there was a thread yesterday on spotlighthealth.com that was intriguing, so i'm borrowing it for here. one preop had asked her surgeon how she had gotten so heavy, expecting the usual answer about how it was all her fault. but he said something along these lines, according to the post:
normally, it takes about 20 minutes for the 'we're full' signals to get to the brain so that we should stop eating. but apparently years of yo-yo dieting and calorie restriction truly disrupt this mechanism, and it often takes 30-40 minutes for the signals to show up, leaving us more time for more calories. plus dessert.
an interesting idea. i wonder if making sure that we eat for only 20 minutes could help people lose weight.
one thing i DO know is that we are told to take 20-30 minutes to eat our meals, and if we're not done by then, we have to stop eating anyway. we were told that this is because eating longer sets us up for too many calories and a grazing pattern, besides stretching the pouch.
but maybe this feedback loop is an issue as well..
I am reading a book right now called the Weigh Down Diet which actually isn't a diet but it teaches you how to listen to your body signals, to slow down and it teaches you control. Its a new way of thinking for me cause I'm so used to shoveling it down as fast as I can..... but I am soooooo willing to learn it. I am so tired of dieting, counting this and that, not allowed to have this or that.... this book teaches you - you can have everything !!!! AND best of all it teaches you that God is here for us and when we want to over eat to call out to GOD for help instead !!!!
i've had friends who have done very well with the weigh down program, but some of them have gone waaaaay off the deep end with the religious aspect, with the result that one of them actually told her lutheran minister that he was in league with satan!!!
but she also lost the 45 pounds she needed to lose.
not sure which is the better choice????
anyway, so glad you're around, and please give little miss gracie a big hug and a smooch from me..
WOW 45 lbs !! thats wonderful, now calling her minister satan whoaaaaaaaaah I wonder why she did that ?
I know this way is not going to happen over night and I need to change my meal habbits one meal at a time.... I'm ready !!!
This morning I had a (now this sounds gross for breakfast lol) a croissant pocket, philly steak & cheese mmmmmmmmmmm. For lunch I have a 1/2 tuna sandwich with real HELMANS mayo and none of that diet icky tasting crap lololol and maybe a salad.
For dinner ????????? Im not even worried about it and thats the best part !!!!!
I am reading a book called "Thin Again" same type of principal as weigh down. I know that their has been some squabbling between the two programs...I just don't know at this point what it is. Anyhow....neat stuff and since I have done the hunger/full thing with Geneen Roth's Book I am going to try to do it with Weight Watchers/low carbish.
As to the 20 minute or even 30 or 40 minute rule, I could pack away a whole LOT of food in that time period. So, although it sounds reasonable for some, and I am sure it is for those who have had surgery, my eating is so disordered that it would only be another torch to my flame, bee in my bonnet, thorn in my side...you get my drift. Set the timer....it would take me under 10 to finish a pint of chocolate peanut butter!!! Trust me, I could work through the brain freeze!
BUT if you or I were gonna binge...well, then HEY! It would be nice to give ourselves a start and finish line!
This is interesting. Do you think that could be a small part of the Hellers CAD thought? After all, you start that 60 minute timer as soon as you put that first bite of salad in your mouth, portion out your plate with the complete meal done within the 60.
At least for myself, I enjoy my salad and probably take at least 15 minutes to finish it. (of course I love salad and it's probably more like 3 cup fulls! lol) Next I make my entree plate (3 -5 minutes?) and then eat the main goodies (prob 15-20 minutes), so, I've used up about 45 -50 minutes of my hour.
Now Peach, we're not talking about the nose dive into the Haagen Daz or chips and salsa! I can wipe those babies out in 10 minutes - NO PROBLEM
Has me thinking tho-I need to pay attention to this.
I think it might work for some people. I have tried CAD and CALP and they just didn't work for me. I don't know why because I was doing all the right things. I just don't think my system can take all those carbs, even if they're tucked neatly into a one hour time period.
I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers here, but I don't think my weight problem is something that God is especially interested in. There were days and nights when I prayed for help to control my appetite but it never came. Not until I saw Dr. Atkins on the Mike Douglas show back in the 70s. Talk about Epiphany! What he said made sense. The symptoms he described sounded just like me. The method he outlined was so simple and satisfying I couldn't believe I could eat that way and lose weight, but lose weight I did. At the same time I lost my cravings for carbs, the mood swings and emotional roller coaster ride ended, I felt like a "normal" person for the first time in my life. Perhaps God was answering my prayers through Dr. Atkins! I don't know. I only know that if I had stuck with his program for the past 30 years I wouldn't now be fighting the extra 120 lb I gained when I actually listened to the "Low Fat is Healthy" pundits. But now I have seen the light. ...again. I'm a born again Low Carber and I won't be swayed away from the light again.
God gives us the gift of abundant food, then leaves out the part where you know how to control yourself! That's what happened to me, at any rate. Dr. Atkins is wonderful, I would kiss him if he came within arm's reach! I never knew why I was gaining weight when all I was eating was corn-flakes and skim milk and salads and pasta.
I think the thing with the 20 minutes is, you have to slow down and really chew, chew, chew. Then, about 20 minutes later, you notice that you haven't really eaten that much, and you're full. Of course, that never worked for me because I knew the faster I ate, the more I could eat in one sitting. Hmmmm, something to think about. Thanks Jiff!!
Hmmmm..been thinking about this issue myself recently and I can honestly attest to the fact that all the main principles work--lowered eating times, eating slower etc. But what I found worked for me was portion control. I realized that I had a natural rhythm to my eating and that the only way I as going to lose weight was to "guide" my body. If you remember the post I put it on--I think it was Good's post about not eating enough, I sometimes trick my body into thinking it's getting carbs but in reality it isn't using Splenda. That got me thinking about how I can limit my portion size and still feel full at the end. I noticed that when I "tricked" my body, I felt more sated at the end of the meal than I di if I just dove right inot my food. After rereading Heller's book, I discovered that they encourage a SMALL amount of carbs at the beginning of a meal to do the same thing--stimulate appetite. For example, I do recall rachel Heller saying on Oprah that she would use regular dressing instead of lite on a salad as we need the carbs to act as a trigger for eating--not a huge trigger to let us go off the deep end and binge which unfortunatley got me in this mess in the first place. I think this planis working for me based on this principle as I have lost yet another 3 pounds--grand total is 20 since New Years!
I've been giving this subject some thought. I know that I shovel food in and I also understand why. But, it's hard to change. When I was a child, my mother made mealtime a place from ****. She had a captive audience to scream at, so we ate as fast as possible. Well, that's the past, but how do we change bad habits.
My cousin once told me that her doctor gave this advice: He said that she should fill her plate with what she wanted to eat ...not using a platter, of course. She, then, had to set a timer for twenty minutes and had to eat so slowly that her plate could not be empty until the timer went off. She did lose weight.
Using the LC principle, I would think this idea could work also!
Also, the doctor told my cousin NOT to use diet stuff like salad dressings as they don't satisfy our taste buds. Diet soda isn't included, but he didn't recommend drinking a lot of soda either.
my surgeon tells his patients to ignore the low-fat/fat free messages from the wacko dietician simply because we can't eat much of anything anyway, yet we need to stay satisfied.
an example: at dinner the other night, there was the really good crusty bread. so, i took the small end piece [my favorite], tore out all the fluffy white stuff, which left me with the crispy crust. and i slathered on ALL the butter i wanted!! how much did i use??? a half a pat do you BELIEVE IT!!!!!??????
maybe your cousin's doc is on to something!!
oh. and one more point. some folks believe that the bubbles in soda expand the stomach. not sure about that. in a normal stomach i can't imagine that one or two cans a day would hurt.. but two liters sounds disastrous!!
Tippy its so true, eat real food and you feel satisfied, fake foods are only full of unhealthy chemicals, etc......(you know what I man). A little bit of real good tasty food is better than a whole truck load of diet stuff !!!!! SO THERE
Well one of the changes I am doing other than trying to eat slow. I have changed the size of the plate I am using. I use a small plate, a little bigger than a cake plate but not my HUGE regular dinner plates. If it doesn't fit on my little plate I'm not eating it !!! period !!
If I want salt I have a FEW chips and save the rest for later. If I want chocolate, eat 1/2 a candy bar not the whole thing in 2 bites. Eat what you desire, JUST CONTROL and listen to your body's signals. Something so simple yet SO HARD !!
Another thing, sip water inbetween bites and take small bites and chew them well so you are enjoying the flavors.
That's what I do too! I eat on a small plate to make sure I don't overdo it! The only thing I allow seconds for is salad since I need the folic acid. And usually it works pretty well for me!
I think I need one of those guys like at the airport with the bright orange flags to signal me when I'm full because when I'm eating, I'm in such heaven I see, hear, know NUTHIN !!! Kinda like a horse with blinders on
