Till, I saw the article, I get Dr. Atkins radio show here in New York. He says the word moronic thinking a lot. He also deals with supplements and complementry medicine. I am starting my induction today! I have a fish market right accross the street from where I live. load up on shrimp, ect.
Have you ever tryed Dr. Atkins shacks? I have and I like them.it is a good choc fix. Do you have them in your area? nipper
Hey Nipper,
I live in NYC also! In fact the Atkins center is three blocks from where I work. I have not tried any of his products. The most I have done is eat EAdvatage low carb protein bars which are kind of gross. I am doing well on induction, but once I go off I think I am going to reintroduce carbs very slowly. I have been ok without them (but it is a struggle for me to give up my wine LOL ).
Is this your first time? I lost 4.5 pounds the first week. Also, I have been checking myself with the Ketostix - I know when they turn pink that I am continuing to burn fat. I just had fish for lunch but tend to eat meat more (I don't mind that). It's the veggies that are bothering me the most. When I finish induction I will add more. I have noticed that the cravings are gone and I am less tired. In fact, sometimes it is hard for me to sleep through the night. I am more aware of my thoughts than before. Because I am going through a tough time, I don't know how good that is!! But I feel so much better, physically and mentally. Let me know how you are doing.
Hey Till, step in to my office! I can't believe you live in New York! It is really hard for me to start the Atkins diet. Giving up bread is the worse. Desserts are easy for me. once I get into purple then I can put BBQ sauce on my ribs!
What kind of work do you do?
One year I took a picture of 34th street from of Hearld Square just so that my family back home could get an idea of what shopping at xmas is like here in NY.
The post offices, are they like the worse! Such torture!
One woman was mailing a package to Bosnia, with out an address! Then she told the clerk that she knew her rights and that her lawyer would call his lawyer! The clerk behind the counter said, my lawyer and your lawyer will do lunch, it is still not regulation, it's not going to Bosnia! I try to stay away from the post office as much as possible!
Last week I went with a friend to the DMV to pay a traffic ticket and here were all these people snapping on their cervical collars while they were in the elevator, going up to small claims court! only in New York! Nipper
Nipper! I know what you mean about NY, and about giving up bread. Don't worry, the cravings will fade after about three days. I myself was not that into sweets but it was bread, pasta, potatoes all the way. I haven't had a smidgen for almost two weeks and to tell you the truth, I miss it much less than I thought I would. What I like about this diet is that I can have anything, as longs as it is not carbs. Doing the points, etc. on WW I felt like I had to watch every single food group. Plus I love fatty stuff so this is easy for me.
You should buy some Ketostix at the drugstore (Duane Reade has them) to test if you are in ketosis. This can be very psychologically reassuring, b/c if you are you know you are burning fat. Also, only eat foods you like during induction, don't force yourself to eat stuff you are not that fond of. I tried to eat turkey which I thought would be healthier for me than ham (of course it is), but just ended up not wanting any. So...it's only two weeks, indulge yourself (just not in carbs!). Pork rinds are really good for the 'crunch' fix. And if you get desperate there are some low carb protein bars.
I have a lot more energy now, I have to admit, and my clothes are already starting to fit better. Normally I suffer from a little bit of SAD around this time, but no sign of it. There are other benefits than just losing weight! Hang in there, and keep me posted on how you are doing.
I just wanted to add my two cents-worth regarding the Atkin's diet. I went on this diet a few years ago -- I was fat, tired and ill all of the time. I couldn't take the WW diet plan any longer, and I was sick of counting calories and fat grams. Naturally, I was part of the yo-yo syndrome, and I kept losing ang gaining the weight right back again.
Then, a friend of mine told me about Atkin's, and how much she had lost on this diet, so I deicided to try it. I was absolutely amazed at how quickly I started dropping the pounds. I was never hungry, but I really did miss potatoes and bread........for about a week. I am now eighty-five pounds thinner, I feel like a million bucks, and I've kept the weight off.
I highly recommend this diet to anyone. I suggest buying the book before beginning the plan, to fully understand what this diet is all about, AND to talk to your physician first. You won't regret it for a minute!
Thanks for the info, Urban Woman! You did really great, I hope you are proud of your accomplishments. Nice to meet you, and looking forward to reading more posts from you!
I tried to get a post out to you several times yesterday, but it wouldn't let me. MSN is making more improvements, so I think this may have something to do with it.
Yes, I am proud of the weight I've lost, but it really wasn't that hard to do on the Atkin's diet. As long as you tell yourself you don't want or need refined sugar or white flour ever again (and mean it), then the rest is easy. I was amazed how quickly the pounds came off, but I really missed bread and potatoes at first -- for about a week.
I hope to make a lot of friends in here, although sometimes I feel like an outsider, because I've already reached my weight goal (and then some.) What many people don't realize is that even though I'm slender now, there are times I still want that piece of chocolate cake or apple pie -- and it takes every inch of willpower I have to leave it alone!! This is the kind of test that can leave a person weak at the knees and dizzy!! LOL
Thank-you for your encouraging and very nice words, and I hope to talk with you again soon, Jennifer. Bye for now.
I think it is so inspiring that you have lost 85 lbs! Don't feel like an outsider. In fact, I think you will be a wealth of information, especially for me who is just starting this. How is it being on maintenance? How many carbs do you allow yourself, and do you ever cheat? How do you manage it if you do? Answers please!!
Hi Dee, don't you feel like an outsider! Weight loss is part of the battle, maintaining it is the other. Also, you are a great source of inspiration for others, I love it that you are posting at goal weight.
Hi everybody,
Tilly, I just read the article and I thought it was pretty good news. I went to the Dr. yesterday and we reviewed my blood work that I had done. All of it is good, my cholesterol and trigylcerides were better than excellent. The Dr. just kept looking at them to find something wrong, I think, and she just kept saying everything was really, really good. My blood pressure has gone from 140/84 down to a perfect 120/70. My resting pulse is now 60 and it use to be 120. I've been following a low carb woe since 8-9-02 and I don't see any reason to change. Also, I've been exercising everyday. The Dr. did say she wants me to repeat the blood work in 6 months. I think she thinks all the eggs, butter and bacon I'm eating is going to give me a heart attack. Just wanted to share my experience and say, for me, it has totally changed my life and I not only feel wonderful, I have the lab work to prove it!
