Question Heavy Cream on Adkins???

Hello to all fellow low carb buddies. I am just starting the Adkins and in day 2 of it, I am already noticing a decrease in appetite. I have seen many recipes for Adkins and they say heavy cream can be used. Can anyone please explain to me what brand etc is ok of heavy cream for adkins. The older women in the store told me Eagle brand milk was heavy cream. Please help me.

Hello FF,
I don't do Atkins, but I do know that the heavy cream is the stuff you find in the dairy department in little milk carton containers. You know, the kind you whip to make real, yummy whipped cream. Always check the nutrition info and it will tell you how many carbs are in it. I have no idea how many carbs are in Eagle brand, but isn't it the sweetened condensed stuff? Yuck! Real cream rules!

Hope that was helpful,
Chickadee

Hi Feeling,

Chickadee is right. Eagle brand is very high in carbs, and is sickenly sweet. Great when I was still addicted to sugar.

Heavy cream, aka, whipping cream, is the fat from the just-milked milk. And since it is fat, it does not have any carbs. And you can whip it up and add sugar substitute and eat it on whatever. No carbs = good food. Carbs = bad food.

Always look at any packaged product for the nutrition information and see how many carbs are listed. Be careful to watch for "per serving" and see how many servings per container, or what the serving size is considered. Sometimes a carb content will seem small until you notice the serving size is one tenth ounce of a 25 oz. package of potato chips or something.

Atkins is the most strict of the low carb diets as far as how many carbs are allowed during induction. Just be careful not to do induction farther than the two weeks. Then add more carbs back in. It is tempting not to, but it is not healthy to eat almost no carbs for a long period of time.

Good luck with you low carb adventure, and I hope you find it a success.

I fiond that the heavy cream is great but too fat for me. i enjoy half and half it is 1/4 of the price too. I only use it in my coffee though. it does ahve a few more carbs but very little so it does not make much difference to me. but if you are using it for cooking then you just need to make the decision which you want to use. but NOT the egal brand condensed milk. DH has usec the evaporated milk but that is not bad in coffee but i would ot use it regularly i do not know the carb count for that i did not check.

When I want to use a milk product but don't want it to be so rich (read: fat) I use part cream and part water. For instance, I made some sugar-free custard today which called for 2 cups of milk. I used 1 cup of cream and one cup of water. Worked well, and still no carbs. If you are going to use just a tiny bit of milk (or half and half) you might not have to worry about the carbs. But for larger amounts, any milk product is not good for us if it stirs up the desire for more sugar (milk has lactose, a sugar).

Good to see YOU back, Ms Chickadee! I missed you for so long. I only pop in every once in a while, to ease my 3FC withdrawl symptoms. What a great bunch of chicks here.

Later, Giggles (aka, Shirley in another life).
