I want to continue. My tryglicerides are 54 which she said is ok? Can anyone help me here?

About 8 months ago I had my cholesterol done, and I had elevated "bad" cholesterol. After all the christmas munching, I started my low carb which is no where as strict as atkins. 2 weeks into my low carb diet, I had my cholesterol taken and everything is back to normal now.

I have been reading "protein power" which explains why your cholesterol will return to normal on a low carb diet. Just keep sticking to it and see what the tests say in a few months.

first the numbers that she should look at is the good cholesterol to triglyceride ratio it should be less than 1:3

first the numbers she gave you is way off the triglyceride levels usualy are higher than 54!! most people are above 150! and that is considered less than 130 is very good. the good cholesterol is considered anything over 35 is good and the bad hdl i do not remember what the norm for that is. but call her and get the rean numbers first write it down.

just hang tough at first it will take a bit of changes and adjusting but mine went from bad to utterly fantastic. I do not remember what mine was before but it was bad!!

the last one i had done was Ldl good was 69 Hdl bad was 89 and triglycerides was 98 so all in all my ratio was just under 2:1 for the triglycerides : LDL ratio

I am a big PP fan too

Well, we measure a different way in Canada. I have heard that the cholesterol may go up at first and then level off downward. Mine is up right now but I suspect that's because I went off estrogen. There's always something!

Thanks everyone. I feel much better. The doctor did tell me that my good cholestrol was 35 and that it weas good she just wanted the bad to come down. Glad to know my tryglicerides are good. I had no idea where that was suposed to be. I'll try to hang in there.
